Nile Tilapia Derived TP4 Shows Broad Cytotoxicity Toward to Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Cells.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is among the leading causes of human mortality due to a lack of effective treatments. Conventional chemotherapies affect healthy cells and cause multidrug resistance, while tumors may eventually develop resistance to less-toxic targeted therapies. Thus, the need to develop novel therapies for NSCLC is urgent. Here, we show that Nile tilapia-derived Tilapia piscidin (TP) 4 is cytotoxic to a panel of NSCLC cells with different genetic profiles. We observed that TP4 triggers NSCLC cell death through the necrosis and combining TP4 with potent Epidermal growth fac

Hot water extract of Pleurotus pulmonarius stalk waste enhances innate immune response and immune-related gene expression in red hybrid tilapia Oreochromis sp. following challenge with pathogen-associated molecular patterns.

In aquaculture, commercial fish such as red hybrid tilapia are usually raised at high density to boost the production within a short period of time. This overcrowded environment, however, may cause stress to the cultured fish and increase susceptibility to infectious diseases. Antibiotics and chemotherapeutics are used by fish farmers to overcome these challenges, but this may increase the production cost. Studies have reported on the potential of mushroom polysaccharides that can act as immunostimulants to enhance the immune response and disease resistance in fish. In the current study, hot w

Dual effect of selenium loaded chitosan nanoparticles on growth, antioxidant, immune related genes expression, transcriptomics modulation of caspase 1, cytochrome P450 and heat shock protein and Aeromonas hydrophila resistance of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Nowadays there is a great attention for nanotechnology in aquaculture production. It has an efficient role in nutrients and drugs delivery, ponds sterilization, water treatment and aquatic diseases reduction. Till now, there is no available data on impact of selenite-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (SeChNPs) on Nile tilapia. Hence, the current study investigated the effects of selenite-loaded chitosan nanoparticles supplementation on the growth, immune, antioxidant and apoptotic related genes as well as resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. A total of 400 fis

Nile tilapia P38 MAPK interacts with Tak1 and is involved in the immune response to Streptococcus agalactiae, PolyI:C, and LPS stimulation.

The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a globally recognised freshwater aquaculture species with high economic value. However, streptococcal disease, a bacterial infection, has the potential to inflict considerable economic losses on the aquaculture production of tilapia. Innate immune factors in fish play a pivotal role in disease resistance mechanisms. Consequently, a comprehensive study on the intrinsic immune response mechanisms of Nile tilapia against Streptococcus agalactiae is imperative. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the Nile tilapia p38 MAPK gene, e

Molecular characterization and increased expression of the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), T-cell receptor beta chain in response to Streptococcus agalactiae infection.

The complete cDNA sequence of the Nile tilapia T-cell receptor (TCR) β chain was cloned using 5' RACE. The full-length, 1263-bp cDNA contained a 942-bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 314-amino-acid protein. Sequence analyses revealed that the Nile tilapia TCR β chain contains four conserved cysteine residues involved in the formation of disulphide bridges and a conserved amino acid motif believed to be important for assembly and signalling of the TCR αβ/CD3 complex, both of which are normally found in the TCR β chain of other vertebrates. As detected using semi-quantitative and quantitati

Identification and characterization of interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromisniloticus).

Interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) participates in the defense against pathogens. In this study, we cloned and characterized OnIRF8 from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and investigating its immune response functions both in vivo and in vitro. The encoded open reading frame comprises of 420 amino acids, with a predicted molecular weight of 47.645 kDa. It exhibits a high degree of sequence homology (ranging from 50.57 % to 98.81 %) with IRF8 orthologs from other vertebrates. Ubiquitous OnIRF8 expression was detected across tissues, with the highest expression observed in the spleen. Bot

Probiotics ameliorate polyethylene microplastics-induced liver injury by inhibition of oxidative stress in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Microplastic particles (MPs) are environmental pollutants that can cause varying levels of aquatic toxicity. Probiotics have been shown to reduce the negative effects of toxic substances. However, the protective effect of probiotics against the adverse effects of MPs has yet to be reported. The current study sought to determine the effects of the commercial probiotic AquaStar® Growout on polystyrene (PS)-MPs-mediated hepatic oxidative stress in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fishes were assigned into four groups: the first group was the control, the second group was exposed to 1 mg/L of

Neurotoxic effects, molecular responses and oxidative stress biomarkers in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) exposed to verapamil.

Pharmaceutical drugs and their metabolites are detected in aquatic ecosystems and have been reported to cause ecotoxicological consequences to resident aquatic organisms. The study investigated the effects of acute and long-term exposure to verapamil on activities of acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant enzymes as well as mRNA expression of stress-related genes in brain and muscle tissues of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The 96h LC50 of verapamil to O. niloticus was 2.29mgL-1. Exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of verapamil (0.14, 0.29 and 0.57mgL-1) for period of 15, 30, 45 and 60da

Structurally diverse genes encode TLR13 in Nile tilapia: The two receptors can recognize Streptococcus 23S RNA and conduct signal transduction through MyD88.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a crucial role in the innate immune system, which is the first line of defence against pathogens and pathogenic products in fish. In the present study, we cloned the full-length cDNA and genome sequences of two TLR13 s (OnTLR13a, OnTLR13b) from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). TLR family motifs, i.e., the leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domains and Toll/interleukin (IL)-1 receptor (TIR) domains, were conserved in the putative proteins OnTLR13a and OnTLR13b, with fifteen LRR domains and one TIR domain. Four exons and three introns were identified in the OnTLR13a g
