Association of Alcohol Drinking Patterns With Presence of Impaired Fasting Glucose and Diabetes Mellitus Among South Korean Adults.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the association between alcohol drinking patterns and the presence of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: We used data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2010-2014. The participants were aged ≥30 years and had no previous diagnosis of DM. High-risk drinking was defined as alcohol consumption of ≥7 glasses at a sitting for men, and ≥5 glasses for women. After adjusting for confounding factors, a polychotomous logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association of drinking pattern…

The cost of minority stress: Risky alcohol use and coping-motivated drinking behavior in African American college students.

A motivational drinking framework is utilized to understand the relationship between minority stressors (e.g., race-related stress and acculturative stress) and alcohol use behaviors (risky alcohol use and coping-motivated drinking) among a large sample of Black American college students. Six hundred forty-nine Black college students from 8 colleges and universities in the United States were recruited as part of a large, multiwave, cross-sectional study investigating the stress and coping experiences of Black emerging adults. Results from the current investigation provide support for the indep

Blockade of alcohol escalation and "relapse" drinking by pharmacological FAAH inhibition in male and female C57BL/6J mice.

BACKGROUND: Anandamide (AEA)-dependent signaling is regulated by the catabolic enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). Several lines of evidence have demonstrated that FAAH and AEA are involved in the behavioral effects of alcohol. Therefore, we investigated whether a selective FAAH inhibitor, URB597 (cyclohexylcarbamic acid 3'-[aminocarbonyl]-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-yl ester), altered alcohol intake in mice in a voluntary alcohol drinking model. METHODS: Mice, subjected to 3 weeks of chronic intermittent access (IA) in a two-bottle choice paradigm with 24-h access every other day, developed rapi…

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) response to alcohol pictures predicts subsequent transition to heavy drinking in college students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Young adults show the highest rates of escalating drinking, yet the neural risk mechanisms remain unclear. Heavy drinkers show variant functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response to alcohol cues, which may presage increasing drinking. In this longitudinal study, we ascertained whether BOLD response to alcohol pictures predicted subsequent heavy drinking among college students. METHODS: Participants were 43 18-21-year-olds in the United States who underwent BOLD scanning and completed monthly substance use surveys over the foll

Psychiatric morbidity is linked to problem drinking in midlife among alcohol-dependent men: a co-twin control study.

OBJECTIVE: Prior research on predictors of problem drinking has been limited because of an inability to attribute an unambiguous environmental explanation to observed findings. Using a prospective co-twin control design, we examined the extent to which a history of psychiatric symptoms exerts an environmental influence on problem drinking in midlife that is unconfounded by genetic underpinnings. METHOD: Participants were 367 complete male twin pairs (208 monozygotic, 159 dizygotic) from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry who were assessed in midlife as part of the Family Twin Study (Mage = 51.4 ye

Sexual orientation differences in the relationship between victimization and hazardous drinking among women in the National Alcohol Survey.

This study examined relationships between past experiences of victimization (sexual abuse and physical abuse in childhood, sexual abuse and physical abuse in adulthood, and lifetime victimization) and hazardous drinking among sexual minority women compared to exclusively heterosexual women. Data were from 11,169 women responding to sexual identity and sexual behavior questions from three National Alcohol Survey waves: 2000 (n = 3,880), 2005 (n = 3,464), and 2010 (n = 3,825). A hazardous drinking index was constructed from five dichotomous variables (5+ drinking in the past year, drinking two o

Subjective perceptions associated with the ascending and descending slopes of breath alcohol exposure vary with recent drinking history.

BACKGROUND: The differentiator model predicts that individuals with a positive family history of alcoholism (FHA) or heavy alcohol consumers will feel more sensitive to the effects of alcohol on the ascending phase of the blood alcohol content while feeling less sedated on the descending phase. This study tested whether subjective perceptions are sensitive to the slope of breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) and whether that sensitivity is associated with an FHA and/or recent drinking history (RDH). METHODS: Family-history-positive (FHP, n = 27) and family-history-negative (FHN, n = 27) young

Risk factors of alcohol problem drinking among female bar/hotel workers in Moshi, Tanzania: a multi-level analysis.

