[Pregnancy and traveling].

The second trimester is the safest time for travelling, because the pregnant woman feels generally most at ease and the risk of spontaneous abortion and pre-term labour is very low. Possible risks must be discussed with the obstetrician before travelling. If the pregnancy is uncomplicated most airlines allow flying up to the 36th (domestic flights) and 35th (international flights) week of gestation. Unless the fetal oxygen supply is already impaired at ground level due to an underlying disease, flying does not pose a risk of fetal hypoxia. Radiation exposure during a long distant flight is low

Comparison of human subjective and oculomotor responses to sinusoidal vertical linear acceleration.

Human subjects were vertically oscillated in the dark over a frequency range of 1-0.02 HZ at peak-to-peak acceleration amplitudes of 0.2-0.6 g, using both a vertical movement simulator and real flight. Subjective tracking of the movement was unreliable and showed no systematic dependence of phase upon frequency. In contrast, reflex oculomotor response, although weak, clearly demonstrated progressive and substantial phase lag with increasing frequency. The similarity of this characteristic to that previously obtained from brainstem neural responses in cat suggests the oculomotor response was pr

THE UNIVERISTY OF MANITOBA FOLLOW-UP STUDY: A PROSPECTIVE INVESTIGATION OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE. I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION--MORTALITY AND INCIDENCE OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE.

A prospective study of cardiovascular disease was initiated in 1946 whereby 3983 healthy North American males, 91% under age 40, were subjected to periodic electrocardiograms and medical examinations between 1948 and 1963. The health of all but five of the 3773 survivors was known in 1963. There were 210 deaths: aircraft accidents accounted for 45%, cardiovascular disease 20%, cancer 11% and other causes 23%. The aggregate mortality closely resembled that of the Canadian Life Table 1955-57 (Male). Extra deaths were observed under age 40 owing to a high frequency of flying accidents. At older a

Advances in Aircraft Accident Disaster Victim Identification Using DNA Techniques.

Modern DNA technologies have substantially advanced disaster victim identification. The advances are summarized while stressing privacy, security, and psychological values of victim identification. Identification of victims in fatal aircraft accidents demonstrated the effectiveness of DNA profiling. Initially based on minisatellite or microsatellite loci (i.e., short tandem repeats), DNA analyses are moving toward high-throughput massively parallel sequencing (MPS) that enables analysis of genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms, permitting typing of highly degraded samples with increased

UAS stealth: target pursuit at constant distance using a bio-inspired motion camouflage guidance law.

The aim of this study is to derive a guidance law by which an unmanned aerial system(s) (UAS) can pursue a moving target at a constant distance, while concealing its own motion. We derive a closed-form solution for the trajectory of the UAS by imposing two key constraints: (1) the shadower moves in such a way as to be perceived as a stationary object by the shadowee, and (2) the distance between the shadower and shadowee is kept constant. Additionally, the theory presented in this paper considers constraints on the maximum achievable speed and acceleration of the shadower. Our theory is tested

[Treatment specifics for spontaneous pneumothorax in flight personnel].

Spontaneous pneumothorax is one cause of aeronautical unfitness in flight personnel, because of the risk of recurrence in flight, making it an issue of flight safety. Specific treatment is required for fighter pilots, pilots flying single-pilot and pilots in professional training: surgical synthesis via video-thoracoscopy is obligatory from the first episode. Considering the exposure to an accumulation of aeronautical factors that are likely to encourage pneumothorax recurrence in flight, it is apical pleurectomy together with abrasion of the remaining pleura and resection of bullae/blebs that

Endoscopic frontal sinus drillout for recurrent barotrauma: a procedure to save a pilot's career.

INTRODUCTION: Complete sphenoethmoidectomy with a Draf IIA frontal dissection is the standard of care surgical management for medically resistant diffuse recurrent sinus barotrauma. Surgical failures still occur with this technique mainly due to the propensity of the frontal outflow tract to stenose. Endoscopic frontal revisions are notoriously prone to failure and historically represented the only option for aircrew afflicted by this career-ending complication of surgery. The frontal sinus drillout or endoscopic modified Lothrop procedure (EMLP) offers a highly successful salvage surgery for

Parachute landing fall characteristics at three realistic vertical descent velocities.

