The who, where, and when of IgE in allergic airway disease.

Allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis/conjunctivitis are characterized by a T(H)2-dominated immune response associated with increased serum IgE levels in response to inhaled allergens. Because IgE is a key player in the induction and maintenance of allergic inflammation, it represents a prime target for therapeutic intervention. However, our understanding of IgE biology remains fragmentary. This article puts together our current knowledge on IgE in allergic airway diseases with a special focus on the identity of IgE-secreting cells ("who"), their location ("where"), and the circumstances in wh

Ocular allergy test and biomarkers on the ocular surface: Clinical test for evaluating the ocular surface condition in allergic conjunctival diseases.

Allergic conjunctival diseases (ACDs) are inflammatory diseases of the conjunctiva and cornea caused predominantly by the IgE-mediated immediate hypersensitivity response. Allergic conjunctival diseases include allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC), and giant papillary conjunctivitis. In clinical practice of ACDs, an ocular allergy test using biomarker measurement is a crucial examination technique for diagnosing, evaluating severity, and determining the efficacy of medical treatment. The ocular allergy test includes the tear test for eva

Age-specific associations of early daycare, older siblings, severe airway infection, and preterm birth with subsequent atopic diseases.

BACKGROUND: The effects of infection and developmental adaptations in infancy on the prevalence of subsequent atopy-related diseases at different ages during childhood are not fully determined. This study aims to examine the similarities and differences in the age-specific association of asthma, allergic rhinitis/conjunctivitis, and atopic dermatitis with early-life infection-related factors (i.e., daycare, older siblings, and severe airway infection) and developmental adaptations (i.e., preterm birth and rapid weight gain) in children. METHODS: In this longitudinal cohort study (n = 47,015),

Comparative study of aeropollen and pollinosis cases.

Research linking pollen grains in the air with allergy cases (pollinosis) is still incipient in Africa. To close this gap, aerosamplers were placed in Gbagada, Lagos State and harvested monthly from January 2013 to December 2014. Data obtained was correlated with allergy cases (wheezing cough, rhinitis, and allergic conjunctivitis) from Gbagada General Hospital Lagos. Dominant pollen grains recovered were those of Alchornea cordifolia, Amaranthaceae, Casuarina equisetifolia, Cyperaceae, and Poaceae. Pollinosis data revealed that wheezing cough had the highest records in 2013 (1153) and 2014 (1

An Unusual Localized Reaction of Conjunctivitis with Systemic Use of Ketoprofen: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Although the eye is rarely the sole target of an immediate allergic-type response, ocular signs and symptoms often represent the most prominent features of systemic allergic reactions. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), due to their cyclooxygenase inhibitory activity, can trigger nonallergic hypersensitivity responses. Ketoprofen, in particular, is one of the most potent cyclooxygenase inhibitors at therapeutic plasma concentrations and is recognized as a frequent photoallergic agent. However, localized hypersensitivity reactions following systemic administration are

Anaphylaxis to rabbit: a case report.

BACKGROUND: While rabbits are common as pets, severe allergic reactions to domestic rabbits in homes are unusual. Typically, allergic manifestations are mild to moderate allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pruritus and/or asthma in laboratory animal caretakers with frequent exposure. METHODS: We report an atopic child with a severe allergic reaction following inhalant exposure to a rabbit. We performed percutaneous skin tests and determined serum-specific IgE to commercial preparation of rabbit epithelium and extracts of rabbit fur and serum. RESULTS: Percutaneous skin test was positive to ra

[Role of allergen immunotherapy in the prevention of allergic asthma].

The prevalence of allergic asthma is still increasing, which affects the quality of life of patients, threatens their lives, and brings enormous social and economic burden. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only treatment that can alter the progression of the "Atopic March". It has been widely used in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis, and its role and effect in the treatment of allergic asthma have been gradually recognized. A few studies have shown that AIT may have a preventive effect on the development and progression of allergic asthma. In this article, the definitio

Atopic diseases and systemic lupus erythematosus: an epidemiological study of the risks and correlations.

Both atopic diseases and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are immune disorders that may lead to physical complications or multi-system comorbidities. This population-based case-control study was designed to evaluate the risk of SLE associated with atopic diseases. Using a national insurance claims dataset in Taiwan, we identified 1673 patients newly diagnosed with SLE and 6692 randomly selected controls frequency matched for gender, age and index date. The odds ratios (OR) for SLE were calculated for associations with allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis and asthma.

Differentiating conjunctivitis of diverse origins.

While symptoms can be very distressing, patients with conjunctivitis general maintain good vision and recover completely without permanent sequelae. The great majority of cases of conjunctivitis are infectious or allergic in origin. Seen with increasing frequency are external eye diseases related to contact lens wear or prolonged use of ophthalmic medications. The various forms of conjunctivitis are often not associated with pathognomonic features. A thorough history and ophthalmic examination often permit a presumptive diagnosis and initiation of empiric therapy. For example, a chronic bilate

Longitudinal association between early atopic dermatitis and subsequent attention-deficit or autistic disorder: A population-based case-control study.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the common allergic diseases in children. The presence of allergic diseases was found to have association with the risk of developing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, but it is still inconclusive. This study was to investigate the longitudinal relationship between AD developed during toddlerhood and subsequent development of ADHD or ASD in later childhood. Toddlers born between 1998 and 2008 and diagnosed with AD at the age younger than 3 years and older than 1 month were retrieved from Taiwan's Na
