Behavioural and neuroendocrine adaptations to repeated stress during puberty in male golden hamsters.

In adult animals, the consequences of stress are often severe and long lasting. Repeated subjugation in adult male golden hamsters inhibits aggression and increases submissive and avoidant behaviours. By contrast, subjugation during puberty enhances offensive aggression. The goals of this study were to characterize behavioural and neuroendocrine responses of naïve and repeatedly subjugated juveniles to social defeat and to assess potential recovery from social stress. From the onset of puberty on postnatal day 28 (P28) to mid puberty (P42), animals were either socially subjugated or placed in

Decision-centered wearable biosensors for personalized rehabilitation: integrating multimodal monitoring, artificial intelligence, and closed-loop intervention.

Personalized rehabilitation requires repeated assessment of movement, physiological tolerance, fatigue, and adherence, yet conventional clinic-based measurements provide only intermittent snapshots. The convergence of wearable biosensors with artificial intelligence, edge-cloud computing, and connected data infrastructures creates an opportunity to convert continuous multimodal signals into timely rehabilitation decisions. This critical narrative review synthesizes physiological, biochemical, electrophysiological, biomechanical, and behavioral sensing within a monitoring-interpretation-feedbac

Is resilience linked to stress response among anesthesia professionals? A prospective simulation-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Anesthesiology is a stressful specialty characterized by high rates of burnout among its practitioners. Resilience, defined as a dynamic process of positive adaptation in the face of adversity, may serve as a protective factor. However, the relationship between resilience and the acute stress response remains poorly understood. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that higher resilience levels would be associated with attenuated physiological and psychological stress responses during a standardized anesthetic crisis simulation. METHODS: Participants included anesthesiologists,

A Jacketed Telemetry Method for Monitoring Cardiorespiratory Adaptation During Exercise in Rats.

The assessment of cardiorespiratory adaptation during exercise is not only crucial for studying physiological adaptation to physical training, but also essential for preclinical research, as measurements at rest can mask underlying physiological phenomena. However, conventional preclinical methods, such as surgically implanted telemetry or hermetic chambers, come with important constraints. To overcome these limitations, we present a surgery-free methodology using a jacketed telemetry system, enabling the simultaneous monitoring of heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RespR), and locomotor activ

Lipidomic signatures of heat tolerance in mungbean [Vigna radiata(L.) Wilczek] reveal reduced fatty acid unsaturation.

Heat stress is a major environmental constraint limiting plant growth and productivity, including in mungbean (Vigna radiata). Although physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of mungbean to elevated temperature have been widely investigated, the role of heat stress-induced leaf lipidome reconfiguration in thermotolerance remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we examined physiological, biochemical, and lipid metabolic responses to heat stress in two contrasting mungbean genotypes: PI425243 (heat-tolerant) and PI223002 (heat-sensitive), grown under non-stress (34/25 °C d

Gravity-awareness: a deep learning and LLM framework for predicting human adaptation to altered gravitational environments.

Earth's gravity fundamentally shapes human behavior. The brain encodes this force as an internal model of gravity, enabling the prediction and interpretation of gravitational effects during perception and action. Understanding how this model adapts to altered gravity is critical for predicting human performance in spaceflight. We present a computational framework for modelling neurophysiological adaptation across diverse gravitational environments. The framework has two components trained on open-access data from altered-gravity studies, particularly parabolic flights. The first component (Cor

[Body Function Changes and Prevention Strategies in High-Altitude Environment].

In high-altitude regions, the unique challenges posed by the low-oxygen environment exert significant stress on the physiological functions of the human body. Currently, there is an urgent need to develop a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment strategies, as well as effective interventions, of altitude sickness. In this paper, we explored the self-regulatory mechanisms of the human body in such extreme environments, elaborating on the adaptive mechanisms at the molecular level and the process of acclimatization to high altitudes. Furthermore, we summarized the his

Cardiac cAMP-PKA Signaling Compartmentalization in Myocardial Infarction.

