In vivo optical imaging of human adenoid cystic carcinoma cell metastasis.

A noninvasive, whole-body, real-time fluorescence optical imaging of stable high-level green fluorescent protein (GFP)-expressing human adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC-M-GFP) was demonstrated for in vivo visualization of metastatic behavior in nude mice. Five-week-old female nude mice were injected with ACC-M-GFP in the primary organ: submandibular gland. Metastases were only visualized by GFP expression in the lung. However, metastatic lesions of ACC-M-GFP in the lung, muscle, bladder and bony were found by imaging of GFP expression in intact mice through tail vein injection of ACC-M-GFP cells.

A new surgical technique for adenoid cystic carcinoma involving tracheal carina.

Reported is the successful treatment of a 24-year-old male with adenocystic carcinoma involving the tracheal carina, in which the tumor extended along the right main bronchus across the orifice of the right upper lobe. The patient underwent a carinal resection plus right upper lobectomy and reconstruction of the carina, resulting in neither anastomotic complication nor recurrence of disease during 28 months of follow-up.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with salivary duct cyst in the sublingual gland.

We described an extremely rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with salivary duct cyst in the sublingual gland of a 40-year-old Japanese woman. The tumor was growing from the cyst wall and almost occluded the cyst lumen. The epithelium lining the cyst lumen contained both keratin 19-positive cells and alpha-smooth muscle actin-positive cells, indicating the cyst being derived from the acinus/intercalated duct of the sublingual gland. Therefore, our case has presented for the first time a direct evidence that adenoid cystic carcinoma arises from acinus/intercalated duct.

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of glioblastoma multiforme with epithelial differentiation and adenoid formations.

Rare examples of high-grade gliomas show focal epithelial differentiation, which may require distinction from colliision tumors. These epithelial constituents are not well-characterized immunophenotypically and have rarely been subjected to genotyping. We describe a case of a 54-year-old female with a short history of hemiparesis who was found to have an absolute lymphocytosis and a heterogeneously enhancing frontotemporal tumor. Cytological and histological examination of brain biopsies confirmed the presence of a glioblastoma multiforme also containing CAM5.2/CK7/BerEP4/CEA/EMA-immunopositiv

Spinal metastasis of submandibular gland adenoid cystic carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor of the salivary glands, with pulmonary metastasis being the most common site of distant metastasis. CASE DESCRIPTION: The author reports an unusual case of intradural adenoid cystic carcinoma metastasis of the lumbar spine in a patient with recent prostate carcinoma suffering from progressive back pain. The primary submandibular tumor was resected 7 years before the appearance of the spine metastasis, and a prostatic carcinoma had been detected 1 year before. The patient died of systemically advanced disease a few months after sur

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma with regional lymph node metastasis.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is a particularly rare variant of sweat gland carcinoma with characteristics of indolent and progressive course and high incidence of perineural invasion and local recurrence. However, regional lymph node metastasis in PCACC is exceedingly rare and its prognostic implication is unknown. Only two previous cases of recurrent scalp PCACC were reported to be associated with cervical lymph node metastases at 42 months and 20 years, respectively, after the initial treatment. We present a case of PCACC occurring in the left parotid region with region

[Factors influencing survival rate in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands].

OBJECTIVE: To study factors influencing survival rate of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary glands. METHODS: One hundred and twelve cases were followed up for move than ten years and were studied to investigate factors influencing the survival rate of patients. Statistical analysis was performed using a computer program (Survcalc, John Wiley Co.). The data were statistically treated for survival curves according to the kaplan-meier method. The log rank tests were employed to assess the statistical significance of various groups. RESULTS: The age of the patients younger than 50 ye

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma metastatic to cervical lymph nodes.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) occurs not only as a neoplasm of salivary glands but also in the skin. Metastasis is rare, and metastasis to lymph nodes has not been reported in the English literature. Case Report A patient with a history of excisions of "cylindroma" of the scalp over the past 20 years was initially seen with 2 recurrent scalp nodules and a firm left neck mass. Both scalp lesions and multiple neck nodes were found to be ACC at resection. The patient underwent postoperative radiation therapy and is clinically free of disease at 4 years. CONCLUSIONS: We believe this

Age-specific size of the normal adenoid pad on magnetic resonance imaging.

