BACKGROUND: Social insect colonies routinely face large vertebrate predators, against which they need to mount a collective defence. To do so, honeybees use an alarm pheromone that recruits nearby bees into mass stinging of the perceived threat. This alarm pheromone is carried directly on the stinger; hence, its concentration builds up during the course of the attack. We investigate how bees react to different alarm pheromone concentrations and how this evolved response pattern leads to better coordination at the group level.

However, the immunization did not prevent African horse sickness fever (AHSF) in approximately 10% of the vaccinated horses despite high enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and virus neutralizing antibodies. Communication disorders can arise as a consequence of right hemispheric brain injury due to, for example, stroke. These disorders can comprise language comprehension, language production and pragmatic language use. If these problems are not recognised in time, treatment will probably focus on behavioural problems, which would lead to further deterioration of the patient due to an escalation in interaction. We present a patient in whom this situation occured. However, by addressing her underlying communication problem, we were able to improve her quality of life.

The article studies the way in which health professionals communicate the diagnosis of Down syndrome to parents. For that the personal stories of the mothers collected in the answers given by them to the open questions of a questionnaire on ″communication of the diagnosis″ are analyzed.
