Teenage depression: a cultural-interpersonal-intrapsychic perspective.

The "crossroads families" are caught between old value systems and American mainstream goals. Traditional family and sex-related roles and orientations conflict with those of the new social system. In turn, neither of the teenager's orientations--toward home or toward peer activity--is validated. In the clinical case presented, Anna, at adolescence, wants to relinquish many of her household chores and enter her social world more fully. She needs unconflictual support for such a move. If this does not take place, her autonomous movement represents an unconscious betrayal of her depleted and con

Assessment of issues facing immigrant and refugee families.

This article identifies the different problems immigrants and refugees face in the United States, especially socioeconomic and psychosocial concerns that often relate to the experience of migration. Traditional familial roles and responsibilities are frequently challenged, exacerbated by sociocultural differences and inadequate understandings between the new arrivals and the host country. Essential in assessments of immigrant and refugee families is evaluating resources for social, economic, and cultural integration; discriminating between realistic and unrealistic expectations; evaluating fam

Coming to the cultural "in-between": nursing insights from a Hmong birth case study.

This article discusses the historical background and traditional beliefs of the Hmong. Cultural conflict occurs when traditional Hmong beliefs and Western health care ideologies are misunderstood. A specific case study focuses on care of a Hmong woman and her husband after a precipitous birth, hemorrhage, and surgical intervention. Nursing insights are identified from "in-between" the cultures. Establishing cultural awareness is an essential first step toward cultural competence.

Psychological distress among recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union to Israel, II. The effects of the Gulf War.

The psychological effects of the Gulf War were studied on a group of Israeli civilians particularly at risk, viz. recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union. A quasi-experimental design was used. A sample of immigrants who had already been screened for psychological distress just before the war were reassessed after the war with the same instrument (PERI demoralization questionnaire). Various parameters related to the war period were also assessed. Psychological symptoms during the war were significantly associated with pre-war level of distress and with actual physical harm from the missi

Vietnamese boat refugees: the influence of war and flight traumatization on mental health on arrival in the country of resettlement. A community cohort study of Vietnamese refugees in Norway.

A consecutive cohort of 145 adult Vietnamese refugees were personally interviewed and completed the Symptom Checklist 90 R self-rating scale on arrival in Norway. Sixty-two percent had witnessed bombing, fires and shooting, 48% had witnessed other people being wounded or killed and 36% had been involved in life-threatening situations or had been wounded in the war. Nearly all war trauma variables but none of the escape or refugee camp variables were significantly related to mental health 7 years after the end of the war. War trauma was significantly associated with mental health, also when age

Culture, social structure, and quandaries of psychiatric diagnosis: a Vietnamese case study.

In contemporary psychiatry diagnosis is arguably the most important concern of a clinical evaluation insofar as it operates as a scaffolding for therapeutic plans and recommendations. Implicit in the theory and lore of diagnosis is that disorders exist as naturalistic entities possessed of a distinctive form and course. In the event of a complex clinical presentation, a psychiatrist resorts to multiple diagnoses and the use of a rule-out diagnosis, (or several rule-outs). The first practice reflects the dictum of comorbidity. Rule-out diagnoses, on the other hand, support the idea that in some

Two-year follow up study of stress-related disorders among immigrants to Israel from the Chernobyl area.

We report on findings from a 2-year follow-up study of immigrants originating from exposed areas around the site of the 1986 Chernobyl accid … ong impact on both mental and physical health. Since all respondents were engaged in the process of acculturation and accommodation to a new country after emigration, it is encouraging that this study shows that levels of psychological distress are waning as the new immigrants are absorbed into Israeli society. However, there still remains some independent effe …

Immigrant-origin adolescent mental and sexual health disparities in the USA: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents of immigrant-origin in the USA experience unique barriers that contribute to mental and sexual health disparities. These include acculturation stress, language barriers, structural exclusion from health and social services, conflicting cultural norms, familial obligation and internalised conflict arising from intersecting identities. While the mental and sexual health of adolescents, including within this population, is often examined separately, limited evidence examines the intersection of these areas of adolescent health and well-being. This review aims to identify…

Threats and Interventions on Wellbeing in Asylum Seekers in the Netherlands: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Most asylum seekers experience stress, not only due to the reason for fleeing and their travel but also due to their compulsory stay in the asylum seeker center in the Netherlands and the asylum procedure. This often leads to self-medication and addiction which causes lower self-esteem and lower quality of life. Adverse life events, forced migration, and prolonged asylum procedures, in addition to the complexity of the acculturation process, can all contribute to higher levels of psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: What are the threats to wellbeing in terms of mental health, psychosocial,…

Impact of Voluntary Folic Acid Fortification of Corn Masa Flour on RBC Folate Concentrations in the U.S. (NHANES 2011-2018).