There is limited information on alcohol problem drinking, which has been associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, among female bar/hotel workers in Africa. This paper aimed to identify the individual- and facility-level determinants of alcohol problem drinking in this setting. Problem drinking was defined based on the CAGE alcohol screening scale. Multi-level logistic regression was used to identify individual- and facility-level factors associated with problem drinking. About 37.3% of women (N = 1629) were classified as having probable or definite problem drinkin

Liver nuclear and microsomal CYP2E1-mediated metabolism of xenobiotics in rats chronically drinking an alcohol-containing liquid diet.

In previous studies from our laboratory, the presence in highly purified liver nuclei of metabolic pathways for processing ethanol (EtOH), N … hibited less p-nitrophenol hydroxylase activity than microsomes, but it was inducible by repetitive alcohol drinking to equivalent levels of those of microsomes from control animals. Nuclei exhibited the ability to activate CCl4, which was significantly enhanced by alcohol drinking. Aniline was ring hydroxylated in liver microsomes but not in nuclei from either co …

Relationship of binge drinking to alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, and behavioral problems in an American Indian tribe.

The hypothesis that binge drinking is a benign behavior not associated with alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, or problem areas, in American Indians, was tested in a sample of 582 adult Southwestern American Indian males and females in large multigenerational pedigrees. All information was obtained from semistructured psychiatric interviews that were independently blind-rated for DSM-III-R diagnoses. Three main outcome measures were used: the relationship between binge drinking and (1) alcohol dependence and other psychiatric disorders, (2) substance abuse treatment, and (3) four

Alcohol use profile, motivation to quit, and attitude toward drinking in participants of a community alcohol de-addiction camp and a clinical setting: A comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Due to a lack of awareness and inadequate health infrastructure, the treatment gap for any mental illness is increasing in lower- and middle-income countries, including India. As an alternative to institutional treatment, community de-addiction camps play an important role. METHOD: This comparative study examined alcohol use profiles, motivation to quit, and attitudes toward drinking in 84 participants, equally divided between a community alcohol de-addiction camp (n = 42) and a clinical setting (n = 42). Data were collected using a socio-demographic data sheet; alcohol use profil

Sociability, drinking motives, and alcohol use problems among young adults with and without childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Young adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of experiencing alcohol use problems compared to peers without ADHD. Poorer parent-rated social functioning has been associated both positively and negatively with alcohol use among youth with ADHD. However, individuals' self-perceptions of their sociability, or comfort in social situations, could be more specifically linked to risky alcohol outcomes via drinking motives. We tested associations among ADHD, self-reported sociability, social and coping drinking motives, and alcohol use outcomes in

Influence of real-world cue exposure and mood states on drinking: testing neurobiological models of alcohol use disorder.

RATIONALE: Two prominent neurobiological models of addiction, the allostatic and incentive-sensitization models, have guided clinical research on alcohol use disorder (AUD). While these models are often viewed in isolation, it is plausible these theories are complimentary. OBJECTIVES: Use naturalistic, daily diary reports to determine whether positive and negative mood states influence alcohol cue sensitivity in a clinical sample with AUD. METHODS: This is an exploratory analysis of daily diary data collected from a non-treatment seeking sample with current AUD over two weeks. Eligible adult

Alcohol-related health risks, cancer and government drinking guidelines: Views of adults at midlife in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Alcohol consumption increases longer-term health risks, including cancer. Many adults at midlife in Aotearoa New Zealand drink frequently but may not be aware of such risks. This study examined midlife adults' awareness of alcohol and health risks and their knowledge of government low-risk drinking guidelines. A convenience sample of 502 adults (aged 40-65 years; 70% female) completed an online questionnaire. Almost all respondents reported they were aware of health risks associated with alcohol consumption. When unprompted, 41% of the sample named cancer as a health risk; when asked if they k
