A classification of alcoholic polyneuropathy is offered. This classification was developed by the author on the basis of neurological examinations of 354 alcoholics. Combinations of various disturbances of peripheral innervation (within the limits of a polyneuropathy) both between each other and with various cerebral disturbances are described. As a result, the following forms of the alcoholic polyneuropathy are distinguished: vegetative, sensor, mixed, pseudodiabetic, and motor ones, as well as Korsakov's syndrome. Both the cerebral and the peripheral disturbances are transient: on being deve…

Peripheral neuropathy is a common and potentially incapacitating complication of prolonged overuse of alcohol. As a relatively early feature of chronic alcoholism, its early identification is of value in the prevention of other and more dangerous consequences of alcohol abuse. With vigilance, peripheral neuropathy is easily diagnosed before gross incapacity has resulted, but its management entails all the problems encountered in the treatment of chronic alcoholism.

Alcoholic hepatitis is the precursor of cirrhosis. Susceptibility is independent of amount and duration of ethanol intake or of diet. Centrilobular hyalin, the key morphologic abnormality, sensitizes lymphocytes to secrete factors which may account (in part) for necrosis, liver cell destruction, increased collagen synthesis and development of cirrhosis. Diagnosis may be facilitated by detection of alcoholic hyalin antigen (AHAg) and antibody (AHAb) in serum of patients with alcoholic hepatitis. Treatment requires abstinence. Steroids have not reduced mortality rates. Measures to improve immuno
