Ablation of neoplasia by direct current.

The application of low-voltage direct electrical current (DEC) has been studied in animals and humans for the ablation of anal condylomata, oesophageal cancer and Kaposi's sarcoma. Twenty milliamps of DEC passed through multiple 6 cm x 1 cm, flat-plate longitudinal electrodes into the squamous mucosa of the oesophagus of healthy dogs for periods ranging from 10 min to 2 h resulted in denudation and necrosis of the oesophageal mucosa at the site of application of the current. In humans, the application of DEC to two patients with benign anal condyloma acuminata, three patients with inoperable o

Human papillomavirus in the male patient.

Human papillomavirus is a double-stranded DNA virus associated with a broad spectrum of clinical states including condylomata acuminata, latent and subclinical infection (acetowhitening), Bowen's disease, and carcinoma of the penis and anus. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with site-subtype specificity; additional studies are needed to elucidate the exact transmissibility and disease course of HPV infection. The association of HPV-16 and HPV-18 with anogenital malignancy increases the importance of treating such infections and raises questions about the role of HPV in oncogenesis. T…

[Use of the laser in urology].

The usage of laser therapy in urology is based upon thermal effects that lead to tissue destruction by coagulation necrosis and volatilizati … tumors mainly in selected cases as solitary kidney; urethral localizations of urothelial tumors and condylomata acuminata; urethral stenosis, as a complement of optical urethrotomy; hemorrhagic cystitis after radiotherapy and some forms of chemotherapy. The pulsed dye laser may become an important advance in endoscopic treatment of ureteral calculi.

Treatment of Condyloma Acuminata with Tirbanibulin 1% Ointment in People Living with HIV: A Case Series with Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Condyloma acuminata (CA) are dysplastic lesions caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Condylomata acuminata are common in Human Immunodeficiency Virus- (HIV) infected individuals and have been linked to HIV transmission. Current therapeutic options for CA encompass laser, cryotherapy, imiquimod, sinecatechins, podophyllotoxin, and trichloroacetate. These topical therapies have limitations caused by significant local skin reactions, high recurrence rates, prolonged application times, and, in some cases, a supposed lower efficacy in people living with Human Immunodeficiency…

No clinical predictors of intraepithelial neoplasia in HIV-positive patients with external condilomata acuminata.

To identify clinical parameters in association with human papilloma virus (HPV) genotypes and histopathology diagnosis in HIV-positive patients with external condylomata acuminata (ECA), 400 Chilean HIV-positive patients were included in the study. Forty-seven patients presented ECA. Clinical parameters and socio demographic data were recorded. Histopathology study and HPV linear array genotyping assay were performed. Intraepithelial neoplasia (IEN) grade 2 or 3 was found in 8.5% of patients, associated to HPV-16. Patients were mainly single, MSM, with history of sexually transmitted disease (…

Lasers in urology.

Ever since Mulvany first described use of Ruby laser for lithotripsy, urologists have been exploiting every possible application of this technology. Laser lithotripsy in the 1980s and now laser prostatectomy in the 1990s have dominated laser usage in urology. Applications of lasers for superficial lesions (e.g., condylomata acuminata and carcinoma of penis) have found an established role. Interests in laser welding, photodynamic therapy and fluorescence continues to grow and evolve. The laser industry at the same time is striving to provide more efficient lasers. High power lasers (Holmium:YAG…

[Comparative studies between 0.5 percent podophyllotoxin preparations (Condyline) and 20 percent podophyllin dissolved in alcohol, in the therapy of raised condylomas].

We report on a comparative clinical study on 0.5% condyline solution and cream versus 20% podophyllin solution given to 75 patients suffering from condylomata acuminata. Podophyllin was applied once a week during a 6 weeks hospital care; therapy with condyline was carried out by the patients at home twice a day during 4 consecutive days. After therapy, full remission was obtained in 17 out of the 25 patients (68%) treated with condyline solution, in 17 out of the 26 patients (65%) treated with condyline cream, and in 8 out of the 24 patients (38%) treated with podophyllin. 8 biopsies taken fro…

Therapeutic protocol of vulvar and cervical HPV-infection.

BACKGROUND: The stages of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection are under the control of the immune system, which is inhibited by the virus itself. Thus, at present the treatment of condyloma acuminata is based on the use of interferon (IFN). The aim of the present study was to evaluate immune system activation and clinical response to IFN therapy. In addition, in the most serious cases, medical treatment with IFN was associated with diathermocoagulation (DTC) of persistent warts. The effectiveness of the combined therapy was also assessed. METHODS: 7 women (age range: 16-52) suffering from c

Local Hyperthermia for Warts Treatment.

Warts, benign epidermal proliferations, are a direct result of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, specifically targeting the keratinocytes within the stratum corneum of the skin. The development of warts is the most common clinical manifestation of HPV, with plantar warts, condylomata acuminata, and common warts being the most frequently observed types. These growths can be unsightly and sometimes painful, affecting the quality of life for those afflicted. Although various treatments are available, ranging from topical medications to surgical procedures, the quest for a treatment that is bo…

Different human papillomavirus genotypes in ano-genital lesions.

In order to verify the frequency and physical state of some viral strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in anogenital lesions, two-hundred and four specimens were studied. HPV/DNA was detected by using non isotopic in situ hybridization method, HPV-DNA was found in 25 lesions. The integrated pattern of HPV types 16/18 was found only in invasive carcinomas, the episomic one in all high risk lesions, never in invasive carcinomas. The low oncogenic risk genotypes 6/11 were detected only in condylomata acuminata, the high oncogenic risk genotypes 16/18 were found not only in cervical intraepitheli…

Therapeutic approaches to papillomavirus infections.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause benign tumors (i.e., warts) and are occasionally responsible for malignant tumors such as squamous-cell carcinomas. Therapy for most warts is commonly via surgical or cytodestructive methods. Presently, only one antiviral/immunomodulatory drug is available for wart therapy; this agent, interferon alpha (IFN alpha), is approved only for genital warts (condylomata acuminata) and is expensive, relatively difficult to use, associated with systemic side effects, and somewhat slow acting. Two new antiviral/immunomodulatory drugs, imiquimod and cidofovir, have been…

[Mucocutaneous candidiasis in patients with skin diseases].

We investigated skin diseases associated with mucocutaneous Candida infection by analyzing the clinical records of 44695 in-patients of the department of dermatology of Kiel. For more than eighty skin diseases the relative risk (RR) was calculated by age-and sex-adjusting methods. 1996 patients demonstrated a mucocutaneous candidosis, 14.8% of them being hospitalized because of extensive Candida infection. In patients with dermatomyositis, bullous pemphigus, tinea inguinalis, and condylomata acuminata a Candida infection was observed more than threefold than expected. Furthermore, patients wit…

Induction of proliferating cell nuclear antigen in differentiated keratinocytes of human papillomavirus-infected lesions.

The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was studied in human papillomavirus (HPV)-infected, benign and malignant lesions of the genital tract and larynx using immunocytochemical staining of formalin-fixed clinical specimens. We observed the induction of PCNA in squamous carcinomas and adenocarcinomas, as has been demonstrated with other malignancies. In addition, the differentiated keratinocytes of the upper spinous cells and granulocytes in condylomata acuminata and low-grade intraepithelial neoplasias showed a consistent induction of PCNA compared with the normal squamous…