Conclusions regarding the significance and appearance of the adenoids incidentally noted on magnetic resonance (MR) scans of the brain largely rely on observations of previously published plain film data. In order to determine the age specific appearance of normal adenoid tissue as measured on sagittal T1-weighted midline MR images, we evaluated 189 patients without a history or clinical evidence of adenoid disease, who were sequentially referred for an MR scan of the brain. The thickness of the adenoid pad was measured to the nearest 1 mm along a line through the pharyngeal tubercle construct…

A potential role for arginase in recurrent infections and hypertrophy of tonsillar and adenoidal tissue.

Since arginase has been found to be an arginine-depleting and nitric oxide synthase-regulating enzyme, the present study was devised to examine hypertrophied and infected tonsil and adenoid arginase activity in relation to a metabolic arginase-nitric oxide pathway and its association with disease processes. Tissues were taken from 32 children undergoing adenotonsillectomy. There was a statistically significant difference between the two tissue enzyme activities, with tonsillar arginase activity being higher than the corresponding adenoidal tissue (P < 0.005). This suggests a potential role for

Palatal adenoid cystic carcinoma presenting as perineural spread to the cavernous sinus.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the hard or soft palate is a slow-growing, insidious disease with a tendency to spread via a perineural mechanism along the palatine branches of the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve. Such spread may present first as a tumor in the pterygopalatine fossa or cavernous sinus. The purpose of this manuscript is to report three cases of palatal adenoid cystic carcinoma which presented as a mass in the cavernous sinus prior to discovery of the palate primary tumor. The imaging features of these cases are emphasized as is the need to search for a head and neck prim

Factors influencing survival rate in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands.

Ninety-one cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary glands with more than ten years' follow up were studied to investigate factors influencing the survival rate of patients, which vary according to site, histological type, clinical stage and nature of therapy. The data were statistically analysed for survival curves. Log rank tests were employed to assess the statistical significance of various groups. As a result, it may be concluded that tumour site, clinical stage and histological type are the important factors influencing the prognosis. ACC of the palate and parotid, early c

Intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma mimicking meningioma: report of two cases.

Two cases of intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma mimicking meningioma are reported. In one, MRI showed not only a homogeneously enhancing extra-axial tumour attached to the dura mater of the posterior cranial fossa, but also surrounding dural enhancement, the "dural tail sign". In the second, CT demonstrated a well-demarcated enhancing extra-axial tumour, indistinguishable from a sphenoid ridge meningioma extending into the orbit. The neuroradiological features of intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma may thus closely resemble those of meningioma.

Reflections on the management of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses has a unique natural history. It has a propensity for frequent local recurrence and early perineural and hematogenous spread. These factors, together with a complex anatomic situation, make adequate oncologic surgery extremely difficult. The incidence of local recurrence is lower in those patients receiving more radical primary surgery, but the choice between conservative and radical management may not alter prognosis. Indeed, it is doubtful if any patients are cured of this disease.

Tyrosine-rich crystalloids in adenoid cystic carcinoma: histochemical and ultrastructural observations.

Tyrosine-rich crystalloids are described in an example of an adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in an oral minor salivary gland of the hard palate. This represents the first reported case of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of oral minor salivary gland in which tyrosine-rich deposits have been identified. The tyrosine deposits appear refractile but not birefringent at the light microscopic level; and histochemical findings indicate a relatively simple, homogeneous chemical composition rich in tyrosine. Their ultrastructural nature is that of a finely granular, but otherwise patternless, highly electr

Ectopic ACTH syndrome due to salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma.

A 68-year-old woman developed Cushing syndrome associated with a submaxillary salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma. High levels of immunoreactive adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) were found in the tumor and peripheral blood. Urinary 17-hydroxycorticosteroid levels decreased following administration of dexamethasone, suggesting possible suppression of ectopic ACTH production. however, there was no specific in vitro binding of dexamethasone by tumor cytosol. A trial of metyrapone therapy resulted in control of hypokalemia and hyperglycemia. Both plasma cortisol and 11-deoxycortisol levels
