Effects of the visual modality on acoustic reflex magnitude.

Acoustic reflex magnitude for nine normal hearing subjects was measured with eyes opened and closed under three visual modality conditions: (1) in darkness; (2) in light without the ability to focus; and (3) in light with the ability to focus. Reflex magnitude decreased with eyes open for all three visual modality conditions; however, greater magnitude reduction occurred when the eyes were able to focus. Magnitude reduction for the three visual conditions was: 7% in darkness; 11% without visual focusing; and 20% with visual focusing. Additional data presented suggests reflex magnitude changes

Acoustic neuromas presenting with symptoms of morbus Menière.

If a patient with Menière's disease or a sudden deafness does not respond to adequate therapy, an acoustic neuroma should be excluded. This is achieved by a positive contrast cisternography using multidirectional tomography. The examples might have shown that sometimes acoustic neuromas present with atypical symptoms, with sudden deafness or even with the typical symptoms of morbus menière.

Hearing investigation in relation to the duration of acoustic signals.

The present study was designed to test the peculiarities of hearing perception on dependence of acoustic signal duration both in normal hearing subjects and in those with conductive and sensorineural deafness. It was found that in patients with pure conductive hearing impairment the shortest time necessary for tonal sensation of the sound signal corresponded to normal values. However, in 35 out of 63 patients investigated with cochlear deafness, it was found that the signal had to be of longer duration before pitch could be distinguished from a click.

Negative needle deflection of the acoustic reflex in otosclerotics.

The preoperative audiometric and electroacoustic impedance test results of 24 surgically confirmed otosclerotics are reviewed with special attention given to the direction of needle deflection during acoustic reflex testing. Information on the direction of needle deflection during acoustic reflex testing was gathered at 5 or 10 dB above reflex threshold. In 12 of the 24 patients acoustic reflexes were present, and in each case the response included negative needle deflections. The presence or absence of the acoustic reflex seemed to be related to the reported duration of the hearing loss.

Clinical acoustic reflex threshold measurements in infants.

Acoustic reflex thresholds elicited using clinical acoustic impedance techniques were obtained on normal infants between one month and one year of age. Reflex activating signals of 500, 1000, 2000 Hz, low-pass, high-pass, and white noise were used. Less intensity was required to elicit the acoustic reflex to the noise than to the pure tones, with the 500-Hz tone requiring the greatest intensity. Inference of auditory thresholds from the acoustic reflex indicated the presence of normal hearing in the infant group.

Acoustic trauma from the bone cutting burr.

The amplitudes of the stapes footplate movements were determined in human temporal bones when the ossicular chain was drilled with a cutting and a diamond burr. High movements result in comparison to physiological data. The frequency distribution resembles the dB (A) curve. The intensity compared to sound pressure levels on the ear drum is higher than I30 dB. The pressure is constant over the period of contact between the burr and the ossicle. Most likely these unphysiologic movements of the stapes footplate can cause inner ear damage as we had to admit in a case of facial nerve decompression.

The structural maturation of the stato-acoustic nerve in the cat.

The maturation of the stato-acoustic nerve in the cat was studied by light and electron microscopy from the fetal stage to the adult. Measurement of the outer diameter of the fibers and the study of the myelination process revealed that myelination begins earlier for the vestibular nerve than for the cochlear nerve: by the fifty-third day of gestation 64% of the vestibular fibres have already passed the promyelin stage whereas for the cochlear nerve this promyelin stage begins for the majority of fibers on the fifty-seventh gestation day. Afterward, maturation proceeds more rapidly for the coc

Acoustic reflex relaxation in sensorineural hearing loss.

This study examined stapedial reflex recordings of pulsed pure tones (500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz) in 26 subjects with normal hearing and 18 with sensorineural impairment. The stapedial reflex tracings clearly differentiated the two groups of subjects. Like many of our special audiometric procedures, this test was least effective in those with mild hearing loss. The test also appeared to be useful in identifying high-frequency hearing losses. Although this reflex measurement appears to have potential as a clinical tool, additional field study appears necessary.

Intermedius nerve involvement and testing in acoustic neuromas.

The clinical findings in 125 patients with surgically confirmed acoustic neuromas are presented, with special regard to the involvement of the intermedius nerve in the diagnosis. In assessing the function of the intermedius nerve the examination of the nasolacrimal reflex and the sensation of taste on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue are used. The methods of investigation are described in detail. The material consisted of 20 medium-sized and 105 large tumours; no intracanalicular tumor was found. Hearing loss was the initial symptom in 85% of the patients, 10% had tinitus and 4% vertigo a

Acoustical studies on respiratory sounds in asthmatic patients.

Changes in the breathing sounds such as stridor and dry and wet rales in asthmatic patients were studied. The breathing sounds were recorded with the small transistor warp type microphone inserted through the nasal orifice into the trachea, main bronchi and segmental bronchi, and were analyzed with sound analyzer. The results were as follows: The whistling rales were caused by the resonance of the bronchial wall, when the vibrating frequency was coincident with its specific frequency. Snoring rales were explained as the sound caused by the air flow passing promptly through contracted bronchi w

Far-field acoustic response: origins in the cat.

Short-latency evoked potentials recorded from the vertex of adult cats in response to click stimulation (the far-field acoustic response) were analyzed in a series of lesion experiments to determine the origins of each component. The resultant data indicate that the primary generator of potential is the acoustic nerve; of potential 2, the cochlear nucleus; of potential 3, neurons of the superior olivary complex activated by projections crossing the midline; of potential 4, neurons of the ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and preolivary region activated equally by crossed and uncrossed p
