Pattern of ocular dominance columns and cytochrome oxidase activity in a macaque monkey with naturally occurring anisometropic amblyopia.

Unilateral eyelid suture, a model for amblyopia induced by congenital cataract, produces shrinkage of the deprived eye's ocular dominance columns in the striate cortex. Loss of geniculocortical projections are thought to account for the poor vision in the amblyopic eye. It is uncertain whether ocular dominance columns become shrunken in other forms of amblyopia. We examined the striate cortex in a pigtailed macaque with natural anisometropia discovered at age 5 months. Amblyopia in the left eye was documented at 1 year by behavioral testing. At age 6 years, the left eye was injected with [3H]p…

[Studies on cerebral visual evoked potentials in the differential diagnosis of macular edema and obscration amblyopia in children with artiphakia].

The cerebral cortex visual evoked potentials (VEP) to chess pattern reversion have been examined in 41 healthy children (41 eyes) and in 25 children (25 eyes) with artiphakia after traumatic cataract extraction, with macular edemas (ME) in 12 of these and obscuration amblyopia (OA) in 13. Comparison of the amplitude-time parameters of the VEP and of treir relationship with the cell size and the chess pattern contrast has shown a characteristic feature of ME, i. e. an increased peak latency (PL) of the first negative deviation (H1 peak) of the VEP to reversion of the chess pattern with 90% cont…

Enriched binocular experience followed by sleep optimally restores binocular visual cortical responses in a mouse model of amblyopia.

Studies of primary visual cortex have furthered our understanding of amblyopia, long-lasting visual impairment caused by imbalanced input from the two eyes during childhood, which is commonly treated by patching the dominant eye. However, the relative impacts of monocular vs. binocular visual experiences on recovery from amblyopia are unclear. Moreover, while sleep promotes visual cortex plasticity following loss of input from one eye, its role in recovering binocular visual function is unknown. Using monocular deprivation in juvenile male mice to model amblyopia, we compared recovery of corti…

Amblyopia treatment of adults with dichoptic training using the virtual reality oculus rift head mounted display: preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard treatments in amblyopia are penalizing therapies, such as patching or blurring vision with atropine that are aimed at forcing the use of the amblyopic eye. However, in the last years, new therapies are being developed and validated, such as dichoptic visual training, aimed at stimulating the amblyopic eye and eliminating the interocular supression. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of dichoptic visual training using a virtual reality head mounted display in a sample of anisometropic amblyopic adults and to evaluate the potential usefulness of this option of treatme…

Grey and white matter changes in children with monocular amblyopia: voxel-based morphometry and diffusion tensor imaging study.

AIMS: To investigate the potential morphological alterations of grey and white matter in monocular amblyopic children using voxel-based morp … occipital area and right precuneus were detected in amblyopic patients. CONCLUSIONS: In monocular amblyopia, cortices related to spatial vision underwent volume loss, which provided neuroanatomical evidence of stereoscopic defects. Additionally, white matter development was also hindered due to visual defects in amblyopes. Growth in the GMVs, WMVs and FA …

Binocular summation and other forms of non-dominant eye contribution in individuals with strabismic amblyopia during habitual viewing.

BACKGROUND: Adults with amblyopia ('lazy eye'), long-standing strabismus (ocular misalignment) or both typically do not experience visual symptoms because the signal from weaker eye is given less weight than the signal from its fellow. Here we examine the contribution of the weaker eye of individuals with strabismus and amblyopia with both eyes open and with the deviating eye in its anomalous motor position. METHODOLOGY/RESULTS: The task consisted of a blue-on-yellow detection task along a horizontal line across the central 50 degrees of the visual field. We compare the results obtained in te…

Can uncompensated higher order aberration profile, or aberropia be responsible for subnormal best corrected vision and pseudo-amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Higher order aberrations (HOA) are components of wavefront distortion which cannot be corrected by conventional spectacle correction. Normally they constitute up to 15% of wavefront distortion in the ocular media. The HOA interact in a nonlinear method and tend to compensate each other in most conditions. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesize that abnormally increased and uncompensated higher order aberration profile in certain cases may limit the amount of best corrected visual acuity to subnormal levels and produce a pseudo-ambylopia like picture. We term this entity as aberropia. EVALUAT

[The autologous ipsilateral rotating penetrating keratoplasty: an early surgical procedure to prevent deep irreversible amblyopia in Peters anomaly].

PURPOSE: It is a challenge to prevent irreversible amblyopia in infants suffering from Peters anomaly. In some cases of centrally located corneal opacifications an optical sector iridectomy can not lead to a clear optical axis. The homologous penetrating keratoplasty as early surgical procedure has shown an extremely poor outcome with a high risk of irreversible graft failure. We report on the autologous ipsilateral rotating penetrating keratoplasty in an eight-week-old infant suffering from Peters anomaly. PATIENTS: An autologous ipsilateral rotating penetrating keratoplasty was performed in…

Integrating Multi-Task Eye Tracking and Interpretable Machine Learning for High-Accuracy Screening of Amblyopia in Pediatric Populations.

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of spatial vision in which abnormal visual experience leads to persistent reductions in acuity and contrast sensitivity, even after optimal optical correction. We introduce a brief, child-friendly battery of task-evoked eye tracking that probes fixation stability, fine pattern processing, and smooth pursuit control across three simple paradigms. Oculomotor traces are transformed into physiologically interpretable markers-fixation dispersion and saccadic strategy, orientation-dependent drift and stability, pursuit gain, and tracking error-and used to train …
