Antidiabetic and Lipid-Lowering Effects of the Polyphenol Extracts from the Leaves of Clausena lansium (Lour.) Skeels on Streptozotocin-Induced Type 2 Diabetic Rats.

UNLABELLED: Clausena lansium (Lour.) Skeels (Wampee) is widely grown in China and considered as a healthy fruit. Its leaves are also considered as traditional herbs. This study analyzed polyphenol compounds in polyphenol extracts of the leaves C. lansium (lour.) Skeels (PEL) and investigated the protective effect of PEL against hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in T2DM rats. The result showed that PEL is composed mainly of gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, coffee acid, ferulic acid, and rutin. PEL could obviously relieve some symptoms of T2DM rats, including emaciation, hyperhidrosis, polyphagia, …

Chromatographic analysis and antioxidant capacity of Tabernaemontana catharinensis.

In this study we evaluated the composition of the crude extract and fractions of Tabernaemontana catharinensis (Apocynaceae) by HPLC/DAD and GC/MS. We also tested the antioxidant capacity and investigated the contents of polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins and alkaloids of T. catharinensis stem bark. The extract and fractions showed inhibition against thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), in the following order: ethyl acetate (IC50 = 4.7 +/- 0.2 microg/mL) > dichloromethane (23.9 +/- 1.1 microg/mL) > n-butanolic (25.2 +/- 0.4 microg/mL) > crude extract (38.0 +/- 0.07 microg/mL). Moreover,

Blueberry leaf polyphenols suppress biofilm formation and restore oral microbial homeostasis for caries control.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a dysbiotic biofilm-induced disease driven by Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). Blueberry leaf polyphenols (BLP … cing. RESULTS: UPLC-MS/MS analysis identified a range of compounds in BLP, including quercetin and chlorogenic acid. The MIC of BLP was 500 μg/mL, and it inhibited the acid production of S. mutans. Importantly, BLP decreased the sucrose-dependent adhesion and its auto-aggregation, inhibited the activity of GTF, resulting in reduced EPS and down-regulated genes li …

Enzymes-assisted green ultrasonic extraction with UPLC-DAD quantification of phenolic compounds in chia seeds with a comparative evaluation based on geographical origins.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to enhance the recovery of chia phenolic using a green ultrasound extraction (UA) with different individual and mixed-enzymes models followed by a simultaneous determination of the phenolic [chlorogenic acid (cGA), rosmarinic acid (RA), ferulic acid (FA), quercetin (QT), kaempferol (KF)] using an in-house developed UPLC-DAD method across eleven different geographical origins. METHODOLOGY: Green solvents of acetone (ACT), ethanol (EtOH), and water (H2O) were used for UA of chia phenolic whereas, UPLC-DAD method was validated for simultaneous determination of phenoli…

The Neuroprotective Effects of Primary Functional Components Mulberry Leaf Extract in Diabetes-Induced Oxidative Stress and Inflammation.

Diabetes-associated neurodegeneration may result from increased oxidative stress in the brain under hyperglycemic conditions, which leads to neuronal cell death. The current study employs the neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y and db/db mouse model of diabetes maintained on a high-fat diet to investigate the neuroprotective effects of the primary functional components of mulberry (Morus alba Linn) leaf extract (MLE), chlorogenic acid (CGA), and neochlorogenic acid (NCGA). CGA and NCGA demonstrated the ability to enhance the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathion…

Multifunctional engineering of Mangifera indica L. peel extract-modified bacterial cellulose hydrogel: Unveiling novel strategies for enhanced heavy metal sequestration and cytotoxicity evaluation.

The escalating interest in bacterial cellulose (BC) confronts a substantial obstacle due to its biologically inert properties. Hence, BC was modified with ethanolic mango peel extract (EEMP) for various industrial and medical applications of the novel nanocomposite (BC/EEMP). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) delineated the phenolic composition of EEMP, revealing a repertoire of polyphenolic compounds, notably chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, catechin, and ellagic acid. EEMP exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus, with MIC o…

Recovery of Phenolic Compounds From Elsholtzia ciliata Leaves by Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction and Their Antioxidant Application in Food.

Elsholtzia ciliata is a potential source of potent antioxidant phenolic compounds. This study investigated the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenolic compounds (TPC) and chlorogenic acid (CGA) from E. ciliata (ELC) leaf extract. The study also evaluated the antioxidant efficacy of the extract during the preservation of 8F fat-containing gummy candies. Using the response surface method (RSM), the optimal extraction temperature, time, and sonication time were predicted to be 77°C, 67 min, and 3.6 min, respectively. At the same time, ethanol concentration (60%), pH (5.5), and material-t…
