Psychosocial interventions for children and adolescents in foster care: review of research literature.

Between one-half and three-fourths of children entering foster care exhibit behavioral or social-emotional problems warranting mental health care. This paper, condensed and updated from a technical report prepared for Casey Family Programs in 2005, reviews evidence-based and promising interventions for the most prevalent mental conditions found among children in foster care. This paper also makes several recommendations regarding increasing access to mental health care and effective psychosocial interventions for foster care children.

Latent Growth Modeling Trajectories of Cultural Values and Parental Monitoring as Predictors of Alcohol, Cigarette, and Drug Use Initiation Among Mexican-Origin Youth.

Substance use initiation during adolescence is a critical predictor of long-term dependency and adverse health outcomes, with Latino youth demonstrating disproportionately high rates of early use. This study examined how developmental trajectories of cultural values (CVs) and parental monitoring predict substance use initiation in a cohort of Mexican-origin youth followed from 5th to 11th grade. Data from the California Families Project (n = 674) were analyzed using latent growth modeling to assess the independent and combined influence of these trajectories on the odds of initiating alcohol,

Language Development in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children: An Ecological Systems Perspective.

Background: Language outcomes among DHH children are widely variable. Equally variable is the diversity of factors involved in fostering healthy language development in this population. Some DHH children use cochlear implants and hearing aids and reach expected milestones. Others exhibit delays, ranging from mild to severe. Regardless of how "success" is defined for individual children who use these technologies, recognizing the ecological contexts in which DHH children develop language, and the relationships among those contexts, can support the identification of contextual predictors and poi

Trust in medical professionals and its influence on the stress experience of parents of premature infants.

AIM: To examine parents' perceptions of stress and their trust in physicians and nursing staff and to investigate whether trust influences the parental perceptions of potential stressors resulting from their infant's hospitalisation in a neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: Parents of very and extremely low birth weight infants were surveyed in a nationwide retrospective cross-sectional study 6-18 months after their child's birth. Parental stress was measured utilising the PSS:NICU_German/2-scales, and trust was measured by the scales Trust in Physicians and Trust in Nursing Staff. In addit

Evaluating a Web-Based Application to Facilitate Family-School-Health Care Collaboration for Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Inclusive Settings: Protocol for a Nonrandomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: An individual education plan (IEP) is a key element in the support of the schooling of children with special educational needs or disabilities. The IEP process requires effective communication and strong partnership between families, school staff, and health care practitioners. However, these stakeholders often report their collaboration as limited and difficult to maintain, leading to difficulties in implementing and monitoring the child's IEP. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe the study protocol used to evaluate a technological tool (CoEd application) aiming at fostering co

Automatized analysis of children's exposure to child-directed speech in reschool settings: Validation and application.

The present study explored whether a tool for automatic detection and recognition of interactions and child-directed speech (CDS) in preschool classrooms could be developed, validated, and applied to non-coded video recordings representing children's classroom experiences. Using first-person video recordings collected by 13 preschool children during a morning in their classrooms, we extracted high-level audiovisual features from recordings using automatic speech recognition and computer vision services from a cloud computing provider. Using manual coding for interactions and transcriptions of

Perinatal outcomes and changes in the oral cavity: Brazilian cohorts of Ribeirão Preto and São Luís.

Studies have shown a possible association of oral diseases during pregnancy with preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW). These perinatal outcomes appear to be associated with enamel defects in the primary dentition, which, in turn, seem to predispose to future development of caries in children. Therefore it is relevant to include oral health variables of the mother/child dyad in cohort studies to understand how these factors are associated. The objectives of this study are: 1) check if there is an association between diseases of the oral cavity of pregnant women and PTB, 2) test the hy

Thermal protection of the newborn in resource-limited environments.

Appropriate thermal protection of the newborn prevents hypothermia and its associated burden of morbidity and mortality. Yet, current global birth practices tend to not adequately address this challenge. Here, we discuss the pathophysiology of hypothermia in the newborn, its prevention and therapeutic options with particular attention to resource-limited environments. Newborns are equipped with sophisticated mechanisms of body temperature regulation. Neonatal thermoregulation is a critical function for newborn survival, regulated in the hypothalamus and mediated by endocrine pathways. Hypother

Reproductive traits following a parent-child separation trauma during childhood: a natural experiment during World War II.

Given the ethical limitations of exposing children to experimentally manipulated adverse experiences, evidence of the effects of childhood traumas on subsequent life history are based mostly on women's retrospective reports and animal studies. Only a few prospective studies have assessed the life-long consequences of childhood trauma. We asked whether a traumatic separation from both parents during childhood is associated with reproductive and marital traits later in life, measured by age of onset of menarche, timing of menopause, period of fertile years, age at first childbirth, birth spacing

Participation and Experiences in Extracurricular Activities for Children With Developmental Language Disorder and Their Peers.

OBJECTIVES: Participation in organised extracurricular social activities (OESAs) can provide wide-ranging positive developmental benefits for children. This study investigated whether participation and experiences differ for children aged 4- to 12-years with a developmental language disorder (DLD) compared to their typical language developing (TLD) peers. METHODS: Parents of children with DLD (n = 18) and those of TLD peers (n = 21) reflected on their child's participation and experiences in OESAs. RESULTS: Results demonstrated that parents of children with DLD reported engagement in a simil

"You're the child I never wanted": an interpretative phenomenological analysis about the invisible struggle of families in crisis raising a child with persistent and severe regulatory problems.

BACKGROUND: Infant regulatory problems (RP), such as sleeping disturbances, feeding difficulties and excessive crying, affect a significant number of families and can persist beyond typical developmental stages, leading to distress for both the child and parents. These challenges disrupt the co-regulatory bond between parent and infant, often resulting in mutual dysregulation, parental burnout, and strained family relationships. Sociocultural values in Western societies, combined with conflicting role expectations, can contribute to heightened parental stress. Despite growing recognition of in

The genetic assessment of looked after children: common reasons for referral and recent advances.

Looked after children are recognised as generally having greater health needs than their peers. There are numerous potential causes, environmental and genetic, and the aetiology is often multifactorial. Assessments, especially clinical genetic ones, may be limited if the information available is incomplete or not shared. There have been some exciting recent advances in diagnostic genetic testing and more are on the horizon. However, we are currently only able to make a genetic diagnosis in less than half of patients, even when both parents are available for comparative testing. There may, ther

Improving the mental health of children in child welfare through the implementation of evidence-based parenting interventions.

Any comprehensive approach to children's mental health should consider services systems such as Child Welfare that provide services to children with high rates of emotional and behavioral disorders. This paper will review what is known about efficacious parent-focused interventions that can improve the lives of children in Child Welfare and explore possible reasons why such interventions are rarely used by Child Welfare agencies. Data from a pilot study suggest key features for increasing the implementation of efficacious practices to improve children's mental health.

Children of alcoholic mothers. Developmental, perceptual and behavioural characteristics as compared to matched controls.

From a retrospective material including all the 103 children of 30 alcoholic women, the 21 youngest born 1970-76, were paired to controls matched for sex, age, birth weight, gestational age and living area. IQ scores were measured with Griffiths and WISC scales. Controls tested within the normal range for Swedish children, while the study group scored 15-19 IQ points below controls (p less than 0.01), the means of the study group corresponding to -1.6 SD below means of the controls. Significant differences between the groups were found in all subscales. Visual perception was measured with Fros
