The synovitis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of few pathological lesions in which B lymphocyte accumulation progresses to the extent of germinal centre formation. The present study was designed to assess the ability of synovial fibroblasts to express molecules implicated in B lymphocyte survival and differentiation, both in vivo, and in response to cytokines in vitro. Human cytolytic T lymphocytes specific for autologous Burkitt's lymphoma express the gamma, delta T cell receptor and recognize immunoglobulin idiotype in an MHC-unrestricted manner. Antibodies against a member of the heat shock protein 70 family inhibit this specific cytotoxicity, implicating these molecules in tumor recognition and antigen presentation. Such data is relevant to the design of novel immunotherapies for cancer and provides new insights into target recognition by gamma, delta T cells.

Patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (BCLL) have low levels of serum IgG. In order to determine if this is a pan IgG deficiency or a selective suppression of one or more IgG subclasses, levels of IgG 1, 2, 3 and 4 in nine BCLL patients were determined and compared to those of nine age and sex matched controls. No significant differences were found in the levels of IgG1 and IgG2, but the patients were found to have significantly lower levels of IgG3 (p < 0.05) and IgG4 (p < 0.05). Chromosome analysis was made on mitogen-activated leukemic cells from 99 patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Fifty-three patients had clonal chromosome aberrations. Lymphocyte subpopulations were measured in the blood of 17 patients with megaloblastic anaemia due to vitamin B-12 deficiency. 14 patients had pernicious anaemia and 3 others were gastrectomized. The karyotypes of 103 cases of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia were studied following stimulation or establishment of continuous cell lines using the Epstein-Barr virus.
