Acetylcholine and muscarinic agonists increase synaptic ribbon numbers in the rat pineal.

Mammalian pinealocytes possess synaptic ribbons (SR) which are commonly present in photoreceptor cells at synaptic junctions. Pineal SR numbers undergo a diurnal rhythm parallel to that of pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and melatonin levels. Recent findings suggest that SR numbers, unlike NAT activity and melatonin synthesis and release, do not seem to be regulated by adrenergic mechanisms or neuropeptides in adult rats. Since the pineal gland also receives cholinergic nerve fibres, we have investigated in vitro effects of acetylcholine (ACh) and carbamyl-beta-methylcholine (CBMC; a

Localizing beta synchronous neurons in the STN using directional DBS recordings and patient-specific biophysical models.

OBJECTIVE: Local field potentials (LFPs) exhibit abnormally elevated beta-band power in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). To better understand these signals, we coupled advanced biophysical models with experimental LFP recordings to characterize the neural sources underlying beta oscillations in PD patients. METHODS: Patient-specific biophysical models simulated LFPs with detailed representation of the directional DBS electrodes in the local neuroanatomy, as well as the ionic currents generated by STN neural activity. We then used the models to perform s

Cortical-to-pallidal beta cascade underlies network pathophysiology in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms are linked to excessive beta band (13-35 Hz) oscillations and basal ganglia-cortical (BGC) synchrony, yet their dynamic inter-relation remains unclear. Based on computational modeling, we hypothesize that transient high-beta (20-35 Hz) BGC coupling induces subcortical low-beta (13-20 Hz) amplification. We recorded intraoperative neural signals from the globus pallidus internus and externus (GPi and GPe, respectively) and motor cortex (M1) in 23 PD patients during deep brain stimulation implantation. High-beta bursts in M1 and GPe were classified as eithe

Modulation of beta oscillatory dynamics in motor and frontal areas during physical fatigue.

Beta-band oscillations have been suggested to promote the maintenance of the current motor (or cognitive) set, thus signaling the 'status quo' of the system. While this hypothesis has been reliably demonstrated in many studies, it fails to explain changes in beta-band activity due to the accumulation of physical fatigue. In the current study, we aimed to reconcile the functional role of beta oscillations during physical fatigue within the status quo theory. Using an innovative electroencephalography design, we identified two distinct beta-band power dynamics in the motor areas as fatigue rises

Brain basis for physical activity levels mediate beta Inhibition to improve cognitive function in elderly based on multimodality monitoring.

The ameliorative effect of regular physical activity (PA) on cognitive function (CF) in older adults has been demonstrated. However, there are differences in the effects of different levels of PA on CF over time. To provide a more efficient exercise prescription for older adults, we compared differences in CF with neural mechanisms in individuals with different weekly activity levels. In this study, 68 older adults (n = 68, M = 47, F = 21, Age = 62.43 ± 4.36) were categorized according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) into high volume PA group (HG) (MET-min/week = 15

Cortical Effects of Dopamine Replacement Account for Clinical Response Variability in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Individual variability in clinical response to dopamine replacement therapy (DRT) is a key barrier to efficacious treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). A better understanding of the neurobiological sources of such interindividual differences is necessary to personalize DRT prescribing, inform future clinical interventions, and motivate translational research. OBJECTIVE: One potential source of this variability is an unintended secondary activation of extra-nigrostriatal dopamine systems by DRT, particularly in the neocortex. Our goal was to determine the clinical e

Motor control performance-related modulation of beta-band EEG-sEMG coherence differs between general and local muscular exercise-induced fatigue.

PURPOSE: Exercise-induced fatigue can reduce motor control performance and increase the risk of sporting injuries, which are related to functional coupling within the corticomotoneuronal pathway. However, the differences in functional coupling caused by general and local muscular exercise-induced fatigue are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exercise-induced fatigue on the beta-band (16-30 Hz) functional coupling between the sensorimotor cortex (SM1) and muscles of the dominant lower limb under different fatigue protocols. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy male participants w

Chronic dizziness in older adults: Disrupted sensorimotor EEG beta oscillations during postural instability.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic dizziness is common in older adults, yet frequently occurs without a clear cause ('idiopathic dizziness'). Patients experience subjective unsteadiness with minimal objective imbalance, potentially related to small vessel disease. Here we examine the hypothesis that this syndrome is associated with disrupted cortical processing of postural instability. METHODS: EEG and postural sway were recorded in 33 older adults with chronic, idiopathic dizziness (Age, Mean = 77.3 years, SD = 6.4, 61 % female) and 25 matched controls (Age, Mean = 76.9 years, SD = 6.0, 56 % female). Movement Related Beta-Band Modulation with OPM-MEG: A Pilot Study.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) represent a significant advancement in magnetoencephalography (MEG), offering high sensitivity without cryogenic cooling and enabling flexible sensor placement. In this pilot study, we evaluated whether a small, zero-contact 16-channel OPM array can capture movement-related beta-band modulation (event-related desynchronization/synchronization; ERD/ERS) in healthy participants and explored feasibility in a single patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). MEG responses to visually cued active and passive finger movements were recorded in a magnetical

Exploring neural correlates of social dominance: Insights from behavioral, resting- state EEG, and ERP indices.

