OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses when the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism (SSAGA-II) interview was administered in person with the prevalence when the SSAGA-II was conducted by telephone.
METHOD: As part of the Collaborative Studies on the Genetics of Alcoholism, SSAGAs were administered either by telephone (n = 1,294) or in person (n = 1,484) to adult relatives of probands (42.3% male). The two modes of interview were compared with respect to reported lifetime prevalence of (1) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual

BACKGROUND: Alcohol dependence tends to aggregate within families. We analyzed data from the family collection of the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism to quantify familial aggregation using several different criterion sets. We also assessed the aggregation of other psychiatric disorders in the same sample to identify areas of possible shared genetic vulnerability.
DESIGN: Age-corrected lifetime morbid risk was estimated in adult first-degree relatives of affected probands and control subjects for selected disorders. Diagnostic data were gathered by semistructured interview (t

Impulsive-compulsive buying disorder (ICBD) is an impulse control disorder not otherwise specified (ICD-NOS) characterized by impulsive drives and compulsive behaviours (buying unneeded things), personal distress, impaired social and vocational functioning and financial problems. Despite being described in the 19th century, serious attention to ICBD began only in the last decade with the first epidemiological and pharmacological investigation. Biological, social and psychological factors contribute to the aetiology of ICBD. Cognitive-behavioural therapy and selective serotonin re-uptake inhibi

Recently Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has found continuous use in treatment of neurological movement disorders. However DBS in psychiatric illnesses is less investigated. Its application in depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and therapy-resistant Tourette- Syndrome shows positive effects and offers an advanced alternative to neurosurgical therapies of the past. There are also case reports suggesting therapeutic benefits in schizophrenia and addiction. To a large extent, the mechanisms of action appear to be still unknown; the side effects seem partially modulated through the stimulatio

Aripiprazole is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in Europe and the United States, and for bipolar disorders in the latter. Nevertheless, a review of recent literature has shown that aripiprazole has been studied in many other disorders, notably resistant depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality, Tourette syndrome, addiction, psychotic symptoms in children and adolescents, and neurological and psychiatric disorders in the elderly (late onset delusional disorders, Alzheimer, Parkinson, and delirium). The study of aripiprazole in these numerous indica

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to systematically assess and discuss literature on the impact of visual impairment (VI) in combination with specific mental health disorders (MHDs), i.e. personality disorders (including antisocial, borderline and dependent personality disorder), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), obsessive-compulsive disorder and psychotic disorders, on daily functioning. METHODS: A systematic review was performed following the PRISMA-statement. The databases PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane library, and Web of Science were searched for relevant publications up to

We investigated the role of inhibition failure in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) through an eye tracking experiment. Twenty-five subjects with OCD were recruited, as well as 25 with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and 25 healthy controls. A 3 (group: OCD group, GAD group and control group) × 2 (target eccentricity: far and near) × 2 (saccade task: prosaccade and antisaccade) mixed design was used, with all participants completing two sets of tasks involving both prosaccade (eye movement towards a target) and antisaccade (eye movement away from a target). The main outcome was the eye mo

Data from the Children in the Community Study, a prospective longitudinal investigation, were used to investigate the association of personality disorder (PD) traits, evident by early adulthood, with risk for the development of unipolar depressive disorders by middle adulthood. Antisocial, borderline, dependent, depressive, histrionic, and schizotypal PD traits, identified between ages 14 and 22, were significantly associated with risk for dysthymic disorder (DD) or major depressive disorder (MDD) by a mean age of 33 after a history of unipolar depression and other psychiatric disorder was con

PURPOSE: Adolescents and adults with Down syndrome are noted to display symptoms and behaviors consistent with a diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. While evidenced-based interventions, including psychopharmacology and therapeutic interventions including exposure and response prevention, exist and effectively treat obsessive-compulsive symptoms in neurotypical populations, less is known about effective treatments for similar presentations in persons with Down syndrome.
METHODS: A scoping rapid review was conducted in April 2023 to determine what treatments are being used to target obs

AIMS: In the present study, we investigated the associations between the three identity dimensions of Kaufman (Consolidated Identity, Disturbed Identity, Lack of Identity) and symptoms of personality disorders (PDs) in 176 female inpatients with an eating disorder (ED). We examined five aspects: the prevalence of categorical PD diagnoses in patients with EDs; the relationship between dimensional PD scores and identity dimensions as well as their relationships with age and ED subtype; and the unique variance in dimensional PD scores explained by identity dimensions, while controlling for age an

This paper reports relationships between symptoms and premorbid personality in a varied sample of depressed patients. Symptoms were rated by a psychiatrist at clinical interview; personality was rated by patients on a self-report after clinical improvement, using the Maudsley Personality Inventory and an inventory of obsessive, hysterical and oral personality. Additional ratings on the latter were obtained at interview with a relative. The most prominent finding was that patients with premorbid neuroticism also showed a neurotic rather than an endogenous symptom pattern. Additional relationshi

While descriptive psychopathology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is now well-established, there is still a lack of a satisfying model of explicative psychopathology that explains the mechanisms that generate obsessive phenomenology. The main attempts to delineate such a model are based on cognitive therapy: according to this approach OCD is a consequence of dysfunctional beliefs (i.e. overestimation of the risk or of the influence of one's own mind on the reality). On the contrary, according to postrationalist cognitive approach, OCD would be based on a characteristic personality struc

There is tension between theories and empirical evidence linking affective instability to obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) and OCPD diagnostic tools emphasizing restricted affect. Contextual stressors, including unexpected routine disruption and interpersonal discord, may help reconcile this apparent contradiction. High environmental control in OCPD should, on average, correspond to reduced affect, with infrequent lapses alternatively producing acute, short-term elevations. The current study examined affective processes of OCPD in daily life using ecological momentary assessmen…

Binge-eating disorder and seasonal affective disorder were first described as clinically relevant conditions in very close temporal proximity a few decades ago. Both disorders have a higher prevalence rate in woman than in men, are characterized by a high proneness-to-stress and manifest heightened responsiveness to high-calorie, hyper-palatable foods. In recent years, a compelling body of evidence suggests that foods high in sugar and fat have the potential to alter brain reward circuitry in a manner similar to that seen when addictive drugs like alcohol and heroin are consumed in excess. BACKGROUND: Serotonergic antidepressants are first-line medication therapies for obsessive-compulsive disorder, however it is not known if synaptic serotonin availability is important for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor efficacy. The present study tested the hypothesis that temporary reduction in central serotonin transmission, through acute tryptophan depletion, would result in an increase in anxiety in selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor-remitted obsessive-compulsive disorder patients.
METHODS: Eight patients (four males) with obsessive-compulsive disorder who showed sustained cli

BACKGROUND AND AIM: International guidelines indicate pharmacological therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as gold standard treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, up to 40% patients do not fully respond to CBT, thus manifesting persistent symptomatology. Empirical research reported brief strategic therapy (BST) as a potential treatment for OCD. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the efficacy of BST in treating OCD and to identify the clinical characteristics associated to response.
METHODS: BST protocol was administered to patients with OCD. During a 2
