The biological functions of Lonicera japonica in animal husbandry and its application in green breeding.

Lonicera japonica (honeysuckle) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known for its properties of clearing heat, detoxifying, cooling blood, dispersing wind, and exerting anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. Research conducted on domestic animals, the bioactive constituents found in Lonicera japonica have been demonstrated to potentiate the immune response, thereby augmenting the animal's disease resistance capabilities. The antioxidant ingredients effectively diminish free radicals within the animal, thereby slowing down cellular aging and enhancing the quality of animal-derived pro

Reconsidering the Selection Strategy in a Flemish Honey Bee Breeding Program: Towards Selection by Exclusion.

Selective breeding is widely used to improve honey bee health and colony performance, commonly applying selection based on colony traits. Since 2017, a mass selection program in Flanders, Belgium, has ranked queens according to resilience, productivity and behavior traits. Using longitudinal data (2017-2024), we evaluated the effectiveness of this strategy by assessing colony performance across years and generations. Behavioral traits showed the clearest improvement over time, whereas progress in productivity and especially resilience-related traits remained limited. Offspring of top-ranking q…

A Novel ZmLG1 Allele as a Genetic Resource for Breeding Compact Plant Architecture in Maize.

BACKGROUND: Leaf angle is a key determinant of plant architecture and yield under high-density planting. Loss of the ligule reduces leaf angle, offering a strategy for breeding compact maize. This study aims to identify the genetic basis of the liguleless mutant jd30 and develop a functional marker for breeding. METHODS: The jd30 mutant was phenotypically characterized and compared with the wild type (WT). Genetic analysis was performed using F2 populations. Map-based cloning was conducted with simple sequence repeat (SSR) and insertion/deletion (InDel) markers. Candidate genes were annotated…

Pre- Versus Post-Breeding Population Projection Models? A Simple Fix to a Common Parametrization Error.

Population Projection Matrices (PPM) are discrete mathematical formulations of population growth that are key tools in demographic population studies, enabling the prediction of growth for populations structured with age, size, or other life stages. However, several studies have identified errors stemming from misconceptions related to survival and reproduction parameters, as well as confusion between post-breeding and pre-breeding in the case of Leslie matrices. The present work aims to propose a simple and robust method called Matrices Alternated Products (MAP) for reliably constructing PPM …

Behavioral smearing and physiological secretions drive divergent microbiome assembly during breeding in the crested ibis.

Host-microbiota interactions represent a key axis in animal adaptation, especially in species displaying pronounced seasonal variation in behavior and physiology. In avian species, behavioral processes associated with reproduction may influence symbiotic microbial communities, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly resolved. The endangered crested ibis ( Nipponia nippon) exhibits a distinctive seasonal transition in plumage coloration, shifting from white in the non-breeding period to gray during breeding, a change linked to smearing behavior and deposition of black secretions from the ne…

Morphological characterization of spermatogenesis and spermatogonial stem cells in Larimichthys crocea, a seasonal breeding teleost†.

Seasonal spermatogenesis in fish is a complex and highly regulated process in which spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) undergo a series of cellular changes to differentiate into mature sperm. In this study, we systematically described testicular development and identified thirteen different germ cell types throughout the reproductive cycle in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), a commercially important marine cultured fish in East Asia. Using a set of specific antibodies (VASA, PCNA, DMC1, NANOS2 and GSDF), we developed a high-throughput immunohistochemistry method to identify different

Effects of seminal plasma cholesterol and androgen levels on breeding rooster sperm motility in vitro.

Cholesterol and androgens play key roles in sperm maturation, capacitation, and fertilization ability. Thus, they influence sperm motility and stability, which are important indicators of male fertility. Their effects on the reproductive ability of roosters, however, remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of seminal plasma cholesterol and steroid hormone levels on sperm motility in breeding roosters and clarify the associated mechanisms. Using semen from Yufen 1 rooster breeders, high motility group (HMG) and low motility group (LMG) models were established and ther…

Aptamer-based selective enrichment of X and Y sperm: A new frontier in livestock breeding.

Sperm sexing, separation of X- and Y- sperm, has long been a priority in livestock breeding to selectively enhance female or male offspring production. While flow cytometry remains the only validated technique, its low fertilization efficiency limits widespread adoption. Aptamers, single-stranded oligonucleotides with high specificity and affinity, offer a promising alternative for sperm sexing by targeting distinct surface markers on X- or Y-bearing sperm. In this study, we generated aptamers specific to X and Y sperm and employed a streptavidin-based magnetic separation method for sperm enri…

Migration to breeding areas by male sperm whales Physeter macrocephalus from the Northeast Atlantic Arctic.

Mature male sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) primarily inhabit high latitude regions, travelling to tropical/temperate waters for breeding, where females and juveniles reside in cohesive social groups. Though mating is known to occur at low latitudes, the timing, duration, and routes of adult male migrations between feeding and breeding areas are poorly known. To study movement patterns of adult male sperm whales, 29 individuals were equipped with satellite transmitters in the Northeast Atlantic Arctic (69-79°N). Twelve of these animals undertook southward migrations. Departures from nort…

Melatonin treatment during the breeding season increases testosterone in male green anole lizards (Anolis carolinensis).

Melatonin is a natural hormone that regulates seasonal behaviors in vertebrates by binding to its receptors (MT1 and MT2). Specifically, high levels of melatonin are associated with short photoperiods, often coinciding with the non-breeding season, meaning that melatonin may inhibit seasonal reproduction. Green anole lizards (Anolis carolinensis), have large, active gonads, increased levels of testosterone and estradiol, and increased reproductive behaviors during the breeding season. Previous studies have examined the role of melatonin in seasonal reproduction in this species, but it is uncle…
