Impact of maternal age on delivery outcomes following spontaneous labour at term.

AIM: Pregnancy in women of advancing maternal age is linked to incrementally worsening perinatal outcome. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of maternal age on delivery outcome in women that spontaneously labour at term. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of women that spontaneously labour at term. Women with singletons in spontaneous onset labour beyond 37 weeks of gestation were divided into five maternal age groups: <19 years, 20-24 years, 25-29 years, 30-34 years and >35 years by their age at delivery. The main outcome variables are augmentation of labour, caesarean sectio

Semen parameters' mediation effect on the association between advanced paternal age and IVF clinical outcomes: A 10-year retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mediation between advanced paternal age and the outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in a female-adjusted cohort. METHODS: The study retrospectively included couples undergoing IVF cycles between 2011 and 2020, and whose female partner was free of medical conditions that would significantly worsen clinical outcomes. Data on patient medical conditions, clinical data, and follow-up information were collected. Causal mediation effect analysis adopting both linear/logistic regression and mixed-effects models was carried out to evaluate the effect of paternal age on t

Association of Maternal Cardiac Arrhythmias with Pregnancy Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: The prevalence of maternal arrhythmias is increasing with advanced maternal age. Current evidence regarding the association between maternal arrhythmias and pregnancy outcomes remains inconsistent. This meta-analysis aimed to define the associations between adverse pregnancy outcomes and specific maternal arrhythmias. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis using the PRISMA guidelines. We searched MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane on the 4th of November 2025 for cohort and case-control studies comparing pregnant women with cardiac arrhythmias to those without. Pri…

Age-specific effects on adverse pregnancy outcomes vary by maternal characteristics: a population-based retrospective study in Xiamen, China.

BACKGROUND: Advanced maternal age (AMA; ≥35 years) is considered to be a major risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Along with the global trend of delayed childbearing, and in particular, the implementation of China's second and third-child policy leading to a dramatic increase of AMA in recent years, the association between maternal age and pregnancy outcomes requires more investigation. METHODS: A population-based retrospective study was performed. Data were derived from the Medical Birth Registry of Xiamen from 2011 to 2018. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used t…

Diverticulitis in Pregnancy Is Associated with High Complication Rates.

BACKGROUND: National trends toward earlier onset of diverticulitis combined with more advanced maternal age may converge, making diverticulitis an increasingly important etiology of obstetric abdominal infection. However, there is little data on this topic, and no specific guidelines on how to treat pregnant patients with the disease. The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of hospitalization for diverticulitis in pregnant patients and the common complications associated with this disease process. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the National Readmissio…

Association of maternal age with adverse pregnancy outcomes: A prospective multicenter cohort study in China.

BACKGROUND: Although maternal age might affect pregnancy outcomes, it remains unclear whether this relationship is linear or curvilinear and if it differs between nulliparous and multiparous women. We aimed to characterize the relationship between maternal age and risks of pregnancy outcomes in a diverse sample of Chinese singleton pregnant women and to evaluate whether the relationship varied by parity. METHODS: We based this prospective multicenter cohort study on data from 18 495 singleton pregnant women who participated in the University Hospital Advanced Age Pregnant Cohort Study, conduc

Predicting Risk for Patent Ductus Arteriosus in the Neonate: A Machine Learning Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is common in newborns, being associated with high morbidity and mortality. While maternal and neonatal conditions are known contributors, few studies use advanced machine learning (ML) as predictive factors. This study assessed how maternal pathologies, medications, and neonatal factors affect the risk of PDA using traditional statistics and ML algorithms: Random Forest (RF) and XGBoost (XGB). Materials and Methods: A retrospective 3-year cohort study of 201 NICU neonates assessed maternal and neonatal factors. Logistic regression (LR)

Prenatal diagnosis and normal outcome of a 46,XX/46,XY chimera: a case report.

The phenotypic spectrum of 46,XX/46,XY chimeric patients is variable. It ranges from normal male or female genitalia to different degrees of ambiguous genitalia. Chimerism results from the amalgamation of two different zygotes in a single embryo, whereas mosaicism results from a mitotic error in a single zygote. Several other mechanisms resulting in a chimera have been discussed in the literature. Here, we report on a new case of chimerism (46,XX/46,XY) diagnosed at 17 weeks' gestation on amniocentesis performed because of advanced maternal age. Ultrasound examination revealed normal female ex…

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of gestational diabetes has increased in parallel with risk factors such as obesity, a family history of diabetes, and advanced maternal age. Studies suggest that gestational diabetes may negatively affect breastfeeding outcomes. This systematic review aimed to investigate the relationship between gestational diabetes and breastfeeding, as well as the contributing factors influencing breastfeeding among affected women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Articles published up to January 2023, with an update through 2025, were included. A comprehensive search was conducted across…

Polyploidies in abortion material decrease with maternal age.

Among 639 spontaneous abortions between the 8th and 14th week of gestation 342 (53.5%) revealed an abnormal karyotype. While the rate of trisomies distinctly increased with advancing maternal age, a decrease in the rate of 45,X conceptuses and polyploidies was observed among abortions from older women. The overall relation of XXXX:XXYY among the tetraploidies was 14:11 and that of XXX:XXY:XYY among the triploidies was 26:36:1. However, when the latter was related to maternal age, a reversal of the XXX:XXY ratio of 1:2 in the younger to 2:1 in the older age groups became evident. Furthermore a

Predictors of vaginal bleeding during the first two trimesters of pregnancy.

This study evaluates maternal age, race, cigarette smoking, prior spontaneous abortion, prior induced abortion, and prior preterm birth in relation to vaginal bleeding during the first two trimesters of pregnancy. Information on vaginal bleeding and predictors came from the Pregnancy, Infection, and Nutrition Study, which enrolled 2806 pregnant women at 24-29 weeks' gestation during 1995-2000 in central North Carolina, USA. Generalised estimating equations were applied to take into account repeated episodes of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Women with advanced maternal age and passive smok…

Understanding the risks and complications unique to teen and AMA women with pregestational DM is imperative to providing care and improving outcomes.Objective:. BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases adverse neonatal and maternal outcomes. Understanding the prevalence and risk fact … s of GDM. CONCLUSIONS: More than one-fourth of pregnant women in Thai Binh, Vietnam, may have GDM. Advanced maternal age, high pregestational body mass index, family history of diabetes, and previous GDM were associated with increased risk of GDM.
