Tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestations in cattle along Geba River basin in Guinea-Bissau.

Tick infestations are a major problem for animal production in tropical areas where prevention and control remain deficient. The present stu … species collected during the dry season were Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) geigyi (56.5%), followed by Amblyomma variegatum (23.3%), Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus (17.6%) and Hyalomma truncatum (1%). In the rainy season A. variegatum was the most collected (88.9%), followed by R. (Boophilus) geigyi (4.2%), R. (Boophilus) annulatus (3.4%), Rhipicephalus s …

A Coxiella-like endosymbiont is a potential vitamin source for the Lone Star tick.

Amblyomma americanum (Lone star tick) is an important disease vector in the United States. It transmits several human pathogens, including the agents of human monocytic ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and southern tick-associated rash illness. Blood-feeding insects (Class Insecta) depend on bacterial endosymbionts to provide vitamins and cofactors that are scarce in blood. It is unclear how this deficiency is compensated in ticks (Class Arachnida) that feed exclusively on mammalian blood. A bacterium related to Coxiella burnetii, the agent of human Q fever, has been observed previously within cells o…

The relevance of tick bites to the production of IgE antibodies to the mammalian oligosaccharide galactose-α-1,3-galactose.

CONCLUSION: The results presented here provide evidence that tick bites ar …

First culture isolation of Borrelia lonestari, putative agent of southern tick-associated rash illness.

Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI) is a Lyme disease-like infection described in patients in the southeastern and south-central United States, where classic Lyme disease is relatively rare. STARI develops following the bite of a lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) and is thought to be caused by infection with an "uncultivable" spirochete tentatively named Borrelia lonestari. In this study, wild lone star ticks collected from an area where B. lonestari is endemic were cocultured in an established embryonic tick cell line (ISE6). The cultures were examined by dark-field microscopy f…

Ehrlichiae and ehrlichial diseases in china.

The various ticks collected from different areas of China were examined for the existence of ehrlichial agents by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with genus- or species-specific primers designed on the basis of ehrlichial 16S rRNA genes and sequence analyses. In southern China, E. chaffeensis was detected in Amblyomma testudinarium ticks from infested cattle, Haemaphysalis yeni ticks from hare, and Ixodes ovatus ticks from Muntiacus reevesi. E. canis was identified in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks from dogs and Boophilus microplus ticks from goats. A new species of the genus Ehrlichia, closel…

The efficacy of amitraz against cattle ticks in Tanzania.

The efficacy of amitraz on cattle ticks was assessed by susceptibility tests, spraying and dipping trials. Tests on the susceptibility of three tick species, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum and Boophilus decoloratus to amitraz (technical grade-purity 98.6% w/w) showed all 15 tick strains tested to be highly susceptible, with LC50 ranging between 0.001% and 0.03%, and LC99, between 0.01% and 0.07%. Spraying trials were carried out on calves infested with R. appendiculatus, A. variegatum and B. decoloratus. Amitraz wettable powder [as Taktic total replacement (TR)] was tested …

Tick infestations on Zebu cattle in western Kenya: individual host variation.

Monthly collections were made of all ticks from 25 mature East African Zebu cattle and 5 yearlings for 13 mo on Rusinga Island, Lake Victoria, Kenya, from September 1986 to September 1987. The most common species were Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann and Amblyomma variegatum F.; Boophilus decoloratus Koch and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi Neumann also were present in fewer numbers. Cattle were ranked according to their degree of resistance to each of the four species and to each stage in the life cycle of the three-host ticks. Ranking according to infestations of females and nymphs of R. a…

Ixodes philipi (Acari: Ixodidae): phylogenetic status inferred from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene sequence comparison.

Ixodes philipi ticks were collected from the nest burrows of streaked shearwaters, Calonectris luecomelas, on 3 different islands of Japan (Awashima: 38 degrees 45'N, 139 degrees 24'E; Mikurajima: 33 degrees 52'N, 139 degrees 36'E; and Omorijima: 36 degrees 8'N, 133 degrees 10'E). The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequence was determined for each tick. The COI sequences of 9 other ixodid tick species also were determined, and they were used for taxonomic positioning of I. philipi. A metastriata tick, Amblyomma triguttatum, was used as an outgroup reference for the analy…

Local immune responses in tick-bite skin during SFTSV infection are associated with type I interferon signaling and monocyte-lineage cell recruitment.

The skin harbors a complex immune microenvironment that integrates innate and adaptive components and plays a critical role in vector-borne pathogen transmission. To investigate immune responses during tick-mediated transmission of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus (SFTSV), we analyzed skin from BALB/c mice bitten by artificially infected Amblyomma testudinarium nymphs. Skin samples were collected at time points corresponding to peak viral RNA levels (days 6-7 post-attachment) and analyzed by transcriptomics, followed by real-time PCR and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses. Tra…

Sustained multi-year contraceptive efficacy of single-dose GonaCon in synanthropic female capybaras.

Capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) are increasingly synanthropic throughout South America, where their rapid population growth in human-altered landscapes heightens conflicts and, critically, elevates the public health risk of Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF), a lethal Rickettsia rickettsii zoonosis transmitted by Amblyomma sculptum ticks. Since capybara density is tightly coupled with pathogen circulation, non-lethal, scalable management strategies are essential. We evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of the single-dose GonaCon™ immunocontraceptive vaccine in free-living, sexually mat…

A 4-Yr Survey of the Range of Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens in the Lehigh Valley Region of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Questing ticks were surveyed by dragging in forested habitats within the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania for four consecutive summers (2015-2018). A high level of inter-annual variation was found in the density of blacklegged tick nymphs, Ixodes scapularis Say, with a high density of host-seeking nymphs (DON) in summer 2015 and 2017 and a relatively low DON in summer 2016 and 2018. Very few American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis Say) and Ixodes cookei Packard were collected. Lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum L.) and longhorned ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann) were…

Bacterial Profiling Reveals Novel "Ca. Neoehrlichia", Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma Species in Australian Human-Biting Ticks.

In Australia, a conclusive aetiology of Lyme disease-like illness in human patients remains elusive, despite growing numbers of people presenting with symptoms attributed to tick bites. In the present study, we surveyed the microbial communities harboured by human-biting ticks from across Australia to identify bacteria that may contribute to this syndrome. Universal PCR primers were used to amplify the V1-2 hyper-variable region of bacterial 16S rRNA genes in DNA samples from individual Ixodes holocyclus (n = 279), Amblyomma triguttatum (n = 167), Haemaphysalis bancrofti (n = 7), and H. longic…
