A C-type lectin-like protein (CTL), originally identified as VP12 and lately named Vixapatin, was isolated and characterized from Israeli viper Vipera xantina palestinae snake venom. This CTL was characterized as a selective α2β1 integrin inhibitor with anti-melanoma metastatic activity. METHODS: Recombinant VS was expressed and purified. The effects of VS on the proliferation of endothelial cells were investigated using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay in the absence or presence of angiogenic factors such as basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
