BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that livestock-handling injuries are among the most severe of agricultural injuries. This study identifies the costs, characteristics, and contributing factors associated with livestock-handling injuries among Colorado dairy farmers, cattle/livestock raisers, and cattle dealers.
METHODS: A 10-year (1997-2006) history of Colorado's workers' compensation claims data was used for analysis. Descriptive analyses of livestock-handling injury claims were performed. Claim cost analysis was also conducted. The agent-host-environment epidemiological model was

UNLABELLED: Comparisons of outcomes after rotator cuff repair between Worker's Compensation Board (WCB) recipients and nonrecipients generally do not consider patient, injury, and shoulder characteristics. We compared preoperative differences between WCB recipients and nonrecipients and determined the impact on their 6-month postoperative outcome. We evaluated a prospective cohort of 141 patients with full-thickness rotator cuff tears, 36 of whom (26%) were WCB recipients, preoperatively and 3 and 6 months after rotator cuff repair. Their mean age was 54.0 +/- 10.4 years (standard deviation) a

BACKGROUND: Falls from heights, including falls from nonmoving trucks, are a known cause of serious workplace injuries [1,2,4,6,7,14,15]. Subsequent to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) of Ontario implementing an industry sector management approach for service delivery the principle author noted a number of serious injuries as a consequence of falls from trucks or truck trailers. A literature search revealed limited articles, specifically relating to injuries sustained in falls from trucks or truck trailers. It was therefore decided to further investigate the scope of the problem

BACKGROUND: Risk of work-related injuries/illnesses among females has not been well documented. This study compares compensable work-related injuries/illnesses between females and males across all major industrial sectors and occupations using a state-managed Workers Compensation database.
METHODS: Incidence rates were calculated by dividing the number of compensable injuries/illnesses among West Virginia Workers Compensation claimants by the total number of female and male workers in each specific industry class (based on SIC codes). Gender-specific denominators for occupations were estimate

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common work-related injuries and a leading cause of work disability. We studied patients from a single community who had carpal tunnel releases (CTRs), comparing duration of preoperative symptoms and severity of nerve dysfunction among workers compensation and nonworkers compensation recipients. Included in the study were 131 patients who had a total of 187 primary CTRs done by a single surgeon. Duration of preoperative symptoms was significantly longer for nonworkers compensation patients than for workers compensation patients (p < 0.01). A smal

Workers' compensation claims in Ohio were evaluated as a source of surveillance data for identifying workplaces at high risk of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) and analyzed for their demographic and industrial characteristics. During a 5-year period (1980 to 1984), 6,849 workers' compensation claims met the case criteria for CTDs. Tenosynovitis due to continuous motion was the most frequently reported condition (58%), and the wrist was the body part most frequently affected (48%). The highest case rate was observed for female workers in the 36 to 45 age group. Incidence rates for individual

AIMS: To characterize psychotropic medicine utilization and identify its correlates in injured Australian workers with back and neck-related conditions following a workers' compensation claim.
METHODS: Psychotropic medicine utilization (antidepressants, gabapentinoids, anxiolytics, hypnotics/sedatives and antipsychotics) was examined among 22 595 injured workers with accepted claims (2010-2016) in Victoria, Australia, over three years post-claim. The defined daily dose (DDD) per 1000 workers per day was used to describe utilization and temporal trends. Zero-inflated negative binomial regressi

Overexertion is a leading cause of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among construction workers. Nearly 90% of construction jobs require manual handling of materials for approximately one half of the worker's time (1). In 2015, overexertion from lifting and lowering materials caused 30% of WMSDs among construction workers; overexertion involving pushing, pulling, holding, carrying, and catching materials caused an additional 37% of WMSDs (1). This study examined the rate and cost of WMSD claims from overexertion among Ohio construction workers during 2007-2017. Workers' compensati

A comprehensive safety and managed care initiative was instituted in 1991 at a large self-insured medical center in an effort to reduce workers' compensation costs. It features an on-site case management team, a preferred provider organization, and safety engineering efforts and ergonomic controls used proactively to aggressively identify and abate workplace hazards. Two worker populations were followed up longitudinally for three years before and after the initiative. Costs incurred by each cohort were compared. A 50% reduction in total expenditures was seen in the managed care cohort. The ho

