EEG microstate co-specificity in schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The past 20 years of research on EEG microstates has yielded the hypothesis that the imbalance pattern in the temporal dynamics of microstates C (increased) and D (decreased) is specific to schizophrenia. A similar microstate imbalance has been recently found in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the present high-density EEG study was to examine whether this pathological microstate pattern is co-specific to schizophrenia and OCD. We compared microstate temporal dynamics using Bayesian analyses, transition probabilities analyses and the Topographic Electrophysiological State Source

Diagnosing dry-eye: Which tests are most accurate?

PURPOSE: To demonstrate how the likelihood of making a correct diagnosis of dry eye disease varies according to the clinical test methods used. METHODS: The probability of a person having dry eye, given that they return a positive test, was calculated for a range of standard tests, using the Bayes-Price rule. Global specificity and sensitivity values for each test were estimated by employing the Beta distribution to combine all relevant data obtained from a literature review. RESULTS: At an assumed prevalence of 11.6%, the single test with the highest probability of a correct diagnosis was c

An early-diverging iguanodontian (Dinosauria: Rhabdodontomorpha) from the Late Cretaceous of North America.

Intensifying macrovertebrate reconnaissance together with refined age-dating of mid-Cretaceous assemblages in recent decades is producing a more nuanced understanding of the impact of the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum on terrestrial ecosystems. Here we report discovery of a new early-diverging ornithopod, Iani smithi gen. et sp. nov., from the Cenomanian-age lower Mussentuchit Member, Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah, USA. The single known specimen of this species (NCSM 29373) includes a well-preserved, disarticulated skull, partial axial column, and portions of the appendicular skeleton. Apomorp

Spatial genetic structure of 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza established as a result of interaction with human populations in mainland China.

Identifying the spatial patterns of genetic structure of influenza A viruses is a key factor for understanding their spread and evolutionary dynamics. In this study, we used phylogenetic and Bayesian clustering analyses of genetic sequences of the A/H1N1pdm09 virus with district-level locations in mainland China to investigate the spatial genetic structure of the A/H1N1pdm09 virus across human population landscapes. Positive correlation between geographic and genetic distances indicates high degrees of genetic similarity among viruses within small geographic regions but broad-scale genetic dif

Semi-Supervised Dual Stream Segmentation Network for Fundus Lesion Segmentation.

Accurate segmentation of retinal images can assist ophthalmologists to determine the degree of retinopathy and diagnose other systemic diseases. However, the structure of the retina is complex, and different anatomical structures often affect the segmentation of fundus lesions. In this paper, a new segmentation strategy called a dual stream segmentation network embedded into a conditional generative adversarial network is proposed to improve the accuracy of retinal lesion segmentation. First, a dual stream encoder is proposed to utilize the capabilities of two different networks and extract mo

Development and validation of a diagnostic aid for convulsive epilepsy in sub-Saharan Africa: a retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Identification of convulsive epilepsy in sub-Saharan Africa relies on access to resources that are often unavailable. Infrastructure and resource requirements can further complicate case verification. Using machine-learning techniques, we have developed and tested a region-specific questionnaire panel and predictive model to identify people who have had a convulsive seizure. These findings have been implemented into a free app for health-care workers in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania, and South Africa. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, we used data from the Studie

Individual exposure of ambient particulate matters and eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal Polyps: Dose-Response, mediation effects and recurrence prediction.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the association between ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure and eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), and predicted the CRSwNP recurrence risk using machine learning algorithms. METHODS: In total, 1,086 patients with CRSwNP were recruited from nine hospitals in China during 2014-2019. The average annual concentrations of ambient PMs before surgery were assessed using satellite-based daily concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 for a 1 × 1-km2 area. Linear regression and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations of PM expos

State-specific alterations in the neural computations underlying inhibitory control in women remitted from bulimia nervosa.

The neurocomputational processes underlying bulimia nervosa and its primary symptoms, out-of-control overeating and purging, are poorly understood. Research suggests that the brains of healthy individuals form a dynamic internal model to predict whether control is needed in each moment. This study tested the hypothesis that this computational process of inhibitory control is abnormally affected by metabolic state (being fasted or fed) in bulimia nervosa. A Bayesian ideal observer model was fit to behavioral data acquired from 22 women remitted from bulimia nervosa and 20 group-matched controls

Relationship between skill training and skill transfer through the example of bimanual motor learning.

Skill training aims to improve the performance of the task at hand and aims to transfer the acquired skill to related tasks. Both skill training and skill transfer are part of our everyday lives, and essential for survival, and their importance is reflected in years of research. Despite these enormous efforts, however, the complex relationship between skill training and skill transfer is not yet portrayed completely. Building upon two theories, we probed this relationship through the example of bimanual learning with a large cross-sectional design (N = 450) using an online framework. We design

Impact and Equity of New York City's Tobacco Retail Reduction Initiative.

