BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery has become the standard of care for benign gallbladder disease.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We treated two middle-aged women having acute exacerbations of chronic gallbladder disease with laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A cholecystoduodenal fistula was diagnosed intraoperatively in each case. These fistulae were repaired laparoscopically using an endoscopic stapling device without complication.
RESULTS: Each patient did well postoperatively and was discharged to home on the second postoperative day in good condition.

Thirty-seven patients (33 women and four men, median age 78 years) were operated on for gallstone ileus over a 12-year period with a median follow-up of 6.2 years. Twenty-three patients (62 per cent) had serious concomitant diseases. Plain abdominal radiographs performed at admission were diagnostic in only 17 patients (46 per cent) and other procedures such as ultrasonography, gastrointestinal contrast studies and computed tomographic scan were required in ten patients (27 per cent). The authors report their experience relative to 33 patients with hepatic hydatidosis surgically treated during the years 1987 through 1993. Various surgical techniques were employed: subtotal (21 cases) and total (5 cases) cystopericystectomy, partial pericystectomy (12 cases), hepatic resection (2 cases). The postoperative rate complication was 30% (4 cases of cholangitis, 4 biliary fistulas, 1 suppuration of residual cavity and 1 colonic fistula). The postoperative morbidity was higher in patients treated with partial pericystectomy. There was no postoperative mortality.

The paper presents a patient with a traumatic combined injury of pancreas, duodenum and peripancreatic vessels successfully treated by performing duodenopancreatectomy with splenectomy. Severe complications developed in postoperative period: postoperative haemorrhage, intra-abdominal abscesses, biliary and intestinal fistula. Eight patients have been admitted with gallstone ileus (GSI) to the Herning Central Hospital during the period 1960--1977. All of the patients were subjected to enterolithotomy only. One patient died postoperatively. On follow-up examination 6 months to 11 1/2 years after operation, one patient complained of a recurrence of cholecystitis, but refused operation.
