BACKGROUND: Acute amnesia can be caused by medication effect, transient global amnesia, ischemia, metabolic abnormalities, and seizures.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 56-year-old woman developed acute amnesia resembling transient global amnesia (TGA) after aneurysm coiling. She was started on abciximab for possible thromboembolic complications related to coiling. Abciximab was discontinued after she developed chest pain. Her chest pain resolved after discontinuing abciximab. She was subsequently found to have small medial temporal lobe strokes on diffusion weighted MRI.
CONCLUSIONS: Isch

Anterograde amnesia refers to the inability to form new memories. Alcoholic blackout, benzodiazepine-induced amnesia and transient global amnesia are three disorders that result in acute transient memory loss. These disorders may be difficult to recognize, because the memory loss is not usually accompanied by other symptoms of neurologic impairment.

Transient amnesia is one of common clinical phenomenon of epilepsy that are encountered by physicians. The amnestic attacks are often associated with persistent memory disturbances. Epilepsy is common among the elderly, with amnesia as a common symptom and convulsions relatively uncommon. Therefore, amnesia due to epilepsy can easily be misdiagnosed as dementia. The term 'transient epileptic amnesia (TEA)' was introduced in the early 1990s by Kapur, who highlighted that amnestic attacks caused by epilepsy can be similar to those occurring in 'transient global amnesia', but are distinguished by

In this report, we share the case of a 65-year-old male with a remote history of brain concussion who presented to the emergency department for evaluation of transient amnesia that lasted 30 minutes to one hour. He was found to have spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage of the fornix as a cause of his amnesic episode. To date from the creation of this case report (January 2023), spontaneous hemorrhage of the fornix resulting in transient amnesia has not been previously described in the literature. The fornix is an unusual location for spontaneous hemorrhage to occur. The differential diagnosis

A woman experienced three isolated episodes of loss of topographical memory, without overt etiology. A rare form of selective non verbal transient amnesia, similar to the more common transient global amnesia, is postulated.

Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a presumably underdiagnosed syndrome belonging to the group of temporal lobe epilepsies. It can easily be misdiagnosed as transient global amnesia (TGA), transient ischaemic attack, psychogenic amnesia or even dementia. Many patients complain of loss of autobiographical memory and accelerated long-term forgetting. We present a case to emphasize both the importance of diagnosing TEA and the pitfalls between TEA and TGA syndrome.

Transient amnestic syndromes are fascinating clinical entities and there are several subtypes. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterised by sudden onset of anterograde amnesia with repetitive questioning, lasting less than 24 hours. The pathophysiology of TGA involves the medial temporal lobes and hippocampi. Episodes of TGA are thought to involve venous congestion with Valsalva-like activities, vascular or migrainous mechanisms. In contrast, transient epileptic amnesia manifests as brief and frequent episodes of amnesia due to seizure activity in the temporal lobes. Transient memory dis

We report an unusual case of sudden isolated transient amnesia triggered by acute marijuana use. The memory disorder, apart from the long duration, had the characteristics of a transient global amnesia-like episode. Acute marijuana intoxication can affect memory more globally and severely than previously reported.

In a group of 39 consecutive patients attending neurological clinics with transient amnesia patients with transient global amnesia formed the largest group; others suffered from epilepsy, migraine, temporal lobe encephalitis, or psychogenic fugues. In most cases the clinical features suggested the aetiology, but an electroencephalogram recorded as soon after the attack as possible may help in distinguishing amnesia due to temporal lobe epilepsy.

Cerebral blood flow determinations using the Xenon inhalation test in two patients with transient global amnesia showed overall decreases during the attack with a more marked fall in temporal-inferior frontal flow in one case and in temporal flow in the other. In the latter patient the temporal anomaly was reversible after naloxone injection but clinical improvement was lacking. Blood flow determinations in a further patient with transient global amnesia, after 2 mg of ergotamine tartrate plus caffeine, showed a global decline in flow without focal anomaly, with recovery after ten days. In this article, we review the principles of, and provide examples for, the new approach of functional neuropsychology in the field of amnesia. In the permanent amnesic syndrome, positron emission tomography (PET) can provide statistical maps of the brain regions with significantly impaired resting metabolism in comparison with control subjects. These regions include not only Papez's circuit but also the left supramarginal gyrus, which may explain in part the retrograde amnesia present in most cases of amnesic syndrome. This approach is also of great interest in transient global amnesia (TGA)

Amnesia characterized by a severe impairment of the memory without a loss of consciousness is one of the 'classical' organic brain syndromes. According to the course, further symptoms and the circumstances of appearance, several subtypes can be differentiated: transient global amnesia, posttraumatic amnesia, Korsakow's psychosis, and psychogenic amnesia. Many disorders may cause amnesia. Guidelines for the differentiation of the underlying disorders and therapeutic strategies are discussed.

Amnesia is a common clinical problem characterized by four features: (1) normal immediate recall, (2) impaired ability to learn, (3) relatively spared ability to retrieve previously learned material, and (4) preserved cognitive and personality characteristics. Amnesia occurs as a distinct mental disorder, and nine variations seen clinically are described here: Korsakoff's psychosis, posttraumatic amnesia, amnesia stroke, postoperative amnesia, postinfectious amnesia, anoxic amnesia, transient global amnesia following ECT, and psychogenic amnesia. The clinical findings which characterize and di…

Ten healthy middle aged or elderly women experienced isolated episodes of topographical amnesia without an obvious aetiology. It is likely a benign cognitive disorder, similar to transient global amnesia.

A typical episode of transient global amnesia has been observed in 111 personal cases. In these elderly patients a sudden disturbance of memory, which may last several hours, makes it impossible for them to store fresh information. During this period there is also retrograde amnesia which covers a period of several weeks or months prior to onset of the acute episode. The disturbance ends suddenly and the retrograde amnesia gap fills up again. The age distribution, vascular risk factors and triggering mechanisms in these personal cases are described. 22 of 111 patients had 1 or more relapses, i

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We aimed to describe the frequency and characteristics of acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attacks presenting predominantly with amnesia (ischemic amnesia) and to identify clinical clues for differentiating them from transient global amnesia (TGA).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed and described all patients presenting with diffusion-weighted imaging magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed acute ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attacks with antero- and retrograde amnesia as the main symptom over a 13.5-year period. We also compared their clinical features

Benzodiazepine derivates can cause transient global amnesia even when administered in therapeutical doses. As amnesia seems to be more frequent than supposed, it is relevant for traffic medicine. We shall discuss forensic cases in which Midazolam amnesia was suspected with special attention to the interpretation of toxicological data.

A variety of transient focal neurological signs presenting at high altitude have been described without associated acute mountain sickness or other concurrent illness. We report a case series of transient global amnesia at high altitude. The term high-altitude global amnesia (HAGA) is introduced to indicate this condition, and the pathophysiology is discussed. We hypothesize that because of the highly variable ventilatory response to hypoxia and to individual cerebral vasomotor reactivity, individuals with a marked hyperventilatory response could experience significant hypocapnic cerebral vaso
