Climate extremes increasingly threaten global food production, yet global multi-hazard agricultural risk assessments that jointly consider multiple hazards, crop exposure and socioeconomic vulnerability are still missing. This gap limits our ability to identify where climate shocks to croplands are most likely to translate into high agricultural risk. Here we present a global agricultural risk assessment that quantifies the exposure of croplands and ten major crop groups to heatwaves, droughts, floods and compound hot-dry events, and combines this with a vulnerability index constructed from so

Malaria remains a major health burden in South America, but the extent to which climate change will reshape vector communities is poorly understood. We modeled the distributions of 15 key Anopheles species, representing primary, secondary, and unclassified vectors, under current and future climate scenarios (SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5) using ensemble ecological niche models calibrated with 20 climatic and physiographic predictors. We quantified niche breadth and overlap and achieved high predictive performance. Analyses in environmental space revealed moderate overlap between primary and secondary vec

Climate change poses substantial challenges in containing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) from a One Health perspective. Using 4,502 AMR surveillance records involving 32 million tested isolates from 101 countries (1999-2022), we analyzed the impact of socioeconomic and environmental factors on AMR. We also established forecast models based on several scenarios, considering antimicrobial consumption reduction, sustainable development initiatives and different shared socioeconomic pathways under climate change. Our findings reveal growing AMR disparities between high-income countries and low- an

Tall trees (height ≥ 60 m) are keystone elements of tropical forests, strongly influencing biodiversity, carbon storage, and ecosystem resilience. Yet, their density and spatial distribution remain poorly quantified, especially in remote Amazonian regions, limiting our understanding of their ecological roles and contribution to forest-climate interactions. We combined airborne LiDAR data from 900 transects across the Brazilian Amazon with environmental predictors to model tall-tree density. Spatial extrapolations allowed us to generate regional distribution estimates and assess associations wi

The convergence of urban expansion, deteriorating infrastructure, and a changing climate will escalate the risks of stormwater pollution and urban flooding in the coming decades. Using outputs from an ensemble of global climate models to drive a high spatial resolution stormwater model, we analyzed climate change impacts on urban stormwater runoff and control measures for 23 cities across the United States. Runoff model outputs for two future emissions scenarios ending in 2055 were compared against a historical scenario to assess changes. All cities showed increases in average annual stormwate…

Malaria transmission is influenced by climate and land use/land cover change (LULC). This study examines the impact of climate and LULC on malaria risk in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Weekly malaria surveillance data between 2008 and 2019 from Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health were combined with hydrometeorological and LULC data. Cross-correlation analyses identified time lags. Bayesian spatiotemporal models estimated annual LULC rates of change (ARC) by census area and assessed the effects on Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum incidence. ARC for the five land cover classes (forest, agricu

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a zoonotic disease caused by protozoa of the Leishmania genus, transmitted by vectors from the Phlebotominae subfamily. The interaction between the vector, reservoir, and parasite is susceptible to climate change. This study explores how temperature and rainfall influenced the incidence of CL in 15 Colombian municipalities between 2017 and 2019. Epidemiological data were obtained from Colombia's Instituto Nacional de Salud, while climatological data came from the Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales. Using Spearman's rank correlation coef

In this study we investigated the potential impact of climate change in Portugal on heat-related mortality, air pollution-related health effects, and selected vectorborne diseases. The assessment used climate scenarios from two regional climate models for a range of future time periods. The annual heat-related death rates in Lisbon may increase from between 5.4 and 6 per 100,000 in 1980-1998 to between 8.5 and 12.1 by the 2020s and to a maximum of 29.5 by the 2050s, if no adaptations occur. The projected warmer and more variable weather may result in better dispersion of nitrogen dioxide level…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Climate change is intensifying health inequities, particularly among older adults who face heightened vulnerability to climate-related hazards. With the global senior population estimated at one billion and projected to increase by 20% by 2050, there is urgent need for health systems to identify and respond to their specific risks. This environmental scan aims to map and evaluate existing tools and frameworks used to assess climate-related health vulnerabilities in older adults, with a focus on informing equitable healthcare planning and system resilience.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are increasing in frequency, duration and intensity under climate change. Although current MHWs trigger broad ecological impacts, such as coral bleaching, mass mortality of seagrass meadows, and declines in important fish stocks, the cascading effects of MHWs on ecosystem structure and functions in the 21st century remain unclear. In this study, we utilise a global biomass flow modelling framework to analyse these impacts. Leveraging climate projections from two Earth system models (ESMs), we project marine food webs dynamics at a spatial resolution of 1° latitude and l