INTRODUCTION: High levels of tobacco retailer density in communities is associated with a range of tobacco use behaviors and is a key structural driver of tobacco-related disparities. This study evaluates the impacts of New York City's (NYC) novel policy intervention to cap tobacco retail licenses on tobacco retailer density levels and neighborhood inequities in tobacco access. METHODS: Using geocoded tobacco retail licensing data from 2010 to 2022, Bayesian conditional autoregressive Poisson panel models estimated the association between policy implementation in 2018 and retailer density per

A Systematic Review of Areal Units and Adjacency Used in Bayesian Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Conditional Autoregressive Models in Health Research.

Advancements in Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal modelling have been observed in recent years. Despite this, there are unresolved issues about the choice of appropriate spatial unit and adjacency matrix in disease mapping. There is limited systematic review evidence on this topic. This review aimed to address these problems. We searched seven databases to find published articles on this topic. A modified quality assessment tool was used to assess the quality of studies. A total of 52 studies were included, of which 26 (50.0%) were on infectious diseases, 10 (19.2%) on chronic diseases, 8 (

Removal rate of 5-fluorouracil and its metabolites in patients on hemodialysis: a report of two cases of colorectal cancer patients with end-stage renal failure.

PURPOSE: Hyperammonemia is a serious adverse effect of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) administration. Hemodialysis can be used for its management, but detailed data on the concentrations and removal rate of 5FU and its metabolites during hemodialysis remain unclear. Here, we present two cases of hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease who received concurrent 5FU infusion. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from the hemodialysis circuit before and after the dialyzer during day 2 hemodialysis sessions, and from the internal shunt just before and after day 4 hemodialysis sessions. A novel naïve Bayes approach to identifying grooming behaviors in the force-plate actometric platform.

BACKGROUND: Self-grooming behavior in rodents serves as a valuable behavioral index for investigating stereotyped and perseverative responses. Most current grooming analyses rely on video observation, which lacks standardization, efficiency, and quantitative information about force. To address these limitations, we developed an automated paradigm to analyze grooming using a force-plate actometer. NEW METHOD: Grooming behavior is quantified by calculating ratios of relevant movement power spectral bands. These ratios are input into a naïve Bayes classifier, trained with manual video observatio

A novel computational approach to pain perception modelling within a Bayesian framework using quantitative sensory testing.

Pain perception can be studied as an inferential process in which prior information influences the perception of nociceptive input. To date, there are no suitable psychophysical paradigms to measure this at an individual level. We developed a quantitative sensory testing paradigm allowing for quantification of the influence of prior expectations versus current nociceptive input during perception. Using a Pavlovian-learning task, we investigated the influence of prior expectations on the belief about the varying strength of association between a painful electrical cutaneous stimulus and a visua

From dawn till dusk: Time-adaptive bayesian optimization for neurostimulation.

Stimulation optimization has garnered considerable interest in recent years in order to efficiently parametrize neuromodulation-based therapies. To date, efforts focused on automatically identifying settings from parameter spaces that do not change over time. A limitation of these approaches, however, is that they lack consideration for time dependent factors that may influence therapy outcomes. Disease progression and biological rhythmicity are two sources of variation that may influence optimal stimulation settings over time. To account for this, we present a novel time-varying Bayesian opti

The effect of sodium thiosulfate on immune cell metabolism during porcine hemorrhage and resuscitation.

INTRODUCTION: Sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3), an H2S releasing agent, was shown to be organ-protective in experimental hemorrhage. Systemic inflammation activates immune cells, which in turn show cell type-specific metabolic plasticity with modifications of mitochondrial respiratory activity. Since H2S can dose-dependently stimulate or inhibit mitochondrial respiration, we investigated the effect of Na2S2O3 on immune cell metabolism in a blinded, randomized, controlled, long-term, porcine model of hemorrhage and resuscitation. For this purpose, we developed a Bayesian sampling-based model for 13

Reorganization of sensorimotor representations of the intact limb after upper but not lower limb traumatic amputation.

It is becoming increasingly clear that limb loss induces wider spread reorganization of representations of the body that are nonadjacent to the affected cortical territory. Data from upper extremity amputees reveal intrusion of the representation of the ipsilateral intact limb into the former hand territory. Here we test for the first time whether this reorganization of the intact limb into the deprived cortex is specific to the neurological organization of the upper limbs or reflects large scale adaptation that is triggered by any unilateral amputation. BOLD activity was measured as human sub
