INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with hypercoagulability in patients with Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). We used a vein-to-vein database to examine the impact of transfusion of plasma units from blood donors with recent SARS-CoV-2 infection.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We linked donor SARS-CoV-2 serology data with plasma transfusions occurring between 6/1/2020 and 3/31/2022. Using multivariable regression, we examined changes in the international normalized ratio (INR) and subsequent transfusion requirements following plasma transfusion relative to the timing of donor SARS-CoV-

Leukocytes have ability to distinguish between self cells (body own cells) and foreign (allogenic) cells on the basis of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) proteins that are present on the cell membrane and are effectively unique to a person. During allogenic blood transfusion a person receives large number of allogenic donor leukocytes and these are recognized as foreign cells by the recipient immune system which leads to several adverse reactions. To avoid such leukocyte-mediated adverse reactions leukodepleted blood transfusion is required. Leukocytes can be separated on the basis of size, diele

BACKGROUND: Excessive use of blood components during liver transplantation should be avoided because it has been associated with poor outcomes and it may stress blood bank resources.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: To determine preoperative predictors of excessive transfusion requirements in patients undergoing liver transplantation, the clinical records of 126 consecutive adult patients undergoing primary liver transplantation were retrospectively reviewed. Outcome variables included number of red blood cells (RBCs), plasma, and plateletpheresis components intraoperatively transfused. Univariate a

Extravasation is an inadvertent injection or leakage of fluid and drugs in the extravascular or subcutaneous space. The extravasation by massive transfused blood results in the elevation of intra-compartmental pressures. Severely increased pressure may lead to acute compartment syndrome (ACS). A 50-year-old man underwent craniectomy for traumatic subdural hemorrhage of the brain. During intraoperative periods, the blood components were transfused by rapid transfusion device and manual pressurized pumping through the central and peripheral lines because of hemorrhagic hypovolemic shock. Nowadays, risk of transfusion-transmitted infection has been substantially minimized by stringent donor eligibility screening and infectious disease testing. However, we report an interdiction of a blood donation containing varicella-zoster virus (VZV) by donor self-reporting of chickenpox. The donor developed varicella infection shortly after blood donation despite vaccination. Varicella-zoster virus DNA was detected in her fresh-frozen plasma before the blood components were issued for clinical transfusion. The report indicates the importance of donors' education and awareness of their oblig

Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cp) is an obligate intracellular pathogen associated with a variety of maladies. Best known for its involvement in community-acquired pneumonia outbreaks; the potential role of Cp in diverse illnesses is a topic of increasing interest and investigation. Previous studies suggested that white blood cells from normal blood donors harboring this agent may be eliminated through leukoreduction by filtration. Here we examine the ability and efficacy of apheresis-related leukoreduction for its effect on the carriage and potential infectivity of these organisms in the preparation

Anti-M is a relatively common naturally occurring antibody reacting optimally at 4°C and weakly or nonreactive at 37°C. It is usually clinically insignificant but can be active at 37°C because of thermal amplitude of IgM component or presence of IgG component. It can cause or delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions or hemolytic disease of newborn. At our center we have encountered two cases of anti-M antibodies- one presenting as crossmatch incompatibility and other as blood grouping discrepancy in the last 8 months.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces significant challenges in implementing effective haemovigilance systems, thereby increasing the risk of adverse events following transfusion. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the frequency, clinical patterns and determinants of acute transfusion reactions (ATRs) in the region, in order to inform evidence-based prevention strategies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and the studies were a priori stratified by design. Pooled

BACKGROUND: Contamination of blood products by white blood cells leads to a risk of transmission of infectious agents, particularly abnormal prion protein, the probable causative agent of new-variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Blood product filtration could reduce this risk, but the filtration systems might generate potentially infectious membrane fragments. We developed an original flow cytometric method that allows the detection and quantification of membrane fragments in filtered products and the evaluation of the quantity of destroyed cells.
METHODS: This method has four technical require

