Wildfire Exposure and Respiratory Health: A Comprehensive Review of Emerging Evidence.

In January 2025, a catastrophic wildfire in Los Angeles, California, resulted in extensive economic losses and created a substantial risk to public respiratory health. With the progression of climate change, the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires have become a critical global issue due to their substantial impact on respiratory health. Wildfire smoke comprises elevated levels of ambient air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3), and a range of toxic substances. Notably, wildfire-related PM is especially detrime…

Organic Chemical Contaminants in Water System Infrastructure Following Wildfire.

Wildfires have destroyed multiple residential communities in California in recent years. After fires in 2017 and 2018, high concentrations of benzene and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were found in public drinking water systems in fire-affected areas. The sources of the contamination and appropriate remediation have been urgent matters for investigation. This study characterizes target and non-target VOCs and semi volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in water from a highly contaminated service line after the 2018 Camp Fire (Paradise, CA). Ninety-five organic compounds were identified o…

Wildfire exposure analysis on the national forests in the Pacific Northwest, USA.

We analyzed wildfire exposure for key social and ecological features on the national forests in Oregon and Washington. The forests contain numerous urban interfaces, old growth forests, recreational sites, and habitat for rare and endangered species. Many of these resources are threatened by wildfire, especially in the east Cascade Mountains fire-prone forests. The study illustrates the application of wildfire simulation for risk assessment where the major threat is from large and rare naturally ignited fires, versus many previous studies that have focused on risk driven by frequent and small

An analysis of effects of San Diego wildfire on ambient air quality.

The impact of major gaseous and particulate pollutants emitted by the wildfire of October 2003 on ambient air quality and health of San Diego residents before, during, and after the fire are analyzed using data available from the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District and California Air Resources Board. It was found that fine particulate matter (PM) levels exceeded the federal daily 24-hr average standard during the fire. There was a slight increase in some of the gaseous pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, which exceeded federal standards. Ozone (O3) precursors, such as total hydroc

Characteristics and trend of the wildfire activity in the Southern Hemisphere (2003-2022).

Global wildfire activity has a major impact on regional climates because of the large amount of particulate matter injected into the atmosph … d to all fires. This may be attributed to an increase in fire activity driven by the sensitivity of wildfires in the SAM region to climatic conditions and their recent changes, as well as to regional land-use practices and fire management strategies.

Machine learning analysis of Iran's wildfire landscape and anthropogenic influences.

Wildfires pose significant challenges globally, including in Iran. This study analyzes wildfire occurrences in Iran from 2001 to 2022, using NASA FIRMS' active fire detections MCD14DL data. To enhance the reliability of this satellite-based dataset, particularly in data-scarce regions like Iran, we applied a multi-sensor cross-validation framework before modeling. We also aim to examine the country's wildfire dynamics over two decades, employing k-means clustering to categorize wildfires into ten clusters, delineating fire zones. Two random forest regression models explore the relationships be…

Wildfire damages and the cost-effective role of forest fuel treatments.

Wildfires are among the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century, intensified by the accumulation of forest fuels after a century of fire suppression policies. Although fuel-reduction treatments ("fuel treatments") are a primary tool for reducing wildfire risk, they remain underutilized, partly owing to limited evidence of their economic value. In this study, we integrated high-resolution data on wildfires, fuel treatments, suppression effort, and damages across the Western United States to assess their cost-effectiveness. Using a quasi-experimental design, we found that fuel…

Wildfire smoke and health: current evidence, mechanisms, and future challenges.

In the era of climate change, numerous regions worldwide are facing a surge in both the frequency and unprecedented scale of wildfires. Exposure to wildfire smoke poses substantial risks to health, especially for vulnerable populations. Although previous studies have shed light on health effects of wildfire smoke, crucial research gaps persist, including long-term health effects, interactions with pre-existing health conditions, and health disparities. Closing these gaps is vital to enhancing the ability to safeguard public health during wildfire events and to formulate effective strategies fo…

Global disparities in indoor wildfire-PM2.5 exposure and mitigation costs.

