The aim of this study was to determine the impact of barium sulfate on remodeling and regeneration in standard tibial defects in rabbits treated with the Norian skeletal repair system (SRS). Two formulations of SRS (with and without barium sulfate) were injected into the medullary canal of the tibia of New Zealand white rabbits. We report a case of a 60-year-old woman who reported a popping sound in her left ear, induced by changes in pressure, since she pulled her index finger out of her ear canal after accidentally inserting it while washing her hair. Otoscopic examination revealed a wrinkled tympanic membrane and irregular malleus handle. An isolated malleus-handle fracture resulting from barotrauma was suspected. QUESTION: Can the same levels of pain reduction and increase in function be achieved in kyphoplasty procedures with Calcibon as with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a prospective, interdisciplinary single-center study, 99 patients (173 vertebral fractures) were treated with kyphoplasty. Augmentation was performed with PMMA in 66 cases (127 vertebral bodies) and with Calcibon in 33 patients (46 vertebral bodies). A 71-year old patient with a history of minimal periodontal attachment loss presented with an asymptomatic, non-bleeding, isolated deep pocket on the mesio-facial of a central incisor. Such localized, deep pockets are most frequently associated with a root fracture or an abscess, but in this case an atypical ledge-like projection determined to be a cemental tear was detected at the base of the 6 mm pocket.