Surveillance data have highlighted continued disparities in neural tube defects (NTDs) by race-ethnicity in the United States. Starting in 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized voluntary folic acid fortification of corn masa flour to reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) among infants of Hispanic women of reproductive age. To assess the impact of voluntary corn masa fortification, cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 for Hispanic women of reproductive age with available red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrat

Explaining elevated social anxiety among Asian Americans: emotional attunement and a cultural double bind.

Previous research has documented elevated levels of social anxiety in Asian American college students when compared with their European American peers. The authors hypothesized that higher symptoms among Asians could be explained by cultural differences in attunement to the emotional states of others. Socialization within interdependent cultures may cultivate concerns about accurately perceiving other's emotional responses, yet at the same time, norms governing emotional control may limit competencies in emotion recognition. A sample of 264 Asian American and European American college students

Perceived problems with access to medical care and depression among older Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, other Hispanics, and a comparison group of non-Hispanic Whites.

The relationship between problems accessing medical care and depression is examined in a sample of older Hispanics (Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Other Hispanic) in Massachusetts and a comparison group of same-neighborhood non-Hispanic Whites. The research questions are: Do older Hispanics experience more problems with access to medical care than do older non-Hispanic Whites? What types of access problems do Hispanics encounter, and how do these relate to depression symptoms? The data come from the Massachusetts Hispanic Elders Study; descriptive and multivariate regression analysis procedures

[Psychiatric disorders in immigrants. I. History, symptoms and diagnostic classification].

155 people who had left East-Germany and sought psychiatric help within six weeks after their arrival in West Berlin, were examined. History, living situation and psychopathological symptoms were studied. The disorders were diagnosed according to ICD-9 and DSM-III-R. 85% of the patients reported that they had already suffered from similar complaints in East Germany. 50% stated they have had symptoms before they had made the decision to leave. On average, that decision had been taken 22 months before the actual leaving. Most often patients complained about sleep disturbance, nervousness, and he

The responsibilities of intervention in isolated societies.

Development pressures are pushing industrial society into the remaining refuge areas of the world. As it spreads it destroys much of the biological and cultural variety that has evolved over millions of years. Not only is mammalian life diminishing, but also the genetic pool of plants and cultivars, as well as the culture-specific knowledge of their use. Even culture itself, the highest attribute of mankind, is being rapidly erased, often before any attempts are made to record it. The medical problems of remaining tribal groups are severe. Western medicine has developed to deal with western pr

Between Synergy and Travesty: A Sexual Risk Syndemic Among Pregnant Latina Immigrant and Non-immigrant Adolescents.

Substance use, intimate partner violence, and depression contribute to sexual risk individually, yet have not been evaluated as a syndemic for adolescents. Using data from 772 pregnant Latina adolescents, we evaluated these factors as a syndemic and tested the moderating role of immigration. Bivariate analyses showed syndemic score (OR = 1.40, p = 0.02) and severity (OR = 1.68, p = 0.006) were predictors for multiple sex partners, and syndemic score predicting STIs (OR = 1.15, p = 0.05). Syndemic severity remained significant in multivariate analyses for multiple sex partners (OR = 1.53, p = 0

Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and their Relationship to Drug and Alcohol use in an International Sample of Latino Immigrants.

We identify the prevalence and correlates of posttraumatic stress (PTSD) symptoms and their relationship to alcohol and substance use disorders (AUD/SUD) among Latino immigrants in two countries. A screening battery assessing PTSD symptoms (PCL-C), alcohol use (AUDIT), drug abuse (DAST), and psychological measures was administered to 562 Latino immigrants recruited in clinics. We used logistical regression analyses to evaluate the relationship between PTSD symptoms and AUD/SUD. Prevalence of elevated PTSD symptoms was high (53.7 % in Boston, 47.9 % in Madrid and, 43.8 % in Barcelona). Screenin

Depressive Symptoms and Weight Status Among Women Recently Immigrating to the US.

Objectives Depressive symptoms have been associated with obesity. Little is known about this relationship among immigrants. We examined relationships between depressive symptoms and weight status in immigrant women from three ethnic groups. Methods Participants were Brazilian, Haitian, and Latina women (n = 345) enrolled in Live Well, a community-based, randomized intervention designed to prevent weight gain in recent immigrants. Study data are from baseline when participants completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Perceived Stress Scale, a physical activity

Health Risk Behaviors by Length of Time in the United States Among High School Students in Five Sites.

One in five public school students is from an immigrant-headed household. We used Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from one state and four large urban school districts to examine whether length of time living in the US was associated with health risk behaviors. Logistic regression models, using weighted data, controlled for sex, race/ethnicity, and grade. Compared to US natives, not having always lived in the US was correlated with lower risk for some behaviors (e.g., current marijuana use and alcohol use) among high school students, but higher risk for other behaviors (e.g., attempted suicide,
