Combined oral contraceptive pills (COCs) remain one of the most popular forms of contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancy in women. While it is known that COCs can cause sexual dysfunction in women, there is currently no recommendation to screen for sexual function before and after initiation of COCs. We propose that, based on the evidence available, assessment of sexual function should be done at initiation of COCs, as well as at regular intervals thereafter. This would allow COC-related sexual dysfunction to be managed early, such as by switching the patient to newer-generation COCs or ot

BACKGROUND: The impact of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) on female sexual function remains a controversial and often overlooked issue. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three common LARC methods on female sexual function.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 90 women, divided into three groups based on their chosen contraceptive: copper-containing intrauterine device (Cu-IUD, n = 30), levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS, n = 30), and the etonogestrel subcutaneous implant (Implanon, n = 30). Changes in sexual frequency and partner sexual satisfaction

Antiepileptic drugs that induce hepatic enzyme activity may alter the metabolism of most hormonal methods of contraception, and this affects the contraceptive regime. This effect should be considered in the choice of both the treatment of the epilepsy and the choice of contraceptive method. This review considers these interactions and offers advice about their management.

Interview data from 3,214 married women having planned pregnancies and singleton deliveries who had no history of fertility treatment and who conceived more than two weeks after cessation of contraception were analyzed. The interval from cessation of contraception to conception was 13 months or greater for 24.8% of prior "pill" users vs 10.6% for former users of all other methods. As compared with former users of other methods, pill users had a notably lower monthly percentage of conceptions for the first three months and somewhat lower percentage from four to ten months. Results were not alte

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are widely utilized, long-acting reversible contraceptives with established guidelines for timely removal. Prolonged IUD retention into the postmenopausal period is an uncommon phenomenon but may have various effects on the endometrium. We present the case of a 64-year-old female who presented with postmenopausal bleeding (PMB) and was incidentally found to have a copper T380A IUD retained in utero for 29 years. The IUD was removed without complications, and her bleeding resolved following removal. However, endometrial biopsy revealed hyperplasia without atypia. Alt

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device (IUD) is one of the most effective contraceptive methods available today. However, IUDs can cause some serious complications, such as bleeding, uterine perforation, and bowel perforation. Migration into bowel is a rare but serious complication that requires surgical attention.
CASE: A 35-year-old multiparous female was diagnosed with IUD migration into the abdominal cavity. Upon diagnostic laparoscopy by gynecologic surgeons, sigmoid colon penetration by the IUD was strongly suspected. After confirmation of the penetration by abdominal computed tomography s

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare disorder. The diagnosis is frequently missed preoperatively. We describe a patient who had had an intrauterine contraceptive device in situ for 5 years. She presented with a painful pelvicoabdominal mass, located between the uterus and rectum, and a colitis-like disease of the distal colon. Culture of the removed IUD demonstrated Actinomyces. She was intensively treated with intravenously penicillin for six weeks. Following this conservative treatment the abdominal tumor and the colitis-like symptoms totally disappeared. During two years follow-up she is free

Six centers participated in comparative studies of female sterilization conducted by the international Fertility Research Program. The incidence of technical failures (or failed attempts) was compared between patients sterilized with the tubal ring and those sterilized with other tubal occlusion techniques. The tubal ring was associated with a higher failure rate than electrocoagulation, the Rocket clip, or the modified Pomeroy technique. Of 1,035 tubal ring sterilizations, there were 38 technical failures. Reasons given by the operators for the failures, by frequency of occurrence, were surgi

BACKGROUND: The delivery of combination contraceptive steroids from a transdermal contraceptive patch or a contraceptive vaginal ring offers potential advantages over the traditional oral route. The transdermal patch and vaginal ring could require a lower dose due to increased bioavailability and improved user compliance.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the contraceptive effectiveness, cycle control, compliance (adherence), and safety of the contraceptive patch or the vaginal ring versus combination oral contraceptives (COCs).
SEARCH METHODS: Through February 2013, we searched MEDLINE, POPLINE, CENTR

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this analysis was to estimate the 3-year continuation rates of long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods and to compare these rates to non-LARC methods.
STUDY DESIGN: The Contraceptive CHOICE Project (CHOICE) was a prospective cohort study that followed 9256 participants with telephone surveys at 3 and 6 months, then every 6 months for 2-3 years. We estimated 3-year continuation rates of baseline methods that were chosen at enrollment. The LARC methods include the 52-mg levonorgestrel intrauterine device; the copper intrauterine device, and the subdermal

OBJECTIVE: We compared the 48 and 60 month continuation rates of levonorgestrel (LNG) and copper (Cu) intrauterine devices (IUDs) among women enrolled in the Contraceptive CHOICE Project (CHOICE). Our primary outcome was continuation at 48 months.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective cohort study of women who received an IUD through CHOICE. We randomly selected women who had either LNG or Cu IUDs inserted between January 2008 and June 2009 and contacted them by telephone. Once contacted and consented, they were asked whether they were still using their IUD. Women who reported discontinuation o