INTRODUCTION: Although parachute landing injuries are thought to be due in part to a lack of exposure of trainees to realistic descent velocities during parachute landing fall (PLF) training, no research has systematically investigated whether PLF technique is affected by different vertical descent conditions, with standardized and realistic conditions of horizontal drift. This study was designed to determine the effects of variations in vertical descent velocity on PLF technique. METHODS: Kinematic, ground reaction force, and electromyographic data were collected and analyzed for 20 paratroo

Prevention of edema in long flights with Pycnogenol.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevention of edema during long-haul flights with an oral, anti-edema and antithrombotic agent (Pycnogenol, Horphag, Research Management SA, Geneva, Switzerland) in asymptomatic subjects. The assessment of edema was performed by evaluating an analogue scale, the rate of ankle swelling by strain-gauge derived rate of ankle swelling (RAS), and by assessing the ankle circumference variation. The study included 211 subjects; 169 completed the study (88 in the control group and 81 in the Pycnogenol group). There were no important differences between the two

Fatal acute pulmonary embolism in a patient with pelvic lipomatosis after surgery performed after transatlantic airplane travel.

We describe a case of a 37-yr-old patient who traveled from Europe to the United States and succumbed to a massive pulmonary embolism 6 days after elective pelvic surgery despite routine postoperative thrombotic prophylaxis. In retrospect, he was likely to have developed a deep venous thrombosis during the transatlantic trip to our hospital. Anesthesiologists and other physicians involved in perioperative management need to be aware of the prevalence of venous thromboembolism in patients with a history of recent prolonged air travel. This is particularly true in tertiary referral centers, wher

Unusual limb injury associated with sport parachuting.

The case is reported of an open injury of the right arm sustained during a parachute jump. The fracture was managed in the usual way with wound debridement, wound irrigation, skeletal stabilisation, and reconstruction of the soft tissues. Good shoulder and elbow function were achieved. The combined effort of an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and plastic surgeon is essential to improve outcomes in such cases.

Fractional effective dose model for post-crash aircraft survivability.

The development of a survival model for post-crash aircraft cabin fires is described in this paper. Its development is based on an extensive review of the literature on the toxicity of combustion gases and on thermal hazards. This model is to be used as a predictive tool to gauge human survivability in full scale aircraft cabin fire tests. The extensive literature search was conducted for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), low oxygen, hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen bromide (HBr), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), acrolein

Post-traumatic stress disorder in airplane cabin crew attendants.

Six cabin crew attendants who survived an airplane crash in which 47 passengers were killed were assessed for post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological problems. Each was interviewed 8 months after the crash and completed questionnaires measuring intrusive thoughts, avoidance, depressed mood, anxiety, and fear. Questionnaires were repeated 10 months later. All six met DSM-III-R criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder, reported a wide range of symptoms, and developed a fear of flying 8 months after the crash. Depression scores were normal 18 months after the crash, but all othe

[Aeromedical problems in cranio-vertebral injuries].

Impact between the brain and the cristae of the base normally results as a consequence of inertia when an obstacle is hit, followed by contusion, or intra-, sub- or extradural haematoma. The skull itself may be briken (usually at the interpilasters or the weak points of the pilasters) or dented. Denting resulted in the depression of a circular fragments or fragments, with compression of the dura mater or brain; this, in turn, may be contused, lacerated or even crushed. Spinal crash fractures usually involve the lumbar region. Neck fractures are rare. The picture may be one of clinical silence

Spinal X-ray screening of high performance fighter pilots.

Neck pain and neck injury are common complaints among military aviators flying high performance (HPF) aircraft. Since all candidates for military flying training with the Royal Norwegian Air Force have to meet HPF medical standards, medical selection procedures include a radiological examination of the spine. Nine films of the vertebral column are made with emphasis put on cervical structures. Among 232 applicants, 527 deviations from normal conditions were described--anomalies, degenerative changes and deviations of posture--which average 2.27 diagnoses per spine X-rayed. Of the candidates, 8
