Poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a cervical bronchial cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts with malignant change are rarely reported. We describe a case of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a cervical bronchial cyst in a patient presenting with a thyroid mass, cervical lymphadenopathy, and initial biopsy suggestive of papillary thyroid carcinoma. The clinical presentation, intraoperative findings, radiographic images, and pathology slides are presented. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a bronchial cyst in the cervical region.

An asymptomatic mediastinal cyst in a young child: Case report and summary of the literature.

Bronchogenic cyst is a rare congenital chest malformation that mainly presents with wheeze and feeding issues in early life. A multidisciplinary approach and follow-up are pivotal for the improvement of lung function, mostly in cases of mediastinal complications.

Congenital lung lesions--underlying molecular mechanisms.

Congenital lung lesions comprise a broad spectrum of rare but clinically significant developmental abnormalities, including congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, bronchopulmonary sequestrations, congenital lobar emphysema, and bronchogenic cysts, which are commonly surgically treated. Although the terms congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, bronchopulmonary sequestrations, congenital lobar emphysema, and bronchogenic cysts are entrenched in clinical usage and comfortably correspond to rigid pathologic definitions, there is a considerable overlap in the findings. Disregarding the co…

Gastric foregut cystic developmental malformation: case series and literature review.

Foregut cystic developmental malformation (FCDM) is a very rare lesion of the alimentary tract, especially in the stomach. We discuss the concepts of gastric duplication cyst, bronchogenic cysts, and FCDM. Nomenclature has been inconsistent and confusing, but, by some definitions, gastric duplication cysts involve gastric mucosa and submucosal glands, bronchogenic cysts involve respiratory mucosa with underlying cartilage and glands, and FCDM lacks gastric mucosa or underlying glands or cartilage but has pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium (PCCE). We searched our departmental case fi…

Thoracoscopic resection of foregut duplication cysts.

BACKGROUND: Foregut duplications are rare entities that include both esophageal and bronchogenic cysts. The diagnosis of foregut duplication cyst is made most often from an incidental finding on chest radiograph, or due to respiratory compromise due to mass effect or infection. Treatment consists of complete resection. Recurrences are associated with incomplete resection. Six cases of foregut duplication cysts are presented that were resected thoracoscopically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From May 1998 to April 2003, six patients underwent thoracoscopy for resection of foregut duplication cyst. On…

Diagnosis and management of congenital cystic disease of the lung in children.

Pulmonary sequestration, congenital adenomatoid malformation (CAM), congenital lobar overinflation (CLO), and bronchogenic cysts are four congenital lesions that may present as abnormal cystic areas within the pleural cavity in early life. They share similar clinical and embryologic characteristics, are frequently difficult to diagnose, and all require surgical treatment. From December 1974 to January 1985, 22 patients were operated upon on the Pediatric Surgical Service for congenital cystic disease of the lung. There were eight females and 14 males, ranging in age from 1 day to 18 years; 12 …

Pulmonary sequestration: six unusual presentations.

In a review of 26 cases of sequestration, six patients with unusual radiographic features are described in detail. Three children had congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease was suspected. One patient with a cystic upper lobe sequestration was thought to have a pneumatocele or infected cyst. In two other cases the sequestrations had features of a solid mass lesion. One of these was erroneously diagnosed as a mesothelioma or bronchogenic cyst, and the other as a carcinoma.

Cystic thymomas and thymic cysts. A review.

Six cases of large thymic cyst are described; five were cystic thymomas and one was nonneoplastic. Two of the thymomas were not only grossly degenerate but showed severe chronic inflammatory change, so that the diagnosis might be missed. The classification of cysts into congenital, inflammatory, and neoplastic groups is discussed. Cystic teratomata of the thymus, lymphatic cysts, and bronchogenic cysts are classed separately since thymic location does not affect their natural history. Cystic thymomas are still not well known clinically, and the literature on the subject is reviewed. It is prob…

Huge Primary Pleural Cyst Mimicking an Exophytic Echinococcal Cyst: A Case Report.

A 58-year-old woman presented with an incidental asymptomatic mass occupying the entire right lower thorax. A radiologic study demonstrated a huge cystic mass, initially suggestive of an exophytic echinococcal cyst. After unsuccessful catheter drainage, the patient was referred for surgery, and curative resection of the lung-, heart-, and diaphragm-compressing mass was performed under video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Culture studies revealed no growth of parasitic, bacterial, or fungal infections, and the final pathological result confirmed a primary pleural cyst. Thoracic cystic masses m

Non-Neoplastic Mediastinal Cysts.

