The effects of atropine, propranolol, phentolamine, and orciprenaline on the minute-rhythmic fluctuations of the heart rate were investigated in urethane-anaesthetized mice. These drugs influenced the parameters of the minute rhythm (amplitude, length of period). However, the rhythm was not suppressed over any length of time. After blocking the vagus with atropine, the rhythm was maintained unchanged. In the other cases, the rhythm was not demonstrable only during the transition to a new level of heart rate. Immediately after the injection of each drug, the amplitude of the minute rhythm was v…

The antibronchospastic value of the triple association adrenaline (1) + atropine (0,3) + papaverine (3) has been documented experimentally. Comparative investigations have been carried out with isoprenaline, metaproterenol, terbutaline and salbutamol. Toxicological and pharmacodynamic studies were done in the cardiovascular system and in vitro on certain muscles.

PURPOSE: Low-dose atropine has been increasingly investigated as a pharmacological intervention to slow myopia progression in children. However, variability in atropine concentrations and reported outcomes across randomised clinical trials has led to uncertainty regrading its overall efficacy and safety. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of low-dose atropine eye drops (0.01-0.05%) in slowing myopia progression in children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42025635523). A comprehensive searc…

AIM: The aim is to systematically analyze the efficacy of 0.01%low-dose atropine therapy for myopia control and prevention in children. METHODS: All the data were searched from the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI and Cochrane Library. The Cochrane Handbook was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. This meta- analysis was performed with the Revman 5.4 software. RESULTS: Fifteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in this study with a total of 2527 patients, 1328 in treatment group and 1199 in control group. At a 12 month follow-up, compared with control group,…

BACKGROUND: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare outcomes of 0.01% atropine with orthokeratology (AOK) vs. orthokeratology (OK) alone for slowing the progression of myopia in children.
METHODS: MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), Chinese electronic databases of VIP, and Wanfang were searched from inception until 19th August 2024 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about the review topic. The primary outcome was a change in axial length (AL) (mm). Secondary outcomes were spherical equivalent refr…

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the key factors contributing to non-adherence in patients using 0.01% atropine for progressive myopia control in a specific single-center Turkish population and to propose strategies to enhance adherence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 30 patients (mean age: 10.67±3.47 years; age range: 5-16 years; 14 males and 16 females) diagnosed with progressive myopia and prescribed 0.01% atropine treatment in our clinic between January and June 2021. All participants had discontinued 0.01% atropine treatment before completion. The reason…

BACKGROUND: The production of tropane alkaloids such as atropine and scopolamine by chemical methods is costly. This study aimed to find a more efficient method for producing tropane alkaloids by investigating different LED light qualities and glycine treatment using leaf callus cultures of Hyoscyamus niger L. in vitro.
RESULTS: In this study, after producing healthy plantlets, callus induction was done in the B5 medium with 2-4-D (2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) at 2 mg L-1 with BA (6-benzyl adenine) at a concentration of 1 mg L-1. The use of LED light and glycine treatments started from the…

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the impact of the nitric oxide substrate L-arginine on the neuro- and hepato-toxic effects of malathion in rats.
METHODS: Rats were treated intraperitoneally with malathion (150 mg/kg) alone or combined with L-arginine (100, 200 or 400 mg/kg), atropine (2 mg/kg) or L-arginine (200 mg/kg) combined with atropine (2 mg/kg). Rats were euthanized 4 h later, and their brains and livers analyzed for malondialdehyde, nitric oxide (NO), reduced glutathione (GSH), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1). Moreover, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), interleukin-15 (IL-15) and anti-apoptotic protein…

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of atropine 0.01% in slowing the progression of myopia in young patients.
METHODS: 2,387 patients with progressive myopia (more than -0.50 spherical diopters ‹D› increased in the last year) were enrolled. They received, every evening, one drop of atropine 0.01% in each eye. Refraction was then measured at baseline (T0) and once a year (T1, T2, T3, T4) for a 4-years follow-up period, and compared with a non-treated control group.
RESULTS: A reduction in the myopic progression was observed in the treated group respect to the control one. The average spheric…

PURPOSE: To investigate changes in the choroid and axial length (AL) during one month of combined therapy and monotherapy with 0.05% atropine and dual-focus soft contact lens (DFCL), and the impact after discontinuation.
METHODS: Myopic adults randomly received three interventions: 0.05 % atropine, DFCL, and 0.05 % atropine combined with DFCL. Choroidal thickness (ChT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and AL were measured at baseline, 3, 7, 14, and 30 days after intervention, and 1, 2, 7, 14, and 30 days after discontinuation.
RESULTS: The ChT thickened and AL decreased after one month of …

We investigated the mechanism of action of atropine in myopia control by examining its effect on choroidal hemodynamics. Blood flow was evaluated using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence and molecular variation during the development of form-deprivation myopia (FDM) and atropine treatment in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs were divided randomly into the normal control (NC), FDM, and FDM + 1% atropine (ATR) groups, and evaluated by spherical equivalent refractive error (SE) and axial length (AL). Choroidal hemodynamic parameters were measured via ICG fluorescence imaging including the maximal ICG fl…

Background: Early-onset myopia increases the risk of irreversible high myopia. Methods: This study systematically evaluated the efficacy and safety of low-dose atropine for myopia control in children with premyopia through meta-analysis using random-effects models. Effect sizes were calculated using risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Comprehensive searches of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov were conducted until 20 December 2023, without language restrictions. Results: Four studies involving 644 children with premyopia aged 4-12 years were identified…

PURPOSE: To investigate whether choroidal vascularity participates in high-dose atropine's antimyopia and rebound mechanisms.
METHODS: A mediation analysis was embedded within a randomized controlled trial. In total, 207 myopic children were assigned randomly to group A/B. Participants in group A received 1% atropine weekly (phase 1) and 0.01% atropine daily (phase 2) for 6 months each. Those in group B received 0.01% atropine daily for 1 year. Four plausible intervention mediators were assessed: total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), stromal area (SA), and choroidal vascularity index…

INTRODUCTION: Orthokeratology (OK) and low-concentration atropine are recommended approaches for controlling myopia. However, children with younger age and lower myopia are more likely to experience rapid axial progression during OK or atropine monotreatment. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of OK combined with low-concentration atropine for myopia control in children over 24 months and to determine whether the effect was sustainable.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we reviewed medical records of baseline and follow-up visits from children (7-14 years) applying OK for myopia cont…
