Drug abuse in a farm community; a brief appraisal of a research work.

This project was initiated in the rural areas of the Punjab to assess the prevailing trends in the abuse of intoxicating drugs by rural folk, with a view to contributing to future primary mental health care planning as an integral part of comprehensive health care planning. Twenty-four villages were selected from six community development blocks in the three bordering districts of the Punjab. In the rural population, the abuse of intoxicating drugs is mainly confined to alcohol, tobacco, opium and cannabis. Among psychosocial correlates, religion was of obvious predominance. Since Sikh are non

Collaboration begins with connection: Experiences of community-based speech-language pathologists in cleft palate continuity of care.

PURPOSE: Little is known about how community-based speech-language pathologists experience continuity of care when working with children with cleft palate. This study explored how continuity of care is promoted, the barriers and facilitators encountered, and the nature of collaboration with cleft team clinicians and families. METHOD: Twelve community-based speech-language pathologists from Australia and New Zealand participated in semi-structured interviews. Participants worked across private practices, schools, hospitals, and community health. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to interpre

Addressing individual differences in mobility transition counseling with older adults.

In the final phase of a 3-phase project, the Assessment of Readiness for Mobility Transition (ARMT) was clinically validated, emphasizing assessment/intervention. ARMT and coping, health/vision status, and social support measures were administered to 133 community-dwelling older adults. Concurrent validity is supported. Higher readiness to cope with mobility transition and self-confidence related to fall risk, higher self-rated health/vision, and fewer maladaptive behaviors, but not social support/adaptive coping, suggesting that those at risk can benefit from person-centered intervention to m

A Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Extranet: supporting local communication and information dissemination.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to explore the use and perceptions of a local Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Extranet and its potential to support future information and communication applications. The SARS Extranet was a single, managed electronic and limited access system to manage local, provincial and other SARS control information. METHODS: During July, 2003, a web-based and paper-based survey was conducted with 53 SARS Steering Committee members in Hamilton. It assessed the use and perceptions of the Extranet that had been built to support the committee during the

Cancer equity for those impacted by mass incarceration.

The cancer disparities between people with incarceration histories compared with those who do not have those histories are vast. Opportunities for bolstering cancer equity among those impacted by mass incarceration exist in criminal legal system policy; carceral, community, and public health linkages; better cancer prevention, screening, and treatment services in carceral settings; expansion of health insurance; education of professionals; and use of carceral sites for health promotion and transition to community care. Clinicians, researchers, persons with a history of incarceration, carceral

No Fixed Address, Still in Need: Coordinating Inpatient Rehabilitation for People Experiencing Homelessness: A Case Series.

Homelessness significantly hinders access to inpatient rehabilitation services, particularly for individuals with complex medical and functional needs. This case series presents three persons experiencing homelessness with disabilities-due to amputation, functional neurological disorder, and stroke-who require coordinated rehabilitation care. Each case illustrates the compounded barriers persons experiencing homelessness face, including lack of stable housing, limited access to follow-up care, and fragmented healthcare and social service systems. Through interdisciplinary collaboration involvi

A chronic care model for spina bifida transition.

Providing comprehensive transition care for adolescents and young adults with spina bifida (AYASB) requires a structured approach to addressing chronic condition management, self-management, care coordination, and health care navigation that is adaptable to the various levels of cognitive ability, physical function, and family/community environments within the population. This commentary (1) highlights AYASB transition program needs identified in the literature and within a local community, (2) analyzes advantages and limitations of published AYASB transition care models in addressing these ne

Hepatitis A among residents of First Nations Reserves in British Columbia, 1991-1996.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis A spreads by the fecal-oral route. We hypothesize that it is more common in Aboriginal communities because of poverty, crowded housing and inadequate or substandard water and sewage systems. METHODS: We tabulated on-reserve cases reported to First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, Health Canada. We obtained information on community water supply, sewage disposal and mean population per housing unit, from site inspections in a 1994 survey. RESULTS: Crude incidence on-reserve was 31 per 100,000 persons per year (95% CI: 25 to 37), twice as high as in the general population

Community-based questionnaires and health statistics as tools for the cost-efficient identification of communities at risk of urinary schistosomiasis.

Self-administered questionnaires, distributed by existing administrative channels to village party chairmen, head-teachers and schoolchildren, showed good diagnostic performance for the qualitative assessment of urinary schistosomiasis endemicity. At a cost 34 times below that of the WHO-recommended parasitological screening strategy, the schoolchildren's questionnaire allowed the screening of 75 out of 77 schools of a rural Tanzanian district in six weeks, and the exclusion of schools not at high risk for urinary schistosomiasis with over 90% confidence. The headteacher and party questionnair

Metro Atlanta responds to West Nile virus: a coordinated public health response.

Three and a half million people live in metropolitan Atlanta, in multiple counties with varying population bases, resources, issues and separate boards of health. Historically, public health issues have been managed within each county, with very little sharing of information among counties. The 1999 West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak in the Northeast caused public health officials in Atlanta to recognize the potential for the disease to spread to Georgia and the need to develop a coordinated, multi-jurisdictional response plan. This plan would need to address a new disease with little scientific d

Stigmatised health topics in sport: An action research approach to enhance knowledge and communication.

Performance development among adolescent athletes is influenced by various factors besides physical training and recovery, such as mental health, energy availability and hormonal symptoms and dysfunction. Despite the frequency with which these health-related challenges occur in athletes, they are often stigmatised topics of discussion. The current study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate an educational intervention to foster knowledge-sharing and communication about stigmatised health topics among late adolescent athletes (i.e. 16-19 years old) and their coaches. An action research metho

Breaking the mold: expanding options for reproductive health awareness: the CARE experience.

The early years of the CARE family planning and reproductive health program were geared primarily toward modern methods of contraception and providing services. However, new and fresh opportunities to address reproductive health awareness and natural family planning are now emerging as important options. In these programs, coordination and collaboration with other sectors such as food and nutrition, children's health and natural resource management, combined with more sophisticated approaches for assessing need and reaching communities with information, has resulted in more people being reache

Essential Elements of Forensic Assertive Community Treatment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to:• Assess characteristics of forensic assertive community treatment programs. ABSTRACT: Forensic assertive community treatment (FACT) has emerged internationally as an intervention strategy for people with serious mental disorders who are involved with the criminal justice system. Studies to date have shown marked variability, however, in FACT program design and operation. Based upon a literature review and relevant experience, the authors present their perspective on the essential elements of FACT. Giv

Evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of a community dialogue intervention in the prevention and control of schistosomiasis in Nampula province, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic neglected tropical disease that ranks second only to malaria in terms of human suffering in the tropics and subtropics. Biomedical disease control interventions need to be complemented with effective prevention and health education strategies, that address the social and environmental determinants of disease. Malaria Consortium conducted an implementation research study between May 2014 and February 2016, in four districts of Nampula province, Mozambique, to test a Community Dialogue (CD) intervention to enhance schistosomiasis prevention and control.
