Hookworms are widespread zoonotic parasites affecting humans and companion animals worldwide. We report molecular characterization of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and A. braziliense in a cat imported into Romania from Guadeloupe, an overseas administrative region of the French Republic in the Caribbean. This finding underscores the role of molecular diagnostics in detecting the transboundary introduction of exotic hookworms with significant zoonotic potential.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm is a widely known soil-transmitted helminth (STH) traditionally linked to iron-deficiency anemia caused by chronic blood loss in the small intestine. The classical human pathogens are Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. However, emerging evidence indicates that Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a hookworm of cats and dogs, is a significant cause of human infection, particularly in Southeast Asia and other tropical regions. Its detection in human populations signals an evolving epidemiological landscape, challenging the previous notion that zoonotic hookworms have a negligi

Zoonotic human infections with Ancylostoma ceylanicum have recently been reported in the Americas. We used archived human stool samples to study the geographic distribution of human infections with A. ceylanicum and anthropophilic hookworms in different geoclimatic regions (coastal, Andean, and Amazon) of Ecuador. We analyzed retrospectively archived human stool samples from five studies previously screened for hookworm infection by microscopy, of which four included hookworm-positive samples only and one involved hookworm-negative samples to increase geographic distribution of sampling. Stool

BACKGROUND: Hundreds of millions of people in poor countries continue to suffer from disease caused by bloodfeeding hookworms. While mice and rats are not reliably permissive hosts for any human hookworm species, adult Golden Syrian hamsters are fully permissive for the human and animal pathogen Ancylostoma ceylanicum. Similar to humans, hamsters may be infected with A. ceylanicum third-stage larvae orally or percutaneously. Oral infection typically leads to consistent worm yields in hamsters but may not accurately reflect the clinical and immunological manifestations of human infection result

Ancylostoma ceylanicum is recognized as the only zoonotic hookworm species that is able to mature into adult stage in the human intestine. While human infections caused by this hookworm species have been reported from neighboring countries and this hookworm is prevalent in dogs in Vietnam, human infection has never been reported in Vietnam. The present study, therefore, aimed to identify human infections with A. ceylanicum in Vietnam. A total of 526 fecal samples from the residents in Long An Province were collected and the presence of hookworm eggs was detected by the Kato-Katz method. The re

Viability and in vitro and in vivo activities of freeze-dried conidia of the predatory fungus Arthrobotrys robusta (I-31) were evaluated against infective larvae (L(3)) of Ancylostoma spp. in dogs. A. robusta conidia were lyophilized and stored at 4°C for a month. Freeze-dried conidia were diluted to 1×10(3)conidia/ml and tested in vivo. The treated group consisted of a solution containing conidia (1ml) and 1000 Ancylostoma spp. (L(3)) placed on Petri dishes plated with 2% water-agar (2% WA), at 25°C, in the dark for 10 days. The control group consisted of 1000 Ancylostoma spp. L(3), plated on

The interaction between the nematode-trapping fungus Duddingtonia flagrans (isolate CG768) against Ancylostoma spp. dog infective larvae (L(3)) was evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy. Adhesive network trap formation was observed 6h after the beginning of the interaction, and the capture of Ancylostoma spp. L(3) was observed 8h after the inoculation these larvae on the cellulose membranes colonized by the fungus. Scanning electron micrographs were taken at 0, 12, 24, 36 and 48 h, where 0 is the time when Ancylostoma spp. L(3) was first captured by the fungus. Details of the capt

OBJECTIVE: To determine the length of protection by murine immunization with living third-stage hookworm larvae (L3) as measured by reduction in worm burden and host serologic antibody responses.
METHODS: Outbred male (Kunming strain) mice were immunized subcutaneously with 500 L3 once every 2 weeks for a total of immunization for 3 times, and then challenged orally with 1000 L3 for 1 to 8 weeks after the final immunization. Host protective immunity was determined both by the reduction in worm burden as measured by the number of L3 recovered from murine lungs 48-hour post-challenge, as well a

Correlation between the degree of protection and induced serum antibody response in hamsters immunized with somatic and excretory-secretory (ES) antigens of adult. A. ceylanicum was investigated. Hamsters were immunized with non purified and Sephadex G-200 fractions (F1, F2 and F3) of somatic and ES antigens. The degree of protection was assessed in terms of percent worm reduction compared to controls against challenge infection. Induced humoral antibody response was determined by ELISA. Both somatic and ES antigens had shown moderate to significant protection but the latter was found more imm
