BACKGROUND: Current diagnostic tests are inadequate to detect typhoid cases, as well as the chronic carrier state, the sole reservoir of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. The current study was conducted to find new molecular signatures of pathogen/disease to understand the mechanism behind the host-pathogen interaction in enteric fever.
METHODS: Proteomics-based studies were done to determine the expression of differentially expressed proteins in the plasma of controls, acute typhoid cases, and chronic typhoid carriers. Further, transcriptome-based analysis using reverse-transcriptase PCR (R…

OBJECTIVE: Since previous studies indicate that metabolism is altered in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS), we undertook this study to determine if changes in the genome-wide chromatin and DNA states in genes associated with nutrient transporters could help to identify activated metabolic pathways in RA FLS.
METHODS: Data from a previous comprehensive epigenomic study in FLS were analyzed to identify differences in genome-wide states and gene transcription between RA and osteoarthritis. We utilized the single nearest genes to regions of interest for pathway analyses

The immunofluorescence test with the use of antisera to S. typhi and its L-forms permits the detection of the infective agent in bone marrow smears. This diagnostic method is particularly important in cases of carrier state in the latent phase and in differential diagnosis. As revealed in this study, the microbial variants of S. typhi, reacting with antiserum to its L-forms, are present in the bone marrow of carriers. They are localized, as a rule, on the membranes of lymphoid and erythroid cells, which probably leads to the formation of rosettes.

A combination of transient absorption (TA) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopies performed on solution-phase samples of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) allows the construction of a time-resolved, charge carrier-resolved map of decay from the first excitonic state of the QD. Data from TA and TRPL yield the same six exponential components, with time constants ranging from ∼1 ps to 50 ns, for excitonic decay. Comparison of TA signals in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions enables determination of the relative contributions of electron and hole dynamics to ea

AIM: Study of features of interaction of bacteria in microsymbiocenoses of upper respiratory tract in dynamics in individuals with various state of health: healthy individuals, individuals after tonsillitis and bacteria carriers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Modification of pathogenicity factors (hemolytic, lecitovitellase, lysozyme and anti-lysozyme activity) in intermicrobial interactions of 226 strains of microorganisms isolated during quintuple analysis of upper respiratory tract biocenoses of examined individuals was studied. A hierarchical structure of each microbiocenosis was built based on

BACKGROUND: Information on transmission of meningococcal infection in the African meningitis belt is scarce. We aimed to describe transmission patterns of Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) in households in the African meningitis belt.
METHODS: Cross-sectional carriage surveys were done in seven African meningitis belt countries (Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal) between Aug 1, 2010, and Oct 15, 2012. Meningococcal carriers identified in these surveys and all available people in their households were recruited into this longitudinal cohort study. We took pharyngeal

This paper has presented information concerning the degree of hepatitis B infection in the dental profession. This disease is being transmitted from patients to dentists, dental staff members, and their families by both percutaneous and nonpercutaneous routes. Only one of five infections is clinically diagnosed, deeming the patient's medical history an unreliable indication of potential infectivity. All members of the dental profession are at a risk at least three times higher than the general population of contracting this disease and developing the carrier state. Unfortunately, as undiagnose…

Autosomal recessive diseases, such as cystic fibrosis (CF), require inheritance of 2 mutated genes. However, some studies indicate that CF c … here are more than 10 million carriers in the US, population-level morbidity attributable to the CF carrier state is likely substantial. Genetic testing may inform prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for a broad range of CF carrier-related conditions.

A zoonotic disease is transmissible from vertebrate animals to humans. This article focuses on pertinent zoonotic diseases that have to be taken into consideration when working with nonhuman primate (NHP) species. Many factors may influence the occurrence of these diseases. Human and NHPs share many similarities, not only anatomically but also physiologically. NHP are valuable models for many human infectious diseases; therefore, staff can be exposed to many potential pathogens. In general, the disease state of a primate can range from asymptomatic carrier to death from infection.
