BACKGROUND: Parasitic protozoans, helminths, alter the gut microbiota in mammals, yet little is known about the influence of intestinal cestodes on gut microbiota in fish. In the present study, the composition and diversity of the hindgut microbiota were determined in the intestine of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) infected with two tapeworm species, Khawia japonensis and Atractolytocestus tenuicollis.
RESULTS: The intestine contained a core microbiota composed of Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria and Tenericutes. Infection with the two cestode species had no significant effect on the microbial div

Progressive expansion of the most hazardous human parasitoses caused by trematodes, cestodes and nematodes has been found on the south of the Russian Far East. Decelerating expansion of the trematode Clonorchis sinensis, an agent of clonorchiasis towards the southern Primorye Territory from the Amur River basin, that began 10-15 years ago, was revealed. A prognosis was made on the activation of the natural foci of clonorchiasis and paragonimiasis. Circulation possibilities are discussed of the highly pathogenic trematode Pagonimus heterotremusar in the South Asian regional ecosystems. Our expe

Ligula intestinalis is a tapeworm using copepods and cyprinid fish as intermediate hosts and fish-eating birds as final hosts. Since some parasites can increase their own fitness by manipulating the behavior of the intermediate host, we explored if this parasite affected predator avoidance, swimming activity and depth preference of the fish intermediate host, Engraulicypris sardella. We found that when L. intestinalis had reached a developmental stage that is able to establish in the bird host, it had a significant impact on E. sardella behavior, while the tapeworm that was not fully developed

Parasites can be a major cause of natural selection on hosts, which consequently evolve a variety of strategies to avoid, eliminate, or tolerate infection. When ecologically similar host populations present disparate infection loads, this natural variation can reveal immunological strategies underlying adaptation to infection and population divergence. For instance, the tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus persistently infects 0-80% of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in lakes on Vancouver Island. To test whether these heterogeneous infection rates result from evolved differences in

Trophically transmitted parasites must trade-off own growth on one hand and energy drain from the intermediate host on the other hand, since killing the host before transmission to the next host is a dead end for both parasites and hosts. This challenge becomes especially intriguing when multiple parasites find themselves within the same individual host. The tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus may gain more than 98% of its final body mass within few months infecting its three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) intermediate host. During these months the tapeworms may achieve a mass even l

Metacestodes, the larval stages of canid cestode parasites, are among the causes of morbidity, mortality and financial losses in small ruminants in Ethiopia as a result of organ and carcass condemnation at slaughter. Several studies have been conducted over the years; however, these studies often had limited scope and coverage. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to collate the information so far available in order to provide a pooled prevalence estimate at national level and identify potential predictors. Published and grey literature written in English and Amharic in the p

This review brings together decades of work on elasmobranch tapeworms. The field has advanced significantly over the past 20 yr, with an emphasis on the discovery and description of novel taxa, and the establishment of phylogenetic frameworks for individual orders and their interrelationships. Tapeworms parasitizing elasmobranchs represent 9 orders and include 977 species and 201 genera-over 250 species and 50 genera are new within the last 2 decades. The 9 orders are treated individually, highlighting recent assessments of phylogenetic relationships informed by molecular sequence data. All bu

In an observational study, three different treatment schedules with praziquantel were assessed in a Merino land sheep flock from southern Germany. The herd had a known history of severe recurrent Moniezia spp. infections. After turnout to pasture, three hundred lambs between 8 and 14 weeks old were weighed and randomly allocated to three different groups. They were treated with praziquantel (Cestocur®) at a dose of 3.75 mg/kg body weight using the following schedules: group 1 treated four times at monthly intervals (Days 1, 31, 59, 91); group 2 treated three times at six-week intervals (Days 1

This study was undertaken to compare 2 species of Tetraphyllidea and 2 species of Trypanorhyncha with regard to the relationship between attachment structure morphology, mode of attachment, and tapeworm size, to damage at the sites of attachment in the Atlantic nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum. Regions of the spiral intestine with worms attached were removed from 8 nurse sharks and sectioned according to conventional techniques. Sections of 5-50 specimens of each tapeworm species were examined. Regions of the spiral intestine devoid of worms were processed for characterization of the normal

BACKGROUND: The metacestode larva of Echinococcus multilocularis (Cestoda: Taeniidae) develops in the liver of intermediate hosts (typically rodents, or accidentally in humans) as a labyrinth of interconnected cysts that infiltrate the host tissue, causing the disease alveolar echinococcosis. Within the cysts, protoscoleces (the infective stage for the definitive canid host) arise by asexual multiplication. These consist of a scolex similar to that of the adult, invaginated within a small posterior body. Despite the importance of alveolar echinococcosis for human health, relatively little is k…

BACKGROUND: In the Canary Islands there are no previous data about tapeworms (Cestoda) of rodents. In order to identify the hymenolepidid species present in these hosts, a survey of 1,017 murine (349 Rattus rattus, 13 Rattus norvegicus and 655 Mus musculus domesticus) was carried out in the whole Archipelago. Molecular studies based on nuclear ITS1 and mitochondrial COI loci were performed to confirm the identifications and to analyse the levels of genetic variation and differentiation.
RESULTS: Three species of hymenolepidids were identified: Hymenolepis diminuta, Rodentolepis microstoma and…

Social insects are key models for phenotypic plasticity, as queens and workers show striking differences in behaviour and lifespan despite sharing the same genome. Neuropeptides are central regulators of behavioural plasticity, and caste-specific ageing is governed by the insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 signalling-target of rapamycin-juvenile hormone network. Parasites that manipulate host behaviour and lifespan may exploit these regulators by targeting conserved neuropeptides or by altering ageing pathways. Here, we examine a host-parasite system in which the cestode Anomotaenia brevis e

Rodent-borne cestodes of the genus Raillietina include several poorly characterized species with potential zoonotic relevance, yet their molecular identity, host–parasite interactions, and susceptibility to alternative anthelmintic agents remain inadequately understood. Here, we present an integrated morphological, ultrastructural, molecular, immunopathological, and experimental evaluation of Raillietina hymenolepidoides naturally infecting the fat sand rat (Psammomys obesus) in Egypt. Adult cestodes were identified using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and mitochondrial cytoch

Anoplocephala perfoliata, can cause severe health problems in horses. Standard coprological tests have performed poorly for detecting A. perfoliata, and while a centrifugation-enhanced flotation technique is superior to other techniques, it is time consuming due to three 10-minute centrifugation steps. This study aimed to evaluate modifications of this technique that reduce the centrifugation durations to 5 and 1 min, respectively. Fecal samples were collected from ten adult A. perfoliata egg count positive mares and divided into 9 subsamples to allow for three replicate counts for each of the

BACKGROUND: The management of helminthiasis remains a significant challenge in clinical and veterinary practice because the most important parasites have acquired extensive drug resistance in animal infections and reduced efficacy in human conditions. The toothache plant (Acmella oleracea) is a medicinal plant used in the Mizo traditional system of India for deworming intestinal parasites in both humans and domesticated animals. Therefore, it is important to understand the bioactive components and biological effects of the plant.
AIM: Experiments were set up to characterize the bioactive comp

Clestobothrium Lühe, 1899 is a genus of cestodes belonging to the order Bothriocephalidea, which infects marine fish from the Gadiformes order. Herein, a novel species of Clestobothrium is described from the intestine of the European hake Merluccius merluccius (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Ionian Sea (Eastern Mediterranean Sea), through an integrative taxonomic approach that combines morphological and molecular data. The new species, named Clestobothrium brettiae n. sp., can be distinguished from all congeners by its unique ovary shape, and a combination of characters including the arrangement and n