BACKGROUND: The benefit of transfusion of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and platelets in a 1:1 ratio with packed red blood cells (PRBCs) is well established; however, the benefit of a particular ratio of cryoprecipitate to PRBC is not. The Joint Trauma System updated its 2019 Damage Control Resuscitation Guideline by recommending empiric 1:1 cryoprecipitate/PRBCs. We hypothesized that patients receiving product within the cryoprecipitate/PRBC guideline range (high ratio) would have an associated reduction in mortality.
METHODS: We included adult patients in the Trauma Quality Improvement Program

BACKGROUND: The concordance of haemovigilance criteria developed for surveillance of transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO) with its clinical diagnosis has not been assessed. In a pilot study to evaluate an electronic screening algorithm, we sought to examine TACO incidence and application of haemovigilance criteria in patients with post-transfusion pulmonary oedema.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: From June to September 2014, all transfused adult inpatients at four academic hospitals were screened with an algorithm identifying chest radiographs ordered within 12 h of blood component re

OBJECTIVE: Despite lack of evidence supporting efficacy, prophylactic fresh frozen plasma and Octaplas transfusions may be administered to very preterm infants to reduce bleeding risk. International variation in plasma transfusion practices in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is poorly understood, therefore, we aimed to describe neonatal plasma transfusion practice in Europe.
DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
SETTING: 64 NICUs in 22 European countries, with a 6-week study period per centre between September 2022 and August 2023.
PATIENTS: Preterm infants born below 32 weeks of g

More than one year into the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, healthcare systems across the world continue to be overwhelmed with soaring daily cases. The treatment spectrum primarily includes ventilation support augmented with repurposed drugs and/or convalescent plasma transfusion (CPT) from recovered COVID-19 patients. Despite vaccine variants being recently developed and administered in several countries, challenges in global supply chain logistics limit their timely availability to the wider world population, particularly in developing countries. Given the measured succe

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hemorrhagic complications during ECMO may affect a large proportion of the patients depending on the clinical setting. To guarantee optimal delivery of blood products to these patients, blood banks require updated information on the transfusion requirements. Few studies to date provide this information. This work assesses transfusion requirements in neonates and children during ECMO during the past 9 years.
METHODS: We reviewed blood bank and hospital records of patients who underwent ECMO at our institution between May 2003 and May 2012. Data obtained included age, weight, d

Neonatal lupus is a rare syndrome resulting from passively transferred maternal autoantibodies during pregnancy. A male infant was delivered at term to a 29-year-old primiparous woman who was diagnosed of systemic lupus erythematosus 2 years earlier and had detectable levels of autoantibodies (antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-dsDNA, anti-Ro and anti-La/SSB) in second trimester. However, the pregnancy was otherwise uneventful. He presented at the age of 8 week with a widespread hypopigmented macular rash on the trunk and patchy alopecia involving the hair line and the occipito-parietal regions

Amniotic fluid embolisms (AFE) are one of the most fatal complications of pregnancy. We describe a case of AFE that occurred 2 h after vaginal delivery at 41 weeks of gestation. The diagnosis of AFE was made by symptoms of dyspnea, coagulopathy, and severe hypotension. ZnCP-1, the characteristic component of meconium, was elevated in the serum. Cardiac compressions after repeated cardiac arrests were required during the initial 2 h of resuscitation. Primary resuscitation was performed with airway management and aggressive fluid management, including infusion of 33 units of red cell concentrate

Both fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and platelets are heavily used in massive transfusion. Although FFP can partially correct abnormal coagulation, a recent systematic review revealed no randomized trials showing clinical benefit. Although the overall risks of FFP and platelets are low, they are the least safe blood components, due to immunologic reactions such as allergy/anaphylaxis, transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and hemolysis due to anti-A or anti-B if transfused across ABO groups. TRALI, an acute syndrome of dyspnoea, hypoxia and pulmonary 'white-out' is now a major cause of tran