Under physiological conditions, cAMP signaling plays a key role in the regulation of cardiac function. Activation of this intracellular signaling pathway mirrors cardiomyocyte adaptation to various extracellular stimuli. Extracellular ligand binding to seven-transmembrane receptors (also known as GPCRs) with G proteins and adenylyl cyclases (ACs) modulate the intracellular cAMP content. Subsequently, this second messenger triggers activation of specific intracellular downstream effectors that ensure a proper cellular response. Therefore, it is essential for the cell to keep the cAMP signaling

In Vivo Evaluation of Physiologic Control Algorithms for Left Ventricular Assist Devices Based on Left Ventricular Volume or Pressure.

Turbodynamic left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) provide a continuous flow depending on the speed at which the pump is set, and do not adapt to the changing requirements of the patient. The limited adaptation of the pump flow (PF) to the amount of venous return can lead to ventricular suction or overload. Physiologic control may compensate such situations by an automatic adaptation of the PF to the volume status of the left ventricle. We evaluated two physiologic control algorithms in an acute study with eight healthy pigs. Both controllers imitate the Frank-Starling law of the heart and a

Molecular and physiological changes in the SpaceX Inspiration4 civilian crew.

Human spaceflight has historically been managed by government agencies, such as in the NASA Twins Study1, but new commercial spaceflight opportunities have opened spaceflight to a broader population. In 2021, the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission launched the first all-civilian crew to low Earth orbit, which included the youngest American astronaut (aged 29), new in-flight experimental technologies (handheld ultrasound imaging, smartwatch wearables and immune profiling), ocular alignment measurements and new protocols for in-depth, multi-omic molecular and cellular profiling. Here we report the prim

miR-206 enforces a slow muscle phenotype.

Striated muscle is a highly specialized collection of tissues with contractile properties that vary according to functional needs. Although muscle fiber types are established postnatally, lifelong plasticity facilitates stimulus-dependent adaptation. Functional adaptation requires molecular adaptation, which is partially provided by miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation. miR-206 is a muscle-specific miRNA enriched in slow muscles. We investigated whether miR-206 drives the slow muscle phenotype or is merely an outcome. We found that miR-206 expression increases in both physiological (

Genomic and transcriptomic analyses reveal the adaptation to semi-aquatic and aquatic life in spiders.

Spiders are largely terrestrial, but some lineages have independently adapted to marine and freshwater habitats. Although physiological and behavioral traits supporting these evolutionary transitions have been characterized, the genomic basis of adaptation to aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats in spiders remains unclear. Here, we report a chromosome-level genome assembly for the aquatic spider Argyroneta aquatica. Comparative analysis of 22 spider species supports 2 independent transitions in semi-aquatic (∼56 Mya) and aquatic (∼44 Mya) lineages. The aquatic spider shows distinct respiratory mo

No evidence of local adaptation of immune responses to Gyrodactylus in three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus).

Parasitism represents one of the most widespread lifestyles in the animal kingdom, with the potential to drive coevolutionary dynamics with their host population. Where hosts and parasites evolve together, we may find local adaptation. As one of the main host defences against infection, there is the potential for the immune response to be adapted to local parasites. In this study, we used the three-spined stickleback and its Gyrodactylus parasites to examine the extent of local adaptation of parasite infection dynamics and the immune response to infection. We took two geographically isolated h

Nitric Oxide and Hydrogen Sulfide Crosstalk in Plants: Redox Regulation, Stress Adaptation, and Emerging Applications.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are key gasotransmitters that regulate multiple aspects of plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. Although their individual signaling pathways have been extensively investigated, the integrated mechanisms underlying NO-H2S crosstalk and its potential agronomic applications remain unclear. This review summarizes current advances in understanding the biochemical interplay between NO and H2S in plants, emphasizing their synergistic roles in redox regulation, antioxidant activation, ion homeostasis, and photosynthetic protection under abiotic

Functional analysis of HvSNAC1 in stomatal dynamics and drought adaptation.

Drought stress can damage crop growth and lead to a decline in yield, thereby affecting food security, especially in regions vulnerable to climate change. SNAC1 (stress-responsive NAC1), the NAC transcription factor family member, plays a crucial role in stomatal movement regulation. Effective regulation of stomatal movement is essential for protecting plants from water loss during adverse conditions. Our hypothesis revolves around altering HvSNAC1 activity by introducing a point mutation in its encoding gene, thereby influencing stomatal dynamics in barley. Two TILLING mutants, each harboring
