The impact of COVID-19 lockdown stringency on loneliness in five European countries.

RATIONALE: The coronavirus pandemic has forced governments to implement a variety of different dynamic lockdown-stringency strategies in the last two years. Extensive lockdown periods could have potential unintended consequences on mental health, at least for at-risk groups. OBJECTIVE: We present novel evidence on the heterogeneous direct and indirect effects of lockdown-stringency measures on individuals' perception of social isolation (i.e. loneliness) using panel data from five European countries (Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Sweden), which tracks changes in both in-person and remote

[The COVID-19 pandemic: extreme poverty put to the test at the end of lockdown].

INTRODUCTION: The way in which the COVID-19 pandemic was handled resulted in public health measures that had varying impacts on different segments of society. We consider the experience and feelings of a group of ATD Fourth World activists in precarious living situations, specifically during the end of the first lockdown period. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH: In this article we will analyze, from their speech, the risk perception and the related attitudes in this specific period (April to July 2020). RESULTS: The end of lockdown represented a liminal state where fear was ever-present. Their behaviors

From Hostile to Benevolent Ageism: Polarizing Attitudes Toward Older Adults in German COVID-19-Related Tweets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have linked coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) to a rise in ageism. While a growing body of research examined hostile ageism during the pandemic, benevolent ageism received less attention. Drawing on the stereotype content theory and the classic tripartite model of attitudes, the current study explored how benevolent and hostile ageism are reflected in the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of attitudes toward older adults in German COVID-19-related tweets. The study examined the most prevalent attitudes as well as changes in prevalence

The impact of COVID-19 on the hot food takeaway planning regulatory environment: perspectives of local authority professionals in the North East of England.

AIMS: Planning regulations have been used to prevent the over-proliferation of hot food takeaways, minimising the impact of local obesogenic environments. To help mitigate the effects of lockdown, the UK government introduced temporary changes in March 2020 to Planning Regulations for England, allowing food retailers to open for takeaway services beyond 'ancillary' level without needing to apply for planning permission through permitted development rights (PDR). Businesses are required to notify their local authority (LA) when they implement PDRs. To better understand the impact of regulations

[Artificial intelligence facilitates tropical infectious disease control and research].

Since the global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in late 2019, artificial intelligence technology has shown increasing values in the research and control of tropical infectious diseases. The introduction of artificial intelligence technology has shown remarkable effectiveness to reduce the diagnosis and treatment burdens, reduce missing diagnosis and misdiagnosis, improve the surveillance and forecast ability and enhance the medicine and vaccine development efficiency. This paper summarizes the current applications of artificial intelligence in tropical infectious disease contr

Impact of COVID-19 on routine immunization in Oyo State, Nigeria: trend analysis of immunization data in the pre- and post-index case period; 2019-2020.

INTRODUCTION: the response to COVID-19 pandemic has posed new obstacles to the fragile health system, most especially in the area of vaccination across much of Africa. As the response to the pandemic intensifies through the application of non-pharmacologic interventions as well as enforcement of the lockdowns across African cities, there is a significant risk that more children will miss out on life-saving vaccines that can prevent childhood killer diseases. This study was therefore conducted to look at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine immunization in Oyo State, Nigeria. METHODS

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on an international rehabilitation study in MS: the CogEx experience.

Pandemic restrictions have led to changes in therapy plans and disrupted rehabilitation services for people with multiple sclerosis. CogEx is an international, multicentre MS dual-intervention (cognitive rehabilitation, aerobic exercise) randomized, controlled rehabilitation trial confined to people with progressive disease. The primary outcome is cognition (processing speed). There are 11 treatment sites in six countries with participants required to make 27 site visits over 12 weeks. Collectively, the large, in-person demands of the trial, and the varying international policies for the contai

The Utility of Meditation and Mindfulness-Based Interventions in the Time of COVID-19: A Theoretical Proposition and Systematic Review of the Relevant Prison, Quarantine and Lockdown Literature.

As of July 20, 2021, Covid-19 has killed 4,086,000 people, infected at least 190,169,833 others, and devastated the world's economy. To slow the spread of the virus, numerous governments instituted "lockdown" policies and quarantines, limiting social interactions to the immediate household. The experience of isolation and uncertainty have contributed to increased fear, anxiety, and loneliness; with limited options of research-supported interventions. Although different in nature, the experiences of quarantine and lockdown have been likened to incarceration. Past research has found meditation a

Strategies to Optimize the Efficacy of Anthelmintic Drugs in Ruminants.

Anthelmintic resistance in human and animal pathogenic helminths has been spreading in prevalence and severity. Multidrug resistance is a widespread problem in livestock animals. The use of available pharmacology-based information is critical to the design of successful future approaches for parasite control. Relevant scientific work supporting the main strategies to optimize anthelmintic therapy in ruminants under the current drug-resistance scenario is described here. We emphasize the need for further integrated pharmaco-parasitological knowledge to extend the lifespan of both traditional an

Closing in on 'perhaps the most dreadful of the remaining plagues': an independent view of the multidisciplinary alliance to optimize schistosomiasis control in Africa.

The 4-year (2006-2010) alliance to optimize schistosomiasis control and transmission surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa (CONTRAST), funded by the European Commission, stands out as a 'game-changer' by successfully harnessing and combining new as well as previously available capabilities for schistosomiasis control in selected African countries. By establishing an African research network and promoting an interactive agenda that operates simultaneously at the molecular, biological, spatial and social levels, a navigable avenue for validation and application of tools complementary to preventive

Estimating the burden of human leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis, a disease that is often under- or misdiagnosed, significantly impacts human health in many parts of the world and generally affects the most vulnerable communities. Obtaining reliable and comparable information about the occurrence of leptospirosis in populations, and detecting changing trends, are critical for setting policy and public health priorities. Traditional sources of information about the descriptive epidemiology, the disability attributed to leptospirosis infection, and associated risk factors are generally incomplete, fragmented and of uncertain reliability and comp

[The Mandoul human African trypanosomiasis focus in Chad: from evaluation to control].

The Mandoul focus of human African trypanosomiasis in southern Chad was first described by Gaston Muraz in the 1920s. After 40 years of control measures, case reports became rare and the focus was forgotten. However the number of cases began to increase in 1993 and coordinated control measures were implemented in 2002. The first phase of control consisted of mapping out the focus that was shown to involve 45 villages and camps on both sides of the Mandoul River. The estimated number of inhabitants in the area is 20.000 and the endemic prevalence was 3.78%. Dynamic passive screening and regular
