Annular rupioid secondary syphilis confined to the face.

OBJECTIVES: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by treponema pallidum. Its rash usually affects the trunk and limbs extensively, including the palms and soles of the feet. Secondary syphilis confined to the face is extremely rare. METHODS: We report a case of annular rupioid secondary syphilis, which was misdiagnosed as verruca vulgaris. RESULTS: The patient's lesions were confined to the face and resembled oyster shells. Her serological tests results were positive for treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay (TPPA) and rapid plasma reagin (RPR) (1:64). CONCLUSI

Diagnosis of Canine Leptospirosis.

Several diagnostic tests are available to aid veterinarians in diagnosis of leptospirosis. Understanding the course of infection is imperative to determining which diagnostic test to order and sample to submit. Diagnostic tests for dogs suspected of having leptospirosis include antibody-based tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Paired acute and convalescent microscopic agglutination test (MAT) are diagnostic for leptospirosis. PCR performed on blood and/or urine can be a valuable tool to aid in diagnosis of leptospirosis. Commercially available rapid point-of-care diagnostics have been

Brucellosis.

Brucellosis is a common Zoonosis affecting half a million people annually. The most common mode of infection is by consuming unpasteurized milk or milk products. The general manifestations are those of fever with generalized symptoms. The nervous system is affected in 4-7% of cases. The manifestations are protean and include meningo-encephalitis as well as peripheral nervous system involvement. The diagnosis relies on culture, which is cumbersome and can be falsely negative. Agglutination tests for the various species of the organism are the mainstay for diagnosis. Treatment is for 3-6 months …

Pneumonic presentation of brucellosis.

Brucellosis is a rare disease in children. Lung involvement is an uncommon presentation of brucellosis. The authors are presenting a child with brucellosis, who presented with predominant pulmonary involvement. It was an eight-year-old child who was referred to us a case of non-resolving pneumonia. Brucella agglutination test was suggestive of brucellosis. He responded to the combination of doxycycline and rifampicin.

Counterimmunoelectrophoresis in the diagnosis of human leptospirosis.

Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) was applied on sera from patients with leptospirosis caused by leptospires from different serogroups and on sera from a control group. The CIE using an antigen prepared from a single leptospira strain agreed with the microscopic agglutination test using a battery of different antigens in 91% of the leptospirosis sera. CIE was sensitive and specific, comparatively easy to perform, used little amounts of serum and antigen, gave rapid results and allowed the examination of large numbers of specimens at a time.

How to recognize and resolve reagent-dependent reactivity: a review.

Reagent-dependent reactivity can be described as agglutination of red blood cells (RBCs) in serologic testing that is not related to the interaction of RBC antigens and antibodies that the test system is intended to detect. In other words, reagent-dependent reactivity results in false-positive agglutination reactions in serologic testing. These false-positive reactions can cause confusion in antigen typing and RBC antibody detection and identification procedures, and may result in delays in patient transfusion. It is imperative that reagent-dependent reactivity is recognized and resolved durin

Serogrouping of non-interpretable Neisseria meningitidis carriage strains, using rapid diagnostic tests.

Large-scale Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) carriage studies in Africa are hampered by the lack of easy-to-perform and reliable methods for serogrouping strains that are largely polyagglutinable or autoagglutinable isolates using the conventional agglutination method. We tested the recently developed duplex rapid diagnostic tests (RDT1 Nm A and Y/W135, RDT2 Nm C and Y) for the serogrouping of 55 non-interpretable carriage strains. Thirteen (23.6%) could be serogrouped, of which nine were serogroup W135. Rapid diagnostic tests are a useful and efficient tool for the identification and serogrouping
