Whole genome sequencing of Bacillus anthracis isolated from animal in the 1960s, Brazil, belonging to the South America subclade.

Bacillus anthracis causes anthrax disease and can affect humans and other animals. This zoonotic disease has an impact on the economic and health aspects. B. anthracis population is divided into three major clades: A (with worldwide distribution), B, and C (restricted to specific regions). Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions of central and southwestern Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Southern and Eastern Europe, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Here, we sequenced by short and long reads technologies to generate a hybrid assembly of a lineage of B. anthracis recovered from ani

Migration in French Guiana: Implications in health and infectious diseases.

In French Guiana, more than a third of the population, and nearly half of the adults, are of foreign origin. This immigration is explained by the French standard of living, which is attractive to nationals of surrounding countries. Infectious diseases remain in the top 10 causes of premature death, often in the most precarious populations. In this context we aimed to synthesize the state of the knowledge regarding immigration and infectious diseases in French Guiana and the general implications that follow this diagnosis. For HIV, although the majority of patients are of foreign origin, estima

Poison Apple-like Fruit Ingestion: A Case Report and Review of Manchineel Fruit Toxicity.

Manchineel dermatitis, caused by the sap of the manchineel tree native to the coastlands of the Caribbean, West Africa, and Central America, has received limited attention in the literature despite significant morbidity. The toxic sap causes a burning, blistering rash and conjunctivitis, while ingestion of the fruit may lead to oropharyngeal pain, hemodynamic instability, and gastrointestinal distress. Tourists unfamiliar with the manchineel tree may be exposed through exposure to the tree's sap, contaminated rainwater, or ingestion of the apple-like fruit. We herein present a case of a patien

Ciguatera fish poisoning in Brazilian traveler to Caribbean.

Ciguatera poisoning is the most common form of non-bacterial food-poisoning from fish worldwide. The incidence among Brazilians returning from high-risk regions is unclear because it is not a mandatory reportable disease. We describe a previously healthy 53-year-old Brazilian woman developed Ciguatera fish poisoning while traveling to Havana, Cuba. Physicians and health care professionals should advise travelers to avoid eating ciguatoxic fish species and potentially toxic fish species in the Caribbean islands. Despite the prognosis for most cases is good with a short duration of self-limited

West Nile virus in the Americas.

Since the first detection of West Nile virus in the Western Hemisphere in 1999, the virus has spread rapidly across the North American continent and as far south as Argentina. An unprecedented pattern of large annual epidemics of human neuroinvasive disease continues in North America, resulting in considerable public health impact. The high infection incidence in humans has resulted in non-mosquito transmission modes, such as through transfused blood and transplanted organs. West Nile virus incursion into Latin America and the Caribbean Islands has resulted in surprisingly low human, avian, an

Predicted altitudinal shifts and reduced spatial distribution of Leishmania infantum vector species under climate change scenarios in Colombia.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by the trypanosomatid parasite Leishmania infantum (=Leishmania chagasi), and is epidemiologically relevant due to its wide geographic distribution, the number of annual cases reported and the increase in its co-infection with HIV. Two vector species have been incriminated in the Americas: Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia evansi. In Colombia, L. longipalpis is distributed along the Magdalena River Valley while L. evansi is only found in the northern part of the Country. Regarding the epidemiology of the disease, in Colombia the incidence of VL has decre

Trends in colorectal cancer mortality among younger vs older adults in 49 countries.

Increases in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence among young adults were reported in 27 countries and territories worldwide, yet information on mortality trends is limited. Using the World Health Organization Mortality database (1990-2023), we found CRC mortality rates among younger adults (aged 25-49 years) increased in 18 of 49 countries (0.7%-4.3% per year) during the most recent decade, decreased in 15, and were otherwise stable. Trends ranged from decreases of more than 2% per year in Singapore, Belgium, and Denmark to increases of more than 3% per year in Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, and the

Rare variants in embryonic development and cell signalling genes in syndromic and non-syndromic orofacial clefts: evidence from a Colombian Caribbean cohort.

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are common craniofacial malformations broadly classified as syndromic or non-syndromic. While syndromic OFCs are often caused by rare, high-impact variants, non-syndromic OFCs are typically associated with multiple low-impact common variants. However, growing evidence suggests that rare variants may also contribute to non-syndromic OFCs. To explore this, we performed exome sequencing in 45 individuals from 20 Colombian families, predominantly from the Caribbean region, a genetically distinct and underrepresented population. Our goal was to identify rare variants potenti…

Avian Aquatic Reservoirs and Zoonotic Potential of Helicobacter spp. in Wetlands from the Southern Caribbean Sea.

Helicobacter species are increasingly recognized in environmental reservoirs, yet their prevalence and diversity in tropical wetland ecosystems remain poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, distribution, and diversity of Helicobacter spp. in a tropical wetland ecosystem, specifically within the Cuare Wildlife Refuge, Venezuela, focusing on waterbirds and associated aquatic matrices. We collected samples from avian faeces, water, plankton, oysters, soils, and microbial mats during two periods (October/2011 and March/2012). Analysis involved culture in HP selective medium,

Prevalence and clinical significance of the rare HOXB13 X285K variant in a French Caribbean prostate cancer cohort.

BACKGROUND: The HOXB13 gene has been associated with hereditary prostate cancer (PCa), with rare germline variants linked to early-onset and aggressive forms of the disease. While the G84E variant has been well-characterized in Caucasian populations, the clinical relevance of the X285K variant-primarily found in individuals of African ancestry-remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of HOXB13 X285K in a French Caribbean cohort and explore its association with adverse clinical features. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study including 465 men diagnosed with pros

Breaking barriers: A qualitative study exploring the social and cultural factors that influence HIV awareness and uptake of HIV prevention among women of African and Caribbean heritage in England.

BACKGROUND: There have been impressive advancements made in preventing and treating HIV. However, the impacts have not been experienced equally across demographics in England. African born persons, in particular women of Black African ethnicity, continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. HIV prevention campaigns have often overlooked social, cultural, and structural factors that shape access to HIV prevention. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores how women of African and Caribbean heritage understand HIV within their social networks, and how they perceive HIV and sexual health services. Th

Toxicity of crude organic extracts from the zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum: A biogeography approach.

Marine isolates such as palytoxin (PTX) are of concern within the Caribbean region due to their toxicity. PTX for example has been described as a one of the most known potent marine toxins, known to prevent predation from larger species (e.g. vertebrates) as well as the prevention of being overgrown from other coral species. PTX is a polyhydroxylated polyether toxin with a very large and complex chemical structure that possesses both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. Previous acute toxicity tests using brine shrimp (Artemia salina) and PTX extract had shown it to be moderately toxic. In h…

Absence of sympathetic overactivity in Afro-Caribbean hypertensive subjects studied by heart rate variability.

Black hypertensives present a greater prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy and an increased mortality compared to white hypertensives. Differences in sympathetic activity might contribute to explain these racial differences in hypertension. Nevertheless, previous laboratory studies did not show any increase of sympathetic activity direct to the heart in black subjects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the cardiac sympatho-vagal balance in black and white hypertensives analysing heart rate variability, during the entire 24 h. We analysed Holter recordings of 52 essential hy