Wildfires have become more frequent and severe, and evidence showed that exposure to wildfire-caused PM2.5 (fire-PM2.5) is associated with adverse health effects. Fire-PM2.5 exposure occurs mainly indoors, where people spend most of their time. As an effective and timely approach of mitigating indoor PM2.5 pollution, air purifiers incur notable associated costs. However, the long-term global population exposure to indoor fire-PM2.5 and the economic burden of using air purifiers remain unknown. Here, we estimated the indoor fire-PM2.5 concentration and the cost of reducing indoor PM2.5 exposure…

Predicting health impacts of wildfire smoke in Amazonas basin, Brazil.

Worldwide, smoke from forest fires has deleterious health effects. Even so, because of the complexity of fire mechanics, public health authorities face challenges in forecasting and thus mitigating population exposure to smoke. The population in the Amazon basin regularly suffers from fire smoke tied to agriculture and land-use change. The people of Manaus, a city of two million in the center of the basin, suffer the consequences. The study herein evaluates the time lag between fire occurrence and hospital admission for cardiorespiratory illness. Understanding the time lag is key to forecastin

Intersection of Wildfire and Legacy Mining Poses Risks to Water Quality.

Mining and wildfires are both landscape disturbances that pose elevated and substantial hazards to water supplies and ecosystems due to increased erosion and transport of sediment, metals, and debris to downstream waters. The risk to water supplies may be amplified when these disturbances occur in the same watershed. This work describes mechanisms by which the intersection of mining and wildfire may lead to elevated metal concentrations in downstream waters: (1) conveyance of metal-rich ash and soil to surface waters, (2) increased dissolution and transport of dissolved metals due to direct co…

Fine Particles in Wildfire Smoke and Pediatric Respiratory Health in California.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Exposure to airborne fine particles with diameters ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) pollution is a well-established cause of respi … than PM2.5 from other sources, particularly for children aged 0 to 5 years. Even relatively modest wildfires and associated PM2.5 resolved on our record produced major health impacts, particularly for younger children, in comparison with ambient PM2.5.

Prioritizing conserved areas threatened by wildfire and fragmentation for monitoring and management.

In many parts of the world, the combined effects of habitat fragmentation and altered disturbance regimes pose a significant threat to biodiversity. This is particularly true in Mediterranean-type ecosystems (MTEs), which tend to be fire-prone, species rich, and heavily impacted by human land use. Given the spatial complexity of overlapping threats and species' vulnerability along with limited conservation budgets, methods are needed for prioritizing areas for monitoring and management in these regions. We developed a multi-criteria Pareto ranking methodology for prioritizing spatial units for

Wildfire exposure and fuel management on western US national forests.

Substantial investments in fuel management activities on national forests in the western US are part of a national strategy to reduce human and ecological losses from catastrophic wildfire and create fire resilient landscapes. Prioritizing these investments within and among national forests remains a challenge, partly because a comprehensive assessment that establishes the current wildfire risk and exposure does not exist, making it difficult to identify national priorities and target specific areas for fuel management. To gain a broader understanding of wildfire exposure in the national fores

Influence of fuels, weather and the built environment on the exposure of property to wildfire.

Wildfires can pose a significant risk to people and property. Billions of dollars are spent investing in fire management actions in an attempt to reduce the risk of loss. One of the key areas where money is spent is through fuel treatment--either fuel reduction (prescribed fire) or fuel removal (fuel breaks). Individual treatments can influence fire size and the maximum distance travelled from the ignition and presumably risk, but few studies have examined the landscape level effectiveness of these treatments. Here we use a Bayesian Network model to examine the relative influence of the built …

Analyzing seasonal patterns of wildfire exposure factors in Sardinia, Italy.

In this paper, we applied landscape scale wildfire simulation modeling to explore the spatiotemporal patterns of wildfire likelihood and intensity in the island of Sardinia (Italy). We also performed wildfire exposure analysis for selected highly valued resources on the island to identify areas characterized by high risk. We observed substantial variation in burn probability, fire size, and flame length among time periods within the fire season, which starts in early June and ends in late September. Peak burn probability and flame length were observed in late July. We found that patterns of wi
