A unique case of osteomyelitis of the femoral neck of an eleven-year-old boy, following a stab wound by a lead pencil, with reactive synovitis of the hip joint is presented. The clinical course simulated that of acute septic arthritis and was diagnosed by various imaging modalities. Following operation and systemic antibiotic treatment, the patient improved dramatically. The role of sonography in the presence of inflammatory conditions around the hip joint is emphasized.

Major abdominal arteriovenous fistula (AVF), including external iliac vessels, is a rare condition. If untreated long term, AVFs may cause venous hypertension and heart failure. We report the case of a 47-year-old man who stabbed his left lower abdomen. His vital signs were stable. Computed tomography revealed hemoperitoneum and a left external iliac AVF. Prior to laparotomy, endovascular repair of AVF was performed. Subsequent laparotomy was performed, and omental injury and a small bowel injury were repaired. Exploration of the retroperitoneal hematoma showed no bleeding from the external il

The article describes a case of successful managenent of arterial priapism in a patient with a stab wound in the perianal area. Timely performed angiography revealed a pathological connection between a. Uretralis sinistra and spongy body. Disruption of the abnormal shunt resulted in immediate relief of erection with further preservation of erectile function. At the 3 and 6 months follow-up visits there were no signs of cavernous fibrosis or erectile dysfunction. The authors analyze the entire sequence of events in the management of the case, identify shortcomings, determine their significance

BACKGROUND: When treating patients with stab injuries of the torso, clinicians often lack timely information about the degree and nature of internal organ damage. An externally observable sign significantly associated with characteristics of torso injuries may therefore be useful for practitioners. One such potential sign is the presence of wounds to the hands, sometimes sustained during victims' attempt to defend themselves during the violent altercation. Thus, the primary aim of this study was to evaluate the association between presence of upper extremity wounds and the severity of the thor

A woman was stabbed 10 times and killed. The suspect confessed that he had used a thick (0.7 cm), single-edged survival knife with a serrated spine. However, the bilateral ends of the stab wounds appeared sharp. To address this discrepancy, we used pig skin to examine whether the knife could have been used to make the thin stab wounds observed. The widths of the pig skin wounds were approximately half the width of the knife and the ends of some wounds appeared sharp, particularly when the knife was held at a right angle. It was concluded that the suspect could have killed the victim using the

We sought to determine the effect of postmortem ventilation in combination with a suction pump in cases showing penetrating trauma to the chest with haemo- and/or pneumothorax, for better evaluation of the lungs in postmortem computed tomography (PMCT). The study included 6 subjects (1 female, 5 male; age 32-67years) with a penetrating gunshot or stab wound to the chest and consecutive pneumo- and/or haemothorax. The pneumo- and haemothorax were evacuated by a suction pump, and postmortem ventilation was applied using a home care ventilator. PMCT images with and without postmortem ventilation

A prospective study involving 179 patients with cranial and orbital stab wounds was undertaken to evaluate the incidence and relationship of clinical findings, radiographs, and computed tomography (CT) findings and treatment decision. Indications for a CT scanning of the head are a of loss of consciousness, convulsions, any neurological deficit, palpable or visible fracture on the skull X-ray film after an attack with a sharp instrument, presence of an impaling weapon. A CT scan and plain radiography were performed in 179 patients. There were pathological CT findings in 128 patients (71.51%).

Stab wounds of the heart are frequent: one case every two and a half months in our service. In our series of 9 cases, only three were alive at arrival to the emergency ward, but in all of these three, treatment was simple requiring only simple wound suture without extra-corporeal circulation. Based on our experience and the data in the literature, we propose cooperation between three teams for managing these patients: anaesthesists, echocardiographists and cardiothoracic surgeons. The patients are admitted directly to the cardiothoracic operating theatre where the echocardiographist and the su

This prospective study comprises 651 patients with knife wounds of the anterior abdomen. Three hundred and forty-five patients (53%) had symptoms of an acute abdomen on admission and were operated on immediately. The remaining 306 patients (47%) were managed conservatively with serial clinical examinations. This group included 26 patients with omental or intestinal evisceration, 18 patients with air under the diaphragm, 12 patients with blood found on abdominal paracentesis, and 18 patients with shock on admission. Only 11 patients (3.6%) needed subsequent operation, and there was no mortality

The length of the wound channel of a stab wound is a morphological feature that can serve as a criterion for assessing the degree of force of a knife strike. A study of 412 stab wounds to the chest and abdomen in 252 homicide cases showed that clothing, bone-cartilaginous structures and the density of internal organs did not affect the depth of immersion of the knife blade in the wound. The wound channel of non-penetrating wounds with a length of less than 6 cm indicates an impact of «moderate» force. The length of the wound channel of penetrating wounds from 6 to 15 cm corresponds to an impac

A case of spinal cord injury due to stab wounds by a kitchen knife is presented. A 41-year-old male was hospitalized because of spinal cord injury resulting from stab wounds inflicted with a kitchen knife in the posterior cervical area. Neurological examination on admission showed paraplegia, disappearance of deep tendon reflex in both lower extremities, sensory disturbance below T1 level, left Horner's syndrome and urinary disturbance. In addition to these symptoms cerebrospinal fluid was leaking from the wounds. An emergency operation was performed. After laminectomy of C7 and T1, we found t

One hundred twenty-three patients with lower chest and abdominal stab wounds were evaluated. If chest wounds were located between the two anterior axillary lines and abdominal examination was negative, peritoneal lavage was performed. If abdominal wounds were located between the two anterior axillary lines and physical examination was negative, local exploration was performed followed by lavage if local exploration was positive. Patients with negative lavage were observed and those with positive lavage were operated upon. Of the patients in this selected series 69.9% were spared an operative p

The patient in this case report is a 17-year-old male individual who presented as a victim of an assault by knife attack that resulted in a cut below the left elbow, and the knife was stuck at the site of injury. He complained of pain at the site of injury, in addition to an inability to pull out the knife. Physical examination showed a knife stuck below the elbow with normal sensation, pulsations, and range of motion. Laboratory investigations and an X-ray were ordered for the patient. X-ray showed a penetrating knife wound through the left forearm, passing through the radius and ulna, with s

A man in his 50s was stabbed deeply in the back with a knife and brought to the emergency room. He was found to have a significant left hemopneumothorax. He was planned to undergo hemostatic surgery under general anesthesia. However, shortly after the change in a right lateral decubitus position, he experienced ventricular fibrillation. Hemostasis of the intercostal artery injury, the source of bleeding, and suture of the injured visceral pleura were performed under extracorporeal membrance oxgenation( ECMO). Although sinus rhythm was resumed, when positive pressure ventilation was applied to
