STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine if body fat distribution affects breast cancer risk.
DESIGN: Prospective case-control study.
PATIENTS: The anthropometric measurements of 216 consecutively and newly diagnosed women with invasive carcinoma of the breast were compared with those of 432 age-matched controls. The anthropometric measurements taken were abdomen, thigh, suprailiac, biceps, triceps, subscapular, and midaxillary skinfolds; waist and hip circumference; and weight and height. Following analysis of interview data, 4 key themes emerged: Living with male breast cancer, concealment as a strategy for managing the diagnosis, a contested masculinity, interacting with health services. Skin biopsies were performed in a patient with livedoid and necrotic lesions of the forearm. Periodic acid-Schiff-stained and birefringent Maltese cross-patterned foreign bodies were observed in capillary vessels. It was consistent with the diagnosis of intra-arterial injections of a substance containing corn starch. This finding confirmed the clinical diagnosis of intra-arterial injection of solubilized tablets of buprenorphine. This case constitutes a rare clinical presentation of foreign bodies injections in a drug addict.

Cytomegalovirus is present in the female lower genital tract with an incidence of 4% to 12%. Intracellular inclusion bodies, which constitute evidence of the presence of this organism, are noted on Papanicolaou smears or at direct biopsy. All previous reports regarding tissue diagnosis have involved the uterine cervix. We report an unusual case of a postmenopausal woman who was found to have recurrent symptomatic vaginal lesions; repeated biopsies of the lesion disclosed the presence of cytomegalovirus inclusion bodies.

BACKGROUND: Combined liver-kidney transplantation is the definitive treatment for end-stage renal disease caused by primary hyperoxaluria type I (PH1). The infantile form is characterized by renal failure early in life, advanced systemic oxalosis, and a formidable mortality rate. Carotid body tumors constitute the third commonest group of parapharyngeal tumors. Newer diagnostic modalities such as computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, and Doppler ultrasound are commonly used for diagnosing lesions at this site. However, simple technique of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is rarely performed in apprehension of complication of hemorrhage. Present case report is of carotid body paraganglioma diagnosed on FNA without any complications and thus providing definite preoperative diagnosis to the surgeon.

A new Swedish twin register was created in 1998. All male twins born in Sweden 1973-1979 were identified in the Swedish Medical Birth Register. 3566 twins (1783 pairs) who were alive and residents of Sweden in 1997 were included in the new register. Data on birthweight, birthlength, gestational age, and so forth, were obtained from the Medical Birth Register.