Numerous studies have explored the concept of social dominance and its implications for leadership within the behavioral and cognitive sciences in recent years. The current study aims to address the gap regarding the neural correlates of social dominance by investigating the associations between psychological measures of social dominance and neural features among a sample of leaders. Thirty healthy male volunteers engaged in a monetary gambling task while their resting-state and task-based electroencephalography data were recorded. The results revealed a positive association between social dom

A simulation study of transcranial magnetoacoustic stimulation of the basal ganglia thalamic neural network to improve pathological beta oscillations in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease. Transcranial magnetoacoustic stimulation (TMAS) is a new therapy that combines a transcranial focused acoustic pressure field with a magnetic field to excite or inhibit neurons in targeted area, which suppresses the abnormally elevated beta band amplitude in PD states, with high spatial resolution and non-invasively. OBJECTIVE: To study the effective stimulation parameters of TMAS mononuclear and multinuclear stimulation for the treatment of PD with reduced beta band energy, improved abnormal synchronization, and no t

Cortisol on Circadian Rhythm and Its Effect on Cardiovascular System.

The synthesis and secretion of cortisol are controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Cortisol exhibits a proper 24-h circadian rhythm that affects the brain, the autonomic nervous system, the heart, and the vasculature that prepares the cardiovascular system for optimal function during these anticipated behavioral cycles. A literature search was conducted using databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. Relevant search terms included "circadian rhythm and cardiovascular", "cortisol", "cortisol and acute coronary syndrome", "cortisol and arrhythmias", "cortisol and sudd

Gait-related frequency modulation of beta oscillatory activity in the subthalamic nucleus of parkinsonian patients.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal beta band activity in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is known to be exaggerated in patients with Parkinson's disease, and the amplitude of such activity has been associated with akinetic rigid symptoms. New devices for deep brain stimulation (DBS) that operate by adapting the stimulation parameters generally rely on the detection of beta activity amplitude modulations in these patients. Movement-related frequency modulation of beta oscillatory activity has been poorly investigated, despite being an attractive variable for extracting information about basal ganglia activity.

Patients with fibromyalgia show increased beta connectivity across distant networks and microstates alterations in resting-state electroencephalogram.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain of unknown etiology associated with alterations in the central nervous system. Although previous studies demonstrated altered patterns of brain activity during pain processing in patients with FM, alterations in spontaneous brain oscillations, in terms of functional connectivity or microstates, have been barely explored so far. Here we recorded the EEG from 43 patients with FM and 51 healthy controls during open-eyes resting-state. We analyzed the functional connectivity between different brain networks computing the pha

Shared rhythmic subcortical GABAergic input to the entorhinal cortex and presubiculum.

Rhythmic theta frequency (~5-12 Hz) oscillations coordinate neuronal synchrony and higher frequency oscillations across the cortex. Spatial navigation and context-dependent episodic memories are represented in several interconnected regions including the hippocampal and entorhinal cortices, but the cellular mechanisms for their dynamic coupling remain to be defined. Using monosynaptically-restricted retrograde viral tracing in mice, we identified a subcortical GABAergic input from the medial septum that terminated in the entorhinal cortex, with collaterals innervating the dorsal presubiculum.

Effects of sertraline on brain current source of the high beta frequency band: analysis of electroencephalography during audiovisual erotic stimulation in males with premature ejaculation.

To identify the effects of sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, for the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE), changes in brain current-source density (CSD) of the high beta frequency band (22-30 Hz) induced by sertraline administration were investigated during audiovisual erotic stimulation. Eleven patients with PE (36.9±7.8 yrs) and 11 male volunteers (24.2±1.9 years) were enrolled. Scalp electroencephalography (EEG) was conducted twice: once before sertraline administration and then again 4 h after the administration of 50 mg sertraline. Statistical non-parametric maps we

Changes in nocturnal pineal indoleamine metabolism in rats treated with parathion are prevented by beta-adrenergic antagonist administration.

Parathion, an organophosphorous insecticide, was previously shown to enhance the nighttime rise in pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and serum melatonin levels. The purpose of the present study was to test whether parathion acts on the pineal gland by means of a beta-adrenergic receptor mechanism. Whereas parathion (total dose 6.5 mg/kg body wt over 6 days) by itself significantly augmented nocturnal pineal NAT activity and serum melatonin levels in otherwise untreated rats, the insecticide was ineffective in reference to this enzyme when it was given in conjunction with the beta-adren

Urinary albumin excretion in patients with renovascular hypertension.

Twenty-four hour urinary excretion of albumin (UEalb), IgG and beta-2 microglobulin was investigated at a 3 hour-interval in a control group (C) of healthy subjects, in 30 patients with renovascular hypertension (RVH), and in 16 patients with essential hypertension (EH). Mean UEalb in RVH was significantly higher than in C. A significant direct correlation was demonstrated between diastolic blood pressure and UEalb (p < 0.01). Microalbuminuria (MA) > or = 30 micrograms.min-1 was found in about 18% of RVH patients; it was higher than 16.7 micrograms.min-1 in approx. 31%. These results did not s

The effects of castration, testosterone replacement and photoperiod upon hypothalamic beta-endorphin levels in the male Syrian hamster.

Syrian hamsters kept in long day-lengths have active gonads and high circulating levels of gonadal steroids. Under the influence of the pineal gland, animals exposed to short photoperiods undergo testicular regression, have low circulating levels of testosterone and gonadotrophins and elevated levels of beta-endorphin within the hypothalamus. This paper describes the interaction between testosterone and photoperiod in the regulation of beta-endorphin levels in three regions of the hypothalamus. Hypothalamic beta-endorphin levels were measured by a combination of high-performance liquid chromat
