Clinical Research in Vulnerable Populations: Variability and Focus of Institutional Review Boards' Responses.

BACKGROUND: Children and patients with cognitive deficits may find it difficult to understand the implication of research. In the European U … s recommended an amendment of the protocol. CONCLUSION: Both clinical research protocols involving vulnerable populations were well accepted. IRB workflows and decision times varied substantially. Some IRBs accepted a previous IRB decision without the necessity of another reevaluation process. Requested changes were focused on the informed consent documents. A more sta …

Determinants Shaping Healthcare Experiences Among Vulnerable Populations in Hong Kong: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BackgroundIn many urban Asian cities, healthcare experiences are situated at the intersection of infrastructure-dictated living, multilingual and aging populations, and pluralistic medical practices. In Hong Kong, these dynamics are intensified by socioeconomic inequality and long wait times for subsidized care within the public-private healthcare system. Few qualitative studies have examined how social, environmental, and healthcare system factors shape the experiences of vulnerable populations in this context against a multilevel framework. The study explored these determinants and their imp…

PEEC: The Protected Entities Ethics Checklist for Collecting Speech Data From Vulnerable Clinical Populations.

PURPOSE: The rapid advancement of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and natural language processing technologies has created significant opportunities for clinical applications within speech and language disorders, yet these capabilities remain largely confined to high-resource languages and populations. As research communities work to address these inequities through inclusive speech data collection, the intersection of clinical vulnerability, linguistic diversity, and emerging speech and language technologies creates ethical considerations that are rarely addressed by existing guidelines. Oropouche Virus (OROV) Vaccine Development for Vulnerable Populations: Epidemiological Context, Challenges and Future Directions.

Oropouche virus (OROV) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus in the Americas that has evolved from a pathogen historically restricted to forest environments into an increasingly important regional and international public health concern. Despite decades of documented circulation, the true burden of OROV infection remains substantially underestimated, largely because of frequent misdiagnosis and the high proportion of asymptomatic or subclinical infections. This review synthesizes current evidence on the historical emergence, epidemiology, transmission dynamics, and clinical features of OROV, wi

Decoding chemicals of emerging concern in personal hygiene products: Exposure implications for vulnerable populations.

Personal hygiene products often contain various chemical additives to ensure their functionality and quality, but concerns persist regarding the potential harmful effects of their usage. In this work, a pilot study was conducted to characterize the chemical components in disposable sanitary pads and paper diapers by screening for a total of 92 chemicals, including synthetic antioxidants (AOs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), and phthalate esters (PAEs). Significantly higher concentrations of AOs (median for sanitary pads: 3.25 × 105 ng/g, median for diapers: 2.25 × 105 ng/g) were observed compa

Measles in vulnerable populations: An outbreak in Roma settlements of Loire-Atlantique, France, 2019.

In May 2019, a measles outbreak occurred in the French subregion of Loire-Atlantique, particularly affecting Roma settlements. Various obstacles hindered the implementation of postexposure measures among Roma population, resulting in the spread of the cases to other settlements. Suspected cases of measles were immediately investigated and concerned settlements were visited for measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination. From July 1 to September 3, 2019, a first and then a second Health Reserve team helped for vaccination on the affected and then also the measles-free settlements. Vaccination upta

Community Care in Reach: Mobilizing Harm Reduction and Addiction Treatment Services for Vulnerable Populations.

Opioid overdoses killed 47,600 people in the United States in 2017. Despite increasing availability of office-based addiction treatment programs, the prevalence of opioid overdose is historically high and disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness. Despite availability of effective treatment, many at greatest risk of death from overdose experience myriad barriers to care. Launched in 2018, the Community Care in Reach mobile health initiative uses a data-driven approach to bring harm reduction and medication for opioid use disorder directly to …

When nature pushes back: environmental impact and the spatial redistribution of socially vulnerable populations.

Objectives. This research investigates the spatial redistribution of socially vulnerable subpopulations during long-term recovery from natural disaster. We hypothesize that the local environmental impact of a disaster influences this redistribution process and that how it does so varies by the urban or rural context in which the disaster occurs.Methods. To test these hypotheses, we use a novel research design that combines the natural experiment offered by Hurricane Andrew with GIS technology and local census data.Results. Findings indicate that in a more urbanized disaster zone (Miami), long-

Diversified food fortification portfolios can enhance coverage of micronutrient-vulnerable populations in West Africa.

Food fortification is central to addressing micronutrient deficiencies in West Africa and elsewhere. Yet evidence remains limited on whether current staple food fortification vehicles equitably reach vulnerable populations and whether candidate vehicles warrant inclusion. We analysed household consumption and expenditure surveys from ten countries in West Africa to estimate vulnerability to inadequate intake of five micronutrients, assessing wheat flour and edible oil as current standard vehicles and rice, maize, millet and sorghum as candidates. Vulnerability to inadequate intake was high acr…

Improving access to care and delivery to marginalized and vulnerable populations: a committee opinion.

It has been estimated that only a quarter of persons with infertility in the United States can sufficiently access infertility care. Against this backdrop of disparity, specific populations, including persons of color, sexual and gender minorities, immigrants, and lower-income persons, face barriers that further constrain access to care. This document outlines these communities' barriers and reviews best practice recommendations to extend inclusive access to care for marginalized populations. This reference is intended to support health professionals with knowledge of barriers that limit acces