Primary mediastinal cysts are infrequent lesions that can arise from a variety of mediastinal organs or structures. Most of these are congenital in origin and incidental findings during investigations for unrelated conditions. Histologically, the cysts may be composed of various tissues, including bronchogenic, pericardial, thymic, enteric, Müllerian, lymphatic, and parathyroid types. Mediastinal cysts typically demonstrate a benign clinical course and patients are cured after complete surgical resection. In this review, the embryogenesis, clinical, radiologic, and pathologic characteristics o

Foregut cyst of the oesophageal wall in a cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

Congenital oesophageal cysts of foregut origin are rare in animals and human beings. This report describes a case in a 4-year-old cynomolgus … cyst lumen and the oesophagus was observed. Cartilaginous tissue, which is a diagnostic feature of bronchogenic cysts, was not identified in the cyst wall. On the basis of the histopathological features, a foregut cyst of the oesophagus was diagnosed.

Congenital cystic neck masses: embryology and imaging appearances, with clinicopathological correlation.

Congenital cystic masses of the neck are uncommon and can present in any age group. Diagnosis of these lesions can be sometimes challenging. Many of these have characteristic locations and imaging findings. The most common of all congenital cystic neck masses is the thyroglossal duct cyst. The other congenital cystic neck masses are branchial cleft cyst, cystic hygroma (lymphangioma), cervical thymic and bronchogenic cysts, and the floor of the mouth lesions including dermoid and epidermoid cysts. In this review, we illustrate the common congenital cystic neck masses including embryology, clin…

Esophageal duplication cyst associated with pulmonary cystic malformations.

Two cases of esophageal duplication cyst associated with pulmonary cystic malformations (cystic bronchiectasis with pneumonia in one, intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts with bronchial atresia in the other) are reported. The coexistence of these complex anomalies supports the recognition that esophageal duplication cyst also is an entity of a broad spectrum of developmental abnormalities caused by abnormal budding of the primitive foregut. Nine cases of similar complex anomalies in the lung and esophagus have been reported. Although rare, this malformation complex should be borne in mind in the …

Müllerian Cysts of the Posterior Mediastinum: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Cysts can be segregated according to their embryonic backgrounds. The cysts that were found in the mediastinum are usually divided into bronchogenic cysts, enteric cysts, esophageal cysts, and nonspecific cysts. We add to the relatively small body of literature that exists on this topic by reporting a case of a Müllerian cyst occurring in the posterior mediastinum of a 60-year-old female, showing diffuse nuclear positivity for estrogen receptor (ER) and PAX-8. We examined and summarized the findings of the unique reported cases in the literature. Lastly, an institutional retrospective review o…

[Mediastinal parathyroid cyst - a case report].

The most common causes of mediastinal masses are thymomas, lymphomas and neuromas. Mediastinal cysts, such as bronchogenic cysts, which are usually benign, are less common. We report the case of a 59-year-old woman with a history of progressive dysphagia. A computed tomography scan revealed a cystic lesion in the anterior mediastinum. The cyst was surgically resected and turned out to be a benign parathyroid cyst. The patient's symptoms disappeared after surgical removal. Both the serum calcium and parathyroid hormone levels were normal before, and after surgery. Parathyroid cysts are rare les…

Uniportal video-assisted removal of a right paratracheal pericardial cyst: an unusual location.

Cystic lesions of the pericardium are a rare entity. Generally, they are congenital and located in the cardiophrenic angle. The right paratracheal location is unusual and differential diagnosis in particular with bronchogenic cyst is difficult even when using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The surgical indication exists in case of symptomatic patients or huge mass with compression of nearby structures. Different surgical approaches have been reported in literature to treat mediastinal cysts. We report a case of uniportal thoracoscopic removal of an unusual located right paratracheal pericar…

Parenchymal cysts of the lower neck.

We report on the appearance of parathyroid, thyroid, and cervical thymic cysts on computed tomography (CT) scans. The differential diagnostic considerations include thyroglossal and branchial cleft cysts, cystic hygromas, primary and metastatic tumors, dermoids, teratomas, choristomas, tracheoesophageal and cervical bronchogenic cysts, as well as cystic neuromas, abscesses, and lipomas. Most cannot be differentiated using CT alone and require clinical observations, laboratory testing, and surgical and histologic findings for definitive diagnosis. Our experience with these rare lesions is repor…
