PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Radical resection of a vertebra is reserved only for specific tumors that invade the surrounding tissues and recur when not removed completely. The vertebra may be removed using a piecemeal technique or en bloc, using only two (in thoracolumbar spine) or more osteotomies (in cervical spine). We present our technique of en bloc resection of subaxial cervical vertebra for Ewing's sarcoma of C3, with preservation of all nerve roots and both vertebral arteries. To our knowledge, this surgical technique has not been reported in the English literature. The aim of this study is

Fibrous dysplasia, in either monostotic or poliostotic form rarely involves the cervical spine. Most of these lesions remain asymptomatic and are incidental radiographic findings. A symptomatic case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia involving the first, second and third cervical vertebra with potentially serious consequences is presented. A 53-year old woman who had shown cervical myelopathy for about 3 month was diagnosed as having cervical dysplasia on the basis of plain x-ray and CT scanning. In addition, atlanto-axial instability causing clinical symptoms was detected. A dorsal stabilisatio

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: Determine the indications, complications, and clinical outcomes in patients requiring fusions from the cervical spine to the pelvis. Several investigators have examined fusions from the thoracic spine to the sacrum, but no similar study has been performed for cervical-to-pelvis fusions.
METHODS: Patients from 2003 to 2014 with an upper instrumented vertebrae (UIV) in the cervical spine (any level) and a lower instrumented vertebrae (LIV) in the sacrum or pelvis were included in the study. Those with infectious or acute trauma-related defor

INTRODUCTION: Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is considered a rare developmental disorder characterized by mono- or multisegmental fusion of the cervical vertebrae which is frequently associated with diverse non-osseous, e.g. neural, visceral, cardiopulmonary and genitourinary development anomalies. Anterior cervical meningomyelocele (MMC) in KFS has only been described in two previous patients, both with non-surgical treatment.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 26-year-old female suffering from KFS, presenting with progressive bilateral C6 paraesthesias, C7 and C8 motor weakness an…

Klippel-FEIL syndrome is a congenital skeletal malformation characterised by the fusion of various cervical and occasionally thoracic vertebrae, leading to low hair line and short neck. Occasionally it is associated with hearing loss and Sprengel deformity with winging of scapulae. This case is being reported for its rarity.

We present a family in which five members over three generations have a syndrome characterized by camptodactyly, flattened bodies of cervical vertebrae, and a variable degree of thoracic scoliosis. After excluding other camptodactyly syndromes, it was concluded that this association of anomalies probably represents a new autosomal dominant syndrome.

In order to improve the slope movement stability and flexibility of quadruped robot, a theoretical design method of a flexible spine of a robot that was based on bionics was proposed. The kinematic characteristics of the spine were analyzed under different slopes with a Saanen goat as the research object. A Qualisys track manager (QTM) gait analysis system was used to obtain the trunk movement of goats under multiple slopes, and linear time normalization (LTN) was used to calibrate and match typical gait cycles to characterize the goat locomotion gait under slopes. Firstly, the spatial angle c

Variation of vertebral centra numbers is common in vertebrates. Likewise, the number of associated elements such as ribs and neural and haemal arches can vary and affect all regions of the vertebral column. In mammals, only the number of cervical vertebrae is invariable. Variation of total vertebral centra numbers is well documented in teleost fish, often related to temperature. Less information is available about which part of the vertebral column and which associated elements are liable to variation. Here, variation in number of vertebral centra and associated elements is studied in Chinook …

We report three patients who developed delayed (ie, more than a week after the injury) symptoms of vertebrobasilar ischemia following motor vehicle accidents. The patients all had angiographic evidence of vertebral artery dissection and, upon further evaluation, occult fractures of the second cervical vertebra that were not detected by simple cervical spine radiography and required polytomography or CT for diagnosis. Vertebral artery dissection can result from occult cervical spine fractures and may present with delayed symptoms of brain ischemia.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rare, complex syndrome characterized by abnormal fusion of cervical vertebrae. This case highlights the effectiveness of conservative management in KFS patients without neurological deficits. We reported the case of an 18-year-old Iraqi male presenting a short neck, low back hairline, winged right scapula, and scoliosis after physical examination and deformities of cervical spine fusion, kyphoscoliosis and Sprengel's deformity after imaging tests. Clinical and radiological diagnosis shows KFS. After conservative treatment-including a corrective collar, cervical…

BACKGROUND: Traumatic fractures of the cervical spine pose significant challenges in management, particularly in young patients, where preserving mobility is crucial.
PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS: A 30-year-old woman presented with a C3 lateral mass and pedicle fracture following a motor vehicle collision. Initial conservative management with a rigid cervical collar for three months failed to reduce the diastasis, and the debilitating neck pain worsened. Preoperative imaging confirmed fracture instability without spinal cord compression.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: Preoperative screw trajectory pla

Simultaneous fracture of the maxilla and cervical vertebrae rarely occurs in bicycling accidents. The following case report describes a simple technique for closed reduction of a severely comminuted maxillary fracture with shattering of the dentoalveolar process. The combination of a rigid external distractor halo frame on the skull, a Kirschner wire through the maxilla, and an intermaxillary wire fixation resulted in stable vertical and sagittal correction of the fragmented maxilla with adequate access and minimal manipulation and without necessitating removal of the cervical collar.

A case is reported of the so-called Tethered Cervical Spinal Cord Syndrome presenting as multiradicular pain on an upper limb in a 45-year old woman, in whom spina bifida occulta (C6) was associated with an intramedullary lipoma, intradural fibrous adhesions and the fusion of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae. Surgical release of the tether was ineffective, and the patient underwent a posterior rhizotomy for pain relief. The clinical and maldevelopmental aspects of this most uncommon form of spinal cord tethering are discussed briefly.

A brown tumor is one of the manifestations of hyperparathyroidism. It is a rare type of bone lesion that most often occurs in mandible, ribs, and large bones. Spinal involvement is extremely rare. We report an unusual case of a brown tumor of the axis vertebra in a 33-year-old male who presented to the orthopaedic clinic with posttraumatic C2 vertebra fracture and myelopathy. To plan further fixation and stabilization of C2 fracture, the patient underwent a plain radiograph and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine. The available routine chest radiograph at the time of MRI rep

It has been reported that flexibility of the neck decreases after cervical laminoplasty. It also is known that kyphosis can be an unfavorable result after posterior decompression surgery of the cervical spine. To examine whether a decrease in cervical mobility resulting from contracture of the cervical spine helps prevent postoperative kyphotic alignment, changes in radiographic findings after cervical expansive laminoplasty were evaluated. There was a strong correlation postoperatively between range of motion of the cervical spine and cervical lordotic alignment, namely, the more that cervica

Anterior cervical osteophytes are excessive bony formation of cervical vertebra bodies. They are common but rarely symptomatic lesions mostly seen in geriatric population. Large anterior cervical osteophytes may cause symptoms such as dysphagia, dyspnea, dysphonia, and odynophagia. They have been attributed to multiple etiologies including diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, following trauma, cervical spondylitis, and infectious spondylitis. However, symptomatic large anterior cervical osteophyte with ankylosing spondylitis is extremely rare. Surgical excision is the main treatment for s
