Four cases of complete (three) and partial (one) agenesis were evaluated ultrasonographically. The frontal lobe/biparietal diameter ratio were evaluated in 113 normal fetuses and compared with those ratios in fetuses with corpus callosum agenesis. In the presence of the classic ultrasonographic features of agenesis of the corpus callosum, frontal lobe shortening, along with absence of the cavum septi pellucidi, might contribute to the diagnosis of complete agenesis of the corpus callosum and distinguish it from partial agenesis.

This paper presents four posterior, interhemispheric cerebral cysts found at perinatal autopsy. All cysts appeared to attenuate the overlying posterior corpus callosum. All had a base over the roof of the third ventricle and midbrain with a lining that resembled tela choroidea with the choroid plexus tufts projecting into the lumen of the cyst. Three cases had enlargement of the lateral ventricles. One case had complete communication between the cyst and the posterior lateral ventricles reminiscent of a holoprosencephaly confined to the posterior telencephalon. One case demonstrated a complete…

Corpus callosum (CC) atrophy by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a common finding in multiple sclerosis (MS). In order to examine the relationship between CC atrophy and cortical brain metabolism, we compared the cerebral metabolic rates for glucose (CMRglc), measured by positron emission tomography (PET), of 8 MS patients with evidence of CC atrophy on midsagittal MRI, 8 MS patients without CC atrophy and 10 healthy controls. Results showed no significant differences in supratentorial CMRglc absolute values between the three groups, although a slight metabolic reduction was observed in bot…

In this report we present the Nancy experience on the prenatal echographic diagnosis of corpus callosum agenesis in a consecutive series of 17 patients. The pitfalls and difficulties in the prenatal echographic diagnosis of ACC is emphasized. They are related with the particular development of the corpus callosum and the limitations of diagnostic procedures. Moreover, the variability of corpus callosum anomalies is illustrated, and the difficulties in establishing long term prognosis in the individual patient documented.

The corpus callosum, the largest commissural structure in the human brain, is a central focus in research on aging and neurological diseases. It is also a critical target for interventions such as deep brain stimulation and serves as an important biomarker in clinical trials, including those investigating remyelination therapies. Despite extensive research on corpus callosum segmentation, few publicly available tools provide a comprehensive and automated analysis pipeline. To address this gap, we present FastSurfer-CC, an efficient and fully automated framework for corpus callosum morphometry.…

We aim to identify the associated abnormalities, underlying etiology, and risk factors that may lead to motor/cognitive impairment in children with corpus callosum (CC) malformations. This will provide clinicians with data to predict the prognosis of children with CC malformations in the prenatal and/or neonatal period.Children with agenesis or hypoplasia of any part of the CC on neuroimaging within 11 years at a tertiary care university hospital were retrospectively evaluated for demographic and clinical characteristics, other associated systemic abnormalities, etiologies, and prognosis. Chil…

Anorexia nervosa is an often-severe psychiatric illness characterized by significantly low body weight, fear of gaining weight, and distorted body image. Multiple neuroimaging studies have shown abnormalities in cortical morphology, mostly associated with the starvation state. Investigations of white matter, while more limited in number, have suggested global and regional volume reductions, as well as abnormal diffusivity in multiple regions including the corpus callosum. Yet, no study has specifically examined thickness of the corpus callosum, a large white matter tract instrumental in the in…

OBJECTIVE: To assess the genetic etiologies underlying agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and its pregnancy outcomes in the era of next-generation sequencing.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on prospectively collected prenatal ACC cases in which amniocentesis was performed between January 2016 and December 2022. ACC was divided into non-isolated and isolated according to the presence or absence of ultrasound abnormalities. Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), karyotyping and exome sequencing (ES) were performed after genetic counseling. Pregnancy outcomes were assessed by…

Alien hand syndrome (AHS) is a rare apraxia syndrome, characterized by involuntary and uncontrollable movements of one upper limb, often accompanied by intermanual conflict. Damage to the corpus callosum, acute infarction and neurodegenerative disease may result in AHS. Based on the presentation and impairment region, AHS has three variants: frontal, callosal and posterior. Each type may have a different clinical presentation. A total of 157 patients admitted to hospital with corpus callosum infarction between 2012 and 2022 were included for this study, of whom a number of 5 presented with AHS…

PURPOSE: To investigate height of the corpus callosum (CC) in order to describe the corpus callosum anomalies in fetuses with meningomyelocele (MMC) and compare these findings with the corpus callosum of healthy fetuses.
METHODS: In this study, fetal MRI examinations were performed on 44 fetal MMC malformation cases. As the control group, 34 fetal MRI examinations, which were anatomically normal, were evaluated retrospectively. In the study group, lateral ventricle diameter, the level and diameter of the MMC defect, and CC height were measured. In the control group, CC height and lateral vent…

Anomalies of the corpus callosum, including complete agenesis, partial agenesis, and hypoplasia, are some of the most common brain malformations. Corpus callosum abnormalities are potentially syndromic, many of which have identifiable genetic etiologies. Patients affected with either syndromic or non-syndromic corpus callosum anomalies may also have associated ophthalmologic abnormalities. Some of the syndromes with corpus callosum malformations that also involve ophthalmologic findings include Aicardi syndrome, Mowat-Wilson syndrome, and Xia-Gibbs syndrome. This case report describes a patien…

OBJECTIVE: Patients with classic trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) have abnormalities in white matter integrity of the corpus callosum (CC). However, in CTN patients, it is unclear whether the CC substructure region is affected to varying degrees.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 22 patients with CTN and 22 healthy controls (HC) with matching age, gender, and education were selected. All subjects underwent 3.0 T magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging and high resolution T1-weighted imaging. The CC was reconstructed by DTI technology, which was divided into three substructure regions: genu, body…

Neuroglial (glioependymal) cyst is a rare congenital tumor of the central nervous system usually found in childhood. It can be isolated or associated with other brain malformations. Magnetic resonance imaging is the technique of choice for making the diagnosis. We report the case of a 10-year-old child who presented with epileptic seizures revealing a neuroglial cyst and dysgenesis of the corpus callosum.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ischemic infarction of the corpus callosum is rare and infarction isolated to the corpus callosum alone rarer still, accounting for much <1% of ischemic stroke in most stroke registries. About half of callosal infarctions affect the splenium.
METHODS: During a 2-week period, at the height of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in New York City, 4 patients at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx were found to have ischemic lesions of the splenium of the corpus callosum, 2 with infarction isolated to the corpus callosum.
RESULTS: All patients tested posit…

An adult female complained of enlargement of right eyes in other people. Diffusion-weighted imaging detected an abnormal high-intensity area in the region from the splenium of the corpus callosum to the major forceps on the right side. The patient reported that right eyes appeared larger in size, which suggested prosopometamorphopsia. Adichotic listening test identified left-ear deficit. Acombination of prosopometamorphopsia and left-ear deficit was not identified in the reported patients. Prosopometamorphopsia in most of the reported patients included the eye as did that in our patient. This …
