PURPOSE: In a patient with an anorectal malformation (ARM), the presence of a coloboma is commonly associated with other serious anomalies.
METHODS: Our database and the world literature were reviewed searching for associated defects in patients with ARM and coloboma.
RESULTS: Of 2,482 ARMs in our database, 11 had coloboma (0.4%): 2 were females. No specific associated type of ARM was identified. Six patients were developmentally delayed. Eight had a cardiac anomaly (3 had TAPVR, 2 VSD, 3 ASD), five required a cardiac operation. Five had a gastrointestinal anomaly (3 malrotation, 1 biliary a

Anorectal symptoms are frequently found in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), mainly manifested as diffuse lower abdominal discomfort, constipation, and fecal incontinence. Among these symptoms, constipation may precede by years the motor manifestations of PD. Research has focused for decades on selection of a measurement method for detection of abnormalities and support of clinometric instruments for anorectal symptoms. We review those manifestations and their contribution to evaluation of the anorectal symptoms in patients with PD.

Congenital anorectal malformations are relatively common, and associated genitourinary malformations have been reported in up to 40% of patients. Uterovaginal malformations are also not rare in children. They are known to occur with increased frequency in children with anorectal malformations, but the diagnosis may still be difficult. We report herein one such case of anorectal malformation associated with congenital total absence of the vagina in which the uterovaginal malformation was not diagnosed until the operative repair of the anorectal malformation. The operative procedure was thereaft

The authors report on a newborn girl with complex urogenital and hindgut abnormalities. Urogenital anomalies consisted of absence of vulva and vagina, uterine and urethral atresias, bladder agenesis with ectopic ureteric opening, and bilateral pelvic ectopic kidneys. In addition, the baby had anorectal atresia without fistula as a hindgut anomaly. Herein, clinical evaluation and embryological review are made to explain the concomitant occurrence of these rare malformations.

A case of anal agenesia with recto-cutaneous fistula is presented. The recto-cutaneous fistula in an intermediate or high anomaly seldom noticed so that it is not included in the common classifications. The surgical approach performed by us was that described by Mollard. The anterior perineal pull-through, under proximal protective enterostomy, allow to reduce the rate of postoperative complications and sequences and obtain--as in our patient--a normal continence and sphincteric function with an excellent esthetic outcome.

The author presents the salient aspects of anorectal malformation which allow us to simplify their anatomical diagnosis. In many cases only clinical means are used while in others adequate use of technical studies are necessary. This enables us to reach therapeutic decisions in the simplest and most orderly fashion so that patients with these anomalies may be given the opportunity of attaining normal or near normal function.

Four cases of anal agenesis with rectobulbar fistula, a rare type of anorectal anomaly, are described along with the preferred mode of radiological investigation to demonstrate the fistula.
