Fractures and dislocations of the ankle joint.

The classification of fractures of the ankle joint is based on the mechanism of injury, which provides the clue to successful reduction. The physiological movements of the ankle and foot are defined, and the pathological movements associated with injury are described.

Injuries to the ankle and foot in athletics.

Accurate diagnosis in ligament and ligament-bone injuries of the foot and ankle demands a knowledge of the anatomy and mechanics of the foot and ankle, a good history of the mechanism of injury, clinical examination including fingertip palpation and assessment of stability, and adequate x-ray studies, perferably in the deformed position, with stress films and arthrograms in selected cases. By making an accurate diagnosis, early proper treatment is instituted, the athlete is restored to health sooner, and, almost as important, the athlete and the coach get a more realistic prognosis regarding t…

[Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the ankle].

Ankle lesions are problematic because of their frequency its anatomy and physiology are complex, disturbances of its functions are caused by the smallest c change of the anatomic relations. It is not able to put the fracture into line by the settled therapy; so these lesions are very frequent in our operative programme. the most important are the lateral maleolus -- its ligamentary part and the tibiofibular syndesmosis. The special emphasis is given to physiology and pathology of the ankle, the Weber's pathoanatomic classification of the ankle lesions is also given in this article.

Association of Ankle Joint Moment and Ankle Joint Velocity With 60° Ipsilateral Change-of-Direction Performance.

Chen, C-H, Yeh, M-C, Liu, C, Tseng, Y-J, and Lu, S-T. Association of ankle joint moment and ankle joint velocity with 60° ipsilateral change-of-direction performance. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2026-The rapid acceleration and deceleration associated with a change of direction (COD) is associated with high ankle loading, including high ankle moment and velocity, which have been linked to ankle sprain or chronic ankle instability. Although the correlations between ankle joint loading and contralateral COD (contra-COD) have been investigated, one study reported that ipsilateral COD (ipsi…

Comparison of clinical and radiological outcomes of total ankle arthroplasty in two subtypes of varus ankle osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: This study compared clinical and radiological outcomes of total ankle arthroplasty between rotation- and translation-type varus ankle osteoarthritis. METHODS: Forty-four consecutive patients (≥1-year follow-up) were reviewed and classified by medial gutter apposition (22 per group). Outcomes were assessed preoperatively, at 1-year, and final follow-up. RESULTS: Visual analogue scale improved from 5.7 to 1.9 in the rotation group and from 5.8 to 0.6 in the translation group; AOFAS hindfoot scores improved from 56.9 to 80.4 and from 51.4 to 92.2, respectively (all P < 0.001). The t…

The Synovial Fingerprint of Ankle Fractures: A Central Role for WNT Pathway Activation in Posttraumatic Ankle Osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the ankle is a disabling and understudied disease, most commonly emerging posttraumatically after ankle fractures (PTOA). Despite its prevalence, the molecular mechanisms linking joint trauma to ankle OA are not well defined, limiting opportunities for early intervention. This study characterized synovial transcriptional changes to identify early molecular drivers of disease onset in fracture-induced ankle PTOA. METHODS: Synovium was collected under an institutional review board-approved protocol from patients undergoing ankle fracture fixation, and ankle ar…