Nature-based climate solutions (NCS) are championed as a primary tool to mitigate climate change, especially in forested regions capable of storing and sequestering vast amounts of carbon. New England is one of the most heavily forested regions in the United States (>75% forested by land area), and forest carbon is a significant component of climate mitigation policies. Large infrequent disturbances, such as hurricanes, are a major source of uncertainty and risk for policies relying on forest carbon for climate mitigation, especially as climate change is projected to alter the intensity and ex

BACKGROUND: Despite worldwide efforts to eradicate malaria over the past century, the disease remains a significant challenge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today. Climate change is even anticipated to worsen the situation in areas with higher altitudes and vulnerable populations. This study in Haut-Katanga, a highland region, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of past control measures and to explore the impact of climate change on the region's distinct seasonal malaria pattern throughout the last century.
METHODS: We integrated colonial medical records (1917-1983) from two maj

Climate change is likely to influence livestock production by increasing the prevalence of diseases, including parasites. The traditional practice of controlling nematodes in livestock by the application of anthelmintics is, however, increasingly compromised by the development of resistance to these drugs in parasite populations. This study used a previously developed simulation model of the entire equine cyathostomin lifecycle to investigate the effect a changing climate would have on the development of anthelmintic resistance. Climate data from six General Circulation Models based on four di

The activities of extracellular enzymes, the proximate agents of decomposition in soils, are known to depend strongly on temperature, but less is known about how they respond to changes in precipitation patterns, and the interaction of these two components of climate change. Both enzyme production and turnover can be affected by changes in temperature and soil moisture, thus it is difficult to predict how enzyme pool size may respond to altered climate. Soils from the Boston-Area Climate Experiment (BACE), which is located in an old field (on abandoned farmland), were used to examine how clima

The biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationship has been a central focus in ecology, yet its nature and strength remain contentious. In natural ecosystems, these relationships are modulated by a suite of abiotic (e.g., climate, soil) and biotic (e.g., community composition) factors, and often result in complex and context-dependent patterns. This study investigated xerophytic shrub ecosystems in western Inner Mongolia. We used Random Forest models to identify the key environmental drivers of biodiversity and community biomass. Based on these findings, Structural Equation Modeling was

Valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) is a disease caused by inhalation of spores from the soil-dwelling Coccidioides fungal species. The disease is endemic to semiarid areas in the western USA and parts of Central and South America. The region of interest for this study, Kern County, California, accounts for approximately 14% of the reported valley fever cases in the USA each year. It is hypothesized that the weather conditions that foster the growth and dispersal of the fungus influence the number of cases in the endemic area. This study uses regression-based analysis to model and assess the sea

That the enhanced greenhouse effect may prove to influence human health will come as no surprise. One of the potential health consequences is a change in distribution patterns of vector-borne diseases. In tropical countries, such diseases are a major cause of illness and death. One of the most important vector-borne diseases in the world is malaria, which is associated with one of four species of parasite and transmitted by a mosquito vector. Climatic conditions, and temperature in particular, directly influence mosquito development, feeding-frequency and longevity of the mosquito, as well as

BACKGROUND: Malaria, whose parasites are transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes, remains a major public health burden in Madagascar despite the control measures led by the National Malaria Control Program. Understanding the population dynamics of Anopheles mosquitoes is therefore essential to optimize malaria surveillance and control. This study aimed to develop a model incorporating environmental, climatic and agricultural determinants of Anopheles abundance to predict their spatiotemporal distribution.
METHODS: We developed a model of spatiotemporal dynamics for four Anopheles species, vectors

Timely forecasting of dengue hospitalizations is essential for public health preparedness but is frequently limited by delays in official reporting systems. While climatic variables are known to influence dengue transmission and can be obtained in near-real time, hospitalization data often become available only weeks after patient admission, reducing their value for early response. Digital information generated during clinical practice, such as physicians' search patterns, may provide a complementary and more timely signal of emerging disease activity. This study evaluates whether integrating
