Identification of cognitive subtypes and risk networks in Chinese older adults: based on latent profile analysis and explainable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Traditional cognitive screening often relies on total scores, which can easily mask asynchronous impairment patterns across diff … ernet use acts as a critical "bridge node" connecting age and education level, exerting a potential cognitive reserve effect in mitigating calculation decline. CONCLUSION: This study defines a cognitive impairment subtype primarily driven by education poverty and digital exclusion, which is prone to be missed in routine memory-centric screenings. The findings sugg …

"Brain training" improves cognitive performance and survival in a transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Environmental enrichment (EE) has been shown to improve neurological function and cognitive performance in animal models of Alzheimer's dise … apparent after as little as 2 weeks of training in the OX maze. These data suggest that there is a cognitive reserve that may be exploited in neurodegenerative disease. While brain training was not beneficial for all mice, it produced no deleterious effects, and so warrants further study in rodent models of HD.

[Diagnosis and management of delirium in older adults].

Delirium, also known as acute confusional state, is an acute brain disorder characterized by cognitive disturbances, particularly attentional deficits, potential behavioral changes, and altered vigilance, with a sudden onset and fluctuating course. It is a common condition among hospitalized older patients and has serious consequences for the patient, their family, and the healthcare system. It is considered an "acute brain failure" that often occurs in the context of underlying cognitive and cerebral vulnerability, similar to how acute kidney injury complicates chronic kidney disease or how a

Enhanced cognitive flexibility with self-determined task choice.

Cognitive control-the ability to regulate one's behavior in accordance with internal goals-is fundamental to adaptive behavior. Despite substantial progress in our understanding of different cognitive control functions supporting goal-directed behavior, most studies rely on externally instructed tasks, whereas in real-world contexts, people often have the autonomy to choose which task to perform. Although research suggests that having the opportunity to choose can enhance a variety of psychological processes (e.g., motivation or learning), it remains unclear whether and how cognitive control d

Wellbeing trajectories and dementia risk among Mexican-origin adults living in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: Higher well-being is consistently associated with better cognitive health. However, little is known about how long-term trajectories of well-being are associated with cognitive health or modifiable dementia risk factors, particularly among populations at high risk for dementia. The current study addressed these open questions. METHOD: The California Families Project, a 14-year longitudinal study of Mexican-origin adults living in the United States (N = 1,240), was used to estimate long-term trajectories of life satisfaction and optimism and whether the level and/or slope of each fa

The memory binding test in a longitudinal study of cognitive aging and preclinical disease.

OBJECTIVE: The Memory Binding Test (MBT) shows promise in detecting early cognitive changes associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study assesses the psychometric properties (i.e., construct and criterion validity, test-retest reliability) of the MBT and its sensitivity to incipient disease and incident cognitive impairment. METHOD: One hundred forty-nine cognitively unimpaired adults ages 45-85 completed the MBT and neuropsychological tests at baseline; 132 returned for 2-year follow-up. Based on neuroradiological ratings of amyloid positron emission tomography and MRI markers at bas

Mental health, pain, and sleep factors associated with subjective cognitive difficulties in individuals with spinal cord injury.

Objective: We examined the relationships between self-reported demographic, mental health, physical health, and health behavior factors and subjective cognitive difficulties in a unique cohort of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) who averaged more than 30 years postinjury at assessment. Method: The study involved cross-sectional analyses of self-report assessment data collected during the most recent data-collection period (2018-2019) of a 45-year multicohort longitudinal study. Participants (n = 553) were identified from a specialty hospital in the southeastern United States and two m

Adverse childhood experiences and domain-specific cognitive function in a population-based study of older adults in rural South Africa.

Research on early life adversity and later-life cognitive function is conflicting, with little evidence from low-income settings. We investigated associations between adverse childhood experiences and cognitive function in an older population who grew up under racial segregation during South African apartheid. Data were from 1,871 adults aged 40-79 in the population-representative "Health and Ageing in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa" in 2015. The adverse childhood experiences were having a parent unemployed for > 6 months; having parents who argued or foug

Intranasal insulin for improving cognitive function in multiple sclerosis.

There is an urgent need to identify/develop novel therapies that ca … data missingness (particularly during COVID-19), outcome measure insensitivity to change, baseline cognitive reserve, or other factors. Nonetheless, intranasally-administered therapeutics may be of interest to develop further as a way to get across the blood brain barrier.

Bridging Evidence Gaps in Severe Carotid Stenosis: A Systematic Review of Pre-Revascularization Risk Stratification, Clinical Predictors, and High-Risk Subgroups.

This review synthesizes evidence on pre-revascularization risk factors. This systematic review synthesizes pre-revascularization evidence on CAS-related cognitive decline and evaluates timing, restenosis, high-risk subgroups (dialysis, radiation-induced, and sex), bilateral stenosis, hyperperfusion, and risk for stroke/death/MI outcomes. Multidomain modifiable dementia risk factors are associated with poorer cognition in midlife.

OBJECTIVE: Studies of modifiable dementia risk factors (MDRFs) generally consider MDRFs individually, despite strong evidence that they co-occur in adult populations. In a large sample of middle-aged adults, this study aimed to determine the frequency and co-occurrence of MDRFs, spanning five domains (mood symptomatology, risky lifestyle behaviors, cardiovascular conditions, cognitive/social engagement, sleep disorders/symptomatology). The relationship between number of domains in which MDRFs were reported with cognitive performance and subjective cognitive concerns was then determined. METHO

An active cognitive lifestyle as a potential neuroprotective factor in Huntington's disease.

A cognitive stimulating lifestyle has been observed to confer cognitive benefits in multiple neurodegenerative diseases. However, the underlying neurobiological basis of this phenomenon remains unclear. Huntington's disease can provide a suitable model to study the effects and neural mechanisms of cognitive engagement in neurodegeneration. In this study, we investigate the effect of lifestyle factors such as education, occupation and engagement in cognitive activities in Huntington's disease gene carriers on cognitive performance and age of onset as well as the underlying neural changes sustai

Mental health and neurodevelopmental factors relevant to recreational fitness-to-dive assessment: a structured review and clinical considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health and neurodevelopmental factors, including psychiatric disorders and psychotropic medication use, are commonly id … ants of diving safety. Cognitive performance is reduced under diving conditions, suggesting limited cognitive reserve and increased vulnerability to impairment. Panic and maladaptive behavioural responses represent key pathways to adverse outcomes. Medication use alone is not a consistent predictor of risk, although side effects and periods of clinical instability …

Is the Cognitive Remediation of Social Cognition (RC2S) program useful to improve social cognition and functional outcomes in people with schizophrenia? A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Difficulties in social interactions are a core characteristic of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. They are often linked to impairments in social cognition, including emotion recognition, social perception, theory of mind, and attributional style. The RC2S program (cognitive remediation of social cognition) aims to address these deficits through individualized interventions. This study is the first controlled randomized trial to compare RC2S with RECOS (Remédiation Cognitive pour la Schizophrénie ou un trouble associé), a neurocognitive remediation program, to evaluate their respect
