This naturalistic European multicenter study aimed to elucidate the association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and comorbid anxiety disorders. Demographic and clinical information of 1346 MDD patients were compared between those with and without concurrent anxiety disorders. The association between explanatory variables and the presence of comorbid anxiety disorders was examined using binary logistic regression analyses. 286 (21.2%) of the participants exhibited comorbid anxiety disorders, 10.8% generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), 8.3% panic disorder, 8.1% agoraphobia, and 3.3% social…

Panic disorder patients with agoraphobia (n = 32) and agoraphobic patients without panic disorder (n = 18) who were participants in an inpatient behavioral-psychodynamic treatment program were assessed repeatedly from pretreatment to 2-year posttreatment follow-up. At pretreatment, there were statistical trends for more of the panic with agoraphobia patients to have obsessive-compulsive disorder and alcohol abuse/dependence, and for more of the agoraphobia without panic patients to have generalized anxiety disorder and avoidant personality disorder. There was also a trend for more of the panic…

Patients attending an inpatient phobia treatment program were diagnosed for DSM-III-R Axis I and II disorders, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Disorders, and completed a set of self-report instruments. They were divided into 3 groups: (a) those who met the criteria for panic disorder with agoraphobia (n = 57), (b) those who met the criteria for agoraphobia without a history of panic disorder (n = 21), and (c) those who met criteria for other anxiety disorders, but not for panic/agoraphobia (n = 14). On Axis I, more of the panic with agoraphobia than of the agoraphobia wit…

This paper reviews anxiety, panic, and phobic disorders as they were described in landmark works, along with more recent epidemiologic studies of the disorders. The author discusses clinical syndromes of anxiety as outlined in the DSM-III: agoraphobia, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, simple phobic states, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, relating them to Phobic Anxiety-Depersonalization Syndrome and to earlier descriptions by Westphal and Benedict. The paper addresses the problem of delineating anxiety and phobic states from depressive disorders, with regard to d…

Agoraphobia is related to demographic characteristics and social roles. To unravel behavioral aspects from demographic characteristics, daily life situations were registered with the Experience Sampling Method for 65 panic patients with and without agoraphobia. Surprisingly, panic patients with and without agoraphobia did not differ as hypothesized in reported frequencies of visits to public places. Panic subjects with agoraphobia did, however, spend significantly more time at home and with their families than did panic patients without agoraphobia and normal controls. When adjusted for demogr…

In Japan, the impact of DSM-5 has been greater than we had imagined. The Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology organized a group for … ures of excessive fear and anxiety and related behavioral disturbances. Thirdly, panic disorder and agoraphobia are not associated in DSM-5. Thus, the former DSM-IV diagnoses of panic disorder with agoraphobia, panic disorder without agoraphobia, and agoraphobia without a history of panic disorder are now replaced by two diagnoses, panic disorder and agorapho …

The Anxiety Symptoms Interview (ASI) is a diagnostic instrument designed to identify agoraphobia (with and without panic attacks), panic disorder, social phobia, and obsessive compulsive disorder according to DSM-III criteria. The present study evaluated the diagnostic validity of this instrument by examining the extent to which ASI diagnoses assigned to 73 clinic patients agreed with diagnoses determined by clinicians. Most kappa coefficients and other concordance indicators were in the acceptable range or above, a finding that held for diagnoses overall and for specific diagnoses of agorapho…

In a population based sample of 2163 personally interviewed female twins, substantial comorbidity was observed between DSM-III-R defined major depression (MD) and 4 subtypes of phobia: agoraphobia, social phobia, animal phobia and situational phobia. However, the level of comorbidity of MD with agoraphobia was much greater than that found with the other phobic subtypes. We concluded bivariate twin analyses to decompose the genetic and environmental sources of comorbidity between MD and the phobias. Our results suggest that a modest proportion of the genetic vulnerability to MD also influences …

Recently, it has been suggested that situational specific phobias (e.g., phobias of driving, flying, enclosed places) are more closely related to agoraphobia than are other specific phobia types. The present study investigated this hypothesis by examining heterogeneity among the four main DSM-IV specific phobia types, particularly with respect to variables believed to be associated with agoraphobia. Using interviews and behavioral testing, 60 patients with specific phobias of animals, heights, blood/injections, or driving were compared with respect to etiology, age of onset, physiological resp…

Panic attacks are psychopathological phenomena with a strong emotional activation that often induces subsequent anticipatory anxiety and phobic avoidance. Impairment in emotional processing in patients with Panic Disorder (PD) has been hypothesized. Emotional Intelligence (EI) involves the individual abilities to perceive, understand and manage emotions in order to cope with changes in internal and external environment. We examined EI in 42 patients with PD with Agoraphobia compared to 49 healthy controls and investigated if clinical severity of Agoraphobia is related to EI performance. We ass…

Individuals with agoraphobia exhibit impaired exploratory activity when navigating unfamiliar environments. However, no studies have investigated the contribution of visuospatial working memory (VSWM) in these individuals' ability to acquire and process spatial information while considering the use of egocentric and allocentric coordinates or environments with or without people. A total of 106 individuals (53 with agoraphobia and 53 controls) navigated in a virtual square to acquire spatial information that included the recognition of landmarks and the relationship between landmarks and themse…

BACKGROUND: Over 390,000 people in the UK are disfigured. Facial disfigurement distresses sufferers markedly but has been studied little.
AIMS: To compare fearful avoidance of people with a facial disfigurement with that of a group of patients with phobia.
METHOD: Comparison of Fear Questionnaire agoraphobia, social phobia and anxiety depression sub-scale scores of 112 facially disfigured people (who scored high on Fear Questionnaire problem severity in three survey studies) with those of 66 out-patients with agoraphobia and 68 out-patients with social phobia.
RESULTS: Facially disfigured p…

The fear questionnaire (Marks and Mathews) is presented in an original french translation. The questionnaire's validity, sensibility and reliability are studied in four groups: agoraphobia with panic attacks, obsession-compulsion, social phobia and control. The scale has a good empirical validity especially for agoraphobia measurement. However in our study the boundaries between obsession compulsion and social phobia appear questionable. Principal components analysis yields four factors similar to those found by Marks and Mathews: agoraphobia, blood and injury phobia, social phobia, and anxiet…

The diagnosis of panic disorder without agoraphobia can very often be quite difficult because of the similarity with physical disorders particularly in the cardiac, gastrointestinal or neurological systems. The distinction must be made between panic attacks appearing as medical problems and medical problems appearing as panic attacks. Sometimes the diagnosis of panic attacks is made only after the medical diagnoses have been excluded. Panic disorder with agoraphobia however is much easier to detect if one carefully traces the historical development of agoraphobia and carefully distinguishes be…

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationships among certain subtypes of panic attacks (full vs. limited symptom; spontaneous vs. situational) and between these subtypes, panic disorder subtypes, and other characteristics of panic disorder, especially agoraphobia.
METHOD: Data were drawn from a large (n = 1,168) treatment study of panic disorder in which panic attacks were carefully subtyped and counted using a diary. Relationships between variables at baseline were examined primarily using non-parametric methods, and the course of improvement for panic subtypes among completers was plotted.
