How endemic countries can accelerate lymphatic filariasis elimination? An analytical review to identify strategic and programmatic interventions.

This review of literature and analysis was conducted to identify additional and sustainable strategies to accelerate LF elimination from endemic countries. Migrant and seasonal agricultural workers are essential to the food systems of the United States (U.S.), yet they experience some of the mos … portation barriers, and fear of institutional discrimination. Drawing on emerging models, including community health workers, mobile agricultural clinics, and cross-border health initiatives, this commentary reflects on how more portable and culturally grounded approaches could improve health outcomes for migrant agricultural populations. The Midwest serves as a critical …

Evaluation of Allocation Schemes of COVID-19 Testing Resources in a Community-Based Door-to-Door Testing Program.

IMPORTANCE: Overcoming social barriers to COVID-19 testing is an important issue, especially given the demographic disparities in case incidence rates and testing. Delivering culturally appropriate testing resources using data-driven approaches in partnership with community-based health workers is promising, but little data are available on the design and effect of such interventions. OBJECTIVES: To assess and evaluate a door-to-door COVID-19 testing initiative that allocates visits by community health workers by selecting households in areas with a high number of index cases, by using uncert…

Measuring Environmental Chemical Burden with Wristbands: Implications for Kidney Health Among Women in Rural Guatemala.

Chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDu) is a public health concern, particularly in agricultural communities, with multiple environmental exposures hypothesized as potential contributors. This study employed a targeted exposure assessment using personal silicone wristbands to characterize chemical exposures among women living and working in CKDu-affected regions of Guatemala. Participants wore wristbands for seven days, passively sampling air and dermal exposures. Overall, 45 wristbands were collected from 37 female participants (19 sugarcane workers and 18 community members). Of the 1

Variation in the quality and out-of-pocket cost of treatment for childhood malaria, diarrhoea, and pneumonia: Community and facility based care in rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: A key barrier to appropriate treatment for malaria, diarrhoea, and pneumonia (MDP) in children under 5 years of age in low income rural settings is the lack of access to quality health care. The WHO and UNICEF have therefore called for the scale-up of integrated community case management (iCCM) using community health workers (CHWs). The current study assessed access to treatment, out-of-pocket expenditure and the quality of treatment provided in the public and private sectors compared to national guidelines, using data collected in a large representative survey of caregivers of chi…

Knowledge about childhood autism among health workers (KCAHW) questionnaire: description, reliability and internal consistency.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge and awareness about childhood autism is low among health workers and the general community in Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African countries. Poor knowledge and awareness about childhood autism, especially among health workers can compromise early recognition and interventions which had been known to improve prognosis in children with autism. In formulating policy and designing interventions for these children, there is need to develop a reliable tool that can be used in assessing baseline knowledge about childhood autism among health workers and the impact that future c

A community approach to trachoma control in the Northern Transvaal.

Trachoma represents the largest single cause of preventable blindness in the Black population of the Northern Transvaal. Epidemiological and cultural considerations indicate the necessity of community involvement in trachoma control at the household level. Involvement of the community by means of groups of voluntary health workers (care groups) has proved to be effective and acceptable to the local inhabitants. These groups, who form part of the comprehensive health system, integrate trachoma control into the primary health care activities of the area.