In 1898 the compulsory work accident insurance was introduced in the Italian legislation: both public and private organizations could provide insurance to the workers. In 1933 the Cassa Nazionale Infortuni (founded in 1884) was unified to other small public funds in a single body, the Italian Workers' Compensation Authority (INAIL). During the post-war recovery INAIL founded hospitals and wards fully dedicated to work traumas (Orthopaedic Traumatic Centres or Burns Centres) and opened rehabilitation and prosthetic centres for injured workers. In this view, INAIL and Italian National Olympic Co

BACKGROUND: This study examined age-group differences in the rate, severity, and cost of injuries among construction workers to support evidence-based worker safety and health interventions in the construction industry.
METHODS: Ohio workers' compensation claims for construction workers were used to estimate claim rates and costs by age group. We analyzed claims data auto-coded into five event/exposure categories: transportation incidents; slips, trips, and falls (STFs); exposure to harmful substances and environments; contact with objects and equipment (COB); overexertion and bodily reaction

INTRODUCTION: Workers' compensation injuries entail burdensome financial and social costs. This study's objective was to describe cost and frequency of workplace injuries in aviation manufacturing in the state of Kansas using workers' compensation data. Manufacturing incurs more workers' compensation claims in Kansas than any other industry, and aviation contributes more of those claims than any other sub sector.
METHOD: Workers' compensation insurance and reporting are required in the state of Kansas. Data were provided by the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and included all closed workers

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common occupational pathology, representing a high percentage of workers' compensation (WC) claims.
METHODS: The literature was reviewed for all studies evaluating CTS outcomes including WC patients between 1993 and 2016. A total of 348 articles were identified; 25 of which met inclusion and exclusion criteria. A systematic review was generated; patient demographics, outcomes, and complications were recorded. Weighted averages were calculated for the demographic and outcome data. Categorical data such as complications were pooled from the studies

The purpose of this study was to provide new insight into the etiology of primarily nonfatal, work-related electrical injuries. We developed a multistage, case-selection algorithm to identify electrical-related injuries from workers' compensation claims and a customized coding taxonomy to identify pre-injury circumstances. Workers' compensation claims routinely collected over a 1-year period from a large U.S. insurance provider were used to identify electrical-related injuries using an algorithm that evaluated: coded injury cause information, nature of injury, "accident" description, and injur

BACKGROUND: Obese individuals have increased morbidity and use of health services. Less is known about the effect of obesity on workers' compensation. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) and number and types of workers' compensation claims, associated costs, and lost workdays.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. Participants included 11 728 health care and university employees (34 858 full-time equivalents [FTEs]) with at least 1 health risk appraisal between Januar

STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the outcomes of workers' compensation (WC) claimants who have had a lumbar intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET) procedure.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: IDET was developed as a less invasive treatment alternative to fusion after failure of conservative treatment for discogenic low back pain (LBP). Initial IDET case series from single practices have reported improved pain, function, and return to work outcomes. Little is known about results when performed by a variety of providers or in WC populations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: LBP cases that

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare mortality after disabling and nondisabling occupational injuries.
METHODS: Vital status was ascertained through 2020 for 2077 individuals with a workers' compensation claim for upper extremity neuropathy in West Virginia in 1998 or 1999. Standardized mortality ratios compared mortality to the West Virginia general population. Hazard ratios (HRs) obtained from Cox regression models compared mortality among those with and without lost work time or permanent disability.
RESULTS: Overall, the standardized mortality ratio for accidental

BACKGROUND: Workers' compensation (WC) patients are susceptible to poorer outcomes following primary rotator cuff repair (RCR). Failure of structural healing can explain some poor results, and outcomes of revision RCR in this population are unknown.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of individuals receiving WC who underwent arthroscopic revision RCR with or without dermal allograft augmentation at a single institution between January 2010 and April 2021. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were assessed for rotator cuff tear characteristics, Sugaya classification,
