Pseudo-spin rotation symmetry breaking by Coulomb interaction terms in spin-orbit coupled systems.

By transforming from the pure-spin-orbital (t 2g) basis to the spin-orbital entangled pseudo-spin-orbital basis, the pseudo-spin rotation symmetry of the different Coulomb interaction terms is investigated under SU(2) transformation in pseudo-spin space. While the Hubbard and density interaction terms are invariant, the Hund's coupling and pair-hopping interaction terms explicitly break pseudo-spin rotation symmetry systematically. The form of the symmetry-breaking terms obtained from the transformation of the Coulomb interaction terms accounts for the easy x-y plane anisotropy and magnon gap …

Atomic engineering of intrinsic permanent magnetism in MnBi.

The low-temperature phase MnBi has been a focus of rare-earth free permanent magnet research because of its atypical behavior of magnetic anisotropy and coercivity enhancements at an elevated temperature. Using systematic density functional theory, density functional perturbation theory, and Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the structural stability and intrinsic magnetic properties of MnBi with metal and metalloid substitute elements. We theoretically demonstrate that the low magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the MnBi plane can reorient to a large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy (…

Band inversion and switchable magnetic properties of two-dimensional RuClF/WSe2 van der Waals heterostructures.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have potential applications in new low-dimensional spintronic devices owing to their unique electronic properties and magnetic anisotropy energies (MAEs). The electronic structures and magnetic properties of RuClF/WSe2 heterostructure are calculated using first-principles calculations. The most stable RuClF/WSe2 heterostructure is selected for property analysis. RuClF/WSe2 heterostructure has half-metallicity. Considering spin-orbit coupling (SOC), band inversion is present in the RuClF/WSe2 heterostructure, which is also demonstrated b…

Computational Discovery of High-Temperature Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Monolayer H-MnN2.

In the past few years, two-dimensional (2D) high-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) materials with novelty and excellent properties have attracted much attention due to their potential in spintronics applications. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we predict that the H-MnN2 monolayer with the H-MoS2-type structure is a stable intrinsic FMS with an indirect band gap of 0.79 eV and a high Curie temperature (Tc) of 380 K. The monolayer also has a considerable in-plane magnetic anisotropy energy (IMAE) of 1005.70 μeV/atom, including a magnetic shape anisotropy energy in…

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Analysis of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Debate exists over the extent to which dysfunctions arising from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are distinct from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: This study investigated 1) the white matter integrity of participants with either mTBI or PTSD, and 2) the relationship between white matter integrity and postconcussive syndrome. The sample comprised 110 civilians (mTBI group = 40; PTSD group = 32; age- and sex-matched trauma-exposed control subjects = 38) recruited from community advertising. Indicators of white matter abnormalities were fractional anisotropy, mean d…

Cognitive activity, cognitive function, and brain diffusion characteristics in old age.

The objective of this work was to test the hypotheses that a) more frequent cognitive activity in late life is associated with higher brain diffusion anisotropy and lower trace of the diffusion tensor, and b) brain diffusion characteristics partially mediate the association of late life cognitive activity with cognition. As part of a longitudinal cohort study, 379 older people without dementia rated their frequency of participation in cognitive activities, completed a battery of cognitive function tests, and underwent diffusion tensor imaging. We used tract-based spatial statistics to test the…

Anisotropic permeability tensor prediction from porous media microstructure: A physics-informed MaxViT CNN-Transformer framework.

Accurate permeability tensor prediction from pore-scale microstructure is essential for subsurface flow modeling, yet direct numerical simulation requires hours per sample, fundamentally constraining large-scale uncertainty quantification. The proposed physics-informed deep learning framework resolves this computational bottleneck through three integrated contributions. First, a MaxViT hybrid CNN-Transformer leverages multi-axis attention to simultaneously resolve grain-scale geometry via block-local operations and representative elementary volume connectivity through grid-global operations, s

Doppler OCT verifies pulsation-induced anisotropic vessel lumen dynamics in the human retina.

This study verifies anisotropic vessel pulsatility in human retinas. Doppler optical coherence tomography (OCT) was utilized for dynamic monitoring of peripapillary vessel lumen dynamics. Quantitative analysis consistently revealed larger axial compared to lateral lumen changes, with an axial-to-lateral pulsation change ratio of 1.26 ± 0.08. These findings highlight the anisotropic biomechanical properties of retinal tissues, which contribute to direction-dependent vascular dynamics. Quantitative assessment of anisotropic vascular biomechanics offers promising insights for improving the detect

Polarization-Interference Jones Matrix Sensors of Layer-by-Layer Scanning of Polycrystalline Dehydrated Blood Films. Fundamental and Applied Aspects.

To date, visual analysis is mainly used to evaluate images of dehydrated films (facies) of biological fluids-microscopy at various magnifications, illumination with white or polarized light, as well as using a dark field. At the same time, important information on the architectonics of optically anisotropic supramolecular networks of facies is unknown (inaccessible). In our work, a model of optical anisotropy of the architectonics of supramolecular networks of blood facies is proposed. Algorithms and a methodology for a new multifunctional method of polarization-interference visualization of t…

Anisotropic swelling due to hydration constrains anisotropic elasticity in biomaterial fibers.

Naturally occurring protein fibers often undergo anisotropic swelling when hydrated. Within a tendon, a hydrated collagen fibril's radius ex … n that the elastic energy of swelling can be minimized by the anisotropic shape, we relate swelling anisotropy to elastic anisotropy - assuming radial (transverse) symmetry within a cylindrical geometry. We find an upper bound for the commonly measured axial Poisson ratio νzx<1/2. This is significantly below recently estimated values for collagen fibrils ext …

Anisotropic minimum dissipation subgrid-scale model in hybrid aeroacoustic simulations of human phonation.

This article deals with large-eddy simulations of three-dimensional incompressible laryngeal flow followed by acoustic simulations of human phonation of five cardinal English vowels, /ɑ, æ, i, o, u/. The flow and aeroacoustic simulations were performed in OpenFOAM and in-house code openCFS, respectively. Given the large variety of scales in the flow and acoustics, the simulation is separated into two steps: (1) computing the flow in the larynx using the finite volume method on a fine moving grid with 2.2 million elements, followed by (2) computing the sound sources separately and wave propagat
